"Miss 'Toria!" A tiny orphan approached the queen and tugged on the sleeve of her shirt. "Will you read me a bedtime story? Please?"
She’d been spending a lot of time working on improving the orphanage – ‘TOO much time’, according to some of the members of her court (though they never DARED to say such things to the queen herself.) But she didn’t care. The children were far more important to her than the boring meetings she was forced to sit through, or the events she was supposed to attend – or any of her other ‘queenly duties’. The children of her orphanage took precedence over anything and everything else. After all, the orphanage was the one thing she had done since becoming queen that she was truly proud of.
So when she felt a light tug at the sleeve of her blouse, her azure hues softened, crinkling at the corners as a small smile pulled the corners of her lips upward.
“A story, hmm?”
How many times had she asked Frieda to tell her stories back when she was around the same age as this child? A pang of nostalgia struck the young ruler – those happier days, hiding behind a hay bale cuddled up to a mysterious woman (who she later discovered was her half-sister) with a book in her lap. This tiny girl before her reminded her of the child she had been, and because of that – even though it was such a LATE hour for the child to be awake – she just couldn’t turn her down.
“Alright, but it will have to be a short one tonight. You’re up way past your bedtime, you know!”
She scolded the child, but there was a playful undertone to her voice. With a light laugh, she lifted the child, and carried her back to one of the bedrooms, making sure to be as quiet as possible so as not to wake the other sleeping children. When at last she found a vacant bed, she laid the child down, tucking her in before gently setting down at the edge of the cot . In a soft whisper, she began her story.
“Once upon a time…”

For a moment, the raven doesn’t know how to react to this. As tired as she is, still managing to stay awake for long periods of time, her responses are still delayed in the slightest.
“Alright then. What do you want to talk about?’
“Hmm... I don’t really know - anything really! I just thought you looked bored out here by yourself.”
Truth be told, the tiny blonde was worried about her dear friend. Of course, Mikasa was one of the strongest people she knew, but Historia could tell that the scarfed girl was tired -- she must have been pushing herself too hard again, or something of the sort.
“So, um... how are things going? How are you?”

[♟] The teen was indefinately stressed– more so horrified. How the people expect the Corps to be brave and fearless against th- ose creatures was beyong him. He wasn’t a safe soldier either, he constantly spaced out and lost all his focus– life-threatening.
[♟] The raven’s silver hues trained onto the horse for a moment. His lips slipped into a friendly smile, the girl was with the horse- s rather than introducing herself to her squad; whilst the teen w- as simply procrastinating, taking out a casual walk. His face he- ld a kind look as he raised a hand to pet the horse; strong yet so nimble as to be gentle as he carressed the creature’s mane. It was truthfully more relaxing than he’d expect– the reason he c- ame to accept as to why Krista was now out here. Her identity known now as he expected– the squad placements. Krista Lenz.

[♟] The male’s lips held his kind look as he extended a hand with cheerful grace– though this cheer was a mask for the anxiety an- d depression that consumed him with thoughts of the upcoming e- xpedition.The smaller blonde really hadn’t been in his way, so of course he felt the need to assure her; “You weren’t in my way, I simply wasn’t paying attention. No need to take the blame.”
A gentle smile pulled at the corner of the small girl’s lips as she watched the raven gently petting the horse’s mane, a smile appearing on his lips as well. She, too, turned her attention back to the creature for a moment, softly caressing it’s nose.
She’d always felt more comfortable around the large animals than she had around humans, so it was no surprise to her that she found herself with her horse rather than her assigned squad. Ever since she was a child growing up on her grandparent’s farm, she’d felt a special connection to the equestrian creatures, one that she simply couldn’t form with other humans. And yet...
Hearing the voice of her comrade beside her snapped the blonde from her thoughts, bringing her back to the reality she’d been trying to avoid. Nicolas... she recognized the name from the paper she’d been given with her squad assignments on it. Turning her attention away from her horse and back to her teammate, she glanced up at him once again. With a small, soft smile of her own, she took his hand in her own, giving it a gentle shake.
“I thought so! It’s nice to meet you too, Nick.”
He seemed like a genuinely kind person -- the type she wanted Krista to be. But there was something else about him, something that suggested some sort of hidden sadness, much like herself -- though she assumed it was because of the expedition they were about to embark on.
“I don’t blame you. Th-there’s probably a lot on your mind, with the journey we’re about to go on and everything... Do you think you’re ready? I d-don’t know if I am...”
