🌳 Coast Wirilda 🔎(Acacia uncifolia). ⏳Conservation Status: Endangered. 🗺Endemicity: Eastern and south-western Australia. — The Coast Wirilda is “facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild” due to its limited distribution. Limited to the calcareous sand and sandy loam soils of the southern coast of Victoria. 🌳 In the middle of the warmest seasons the Coast Wirilda produces flowers, seed, sap and new vegetative growth. At this time of the year different wattlebird species are guarding these trees with their lives—the flowers are one of the most fragrant of the wattle species and when dried they taste and smell like honey mixed with wattleseed. Nutty and sweet. 🌳 Like all acacias they fix nitrogen in the soil. Their bark contains saponin so it can be used to temporarily poison water to catch fish. Their sap is a neutral, non-poisonous gum. It’s a host plant for the local mistletoe species which are hosts for dozens of butterfly species. This is why planting native trees is so important. From seed these plants are two years old. They’ve been in the ground here for 6 months and already the soil health is improving and the preference of undergrowth grasses for the native animals, like the female eastern grey kangaroos here, is evident. These local trees—blackwood, she oak, saltbush, eucalyptus and banksia species are already providing shade, food and companionship for large mainland mammals/marsupials. Plant native trees and somehow native soil biology reappears, and so do native grasses and other ground-cover plants that have attempted to reappear for the past 200 years but have been suppressed by poor land management. 🌳 Long-term, low-input, low-cost, low-biodiversity shelter belts are not my preferred methods of reforestation but it does the job, so to speak. 🌳 25 trees in a 100-metre long corridor is sparse. But long-term, and with 100% survival rate, within five years, will get you a two meter wide tree. 🌳 Enough to fill some gaps, shade a cow and provide some habitat. 🌳 The interesting thing is that if you multiply that by 4x. Those processes happen 4x times faster. 🌳 So 100 plants in a 100 metre corridor will get you that sort of vegetative growth within one year. We have about 4000 trees going in the ground tomorrow! By far the most important part of the re-vegetation project is to repair eroded soil/sand across the various bull rubs (blows). Fundamentally, on grazed land, erosion occurs when the soil is left uncovered. This is made worse by over-grazing, a practise that has now stopped on the @barragunda property. — On the Southern Peninsula here in Cape Schanck there are indigenous plants that can help repair and bind to the calcareous sand. Just under 10% complete, we have planned 2,283 plants, trees and shrubs to go into the ground before the end of the year.
