“Yeah—” wait, something wasn't right. Clark could feel it in his bones. There was a disturbance in the Force. For a moment his brain went blank, and then the realization hit him like a brick. He should've known. Your mind was brilliant. It was only a matter of time before you figured out his identity. He hadn't prepared for this. What was he supposed to do, act stupid?
You gasped, eyes widening in surprise at his crude language. It wasn't every day that Clark swore. “When did you figure it out?”
“There's only one person in this world who would unironically say 'good gosh’ after being slammed into a building.”
Oh, yeah. He'd forgotten about that video. He still needed to get Mr. Terrific to erase that from the internet for the sake of his identity, of course.
“You weren't supposed to find out like this.” Clark, no, Superman almost wanted to whine, but he settled for a frustrated groan that left you grinning like an idiot. He was hunched over in the middle of your living room, panicking like a high school boy who’d just been outed by his crush; he was mortified.
“Oh? And how was I supposed to find out?” You raised an eyebrow.
“I don't know! Just anything but this!”
He took a deep breath, balling his hands up and pressing them to his eyes as he tried to make sense of what had happened. It wasn't as if he didn't trust you; it was the opposite. He cared for you in ways so deep that it scared him. The thought of you getting hurt because of him drove him mad during sleepless nights; he couldn't lose you.
He ran his hands down his face, both arms eventually falling back to his sides. He needed to calm down. Everything was fine. You were safe in your apartment with him.
“Clark?” Your voice interrupted his silent panic, effectively snapping him out of his reverie. He blinked. When did you get in front of him?
He tried to put on a brave face; he really did. He told himself it was for you, but really it was for him. It backfired immediately, and he was left staring down at you with an expression that could only be a mix of panic and total adoration. You were staring up at him with those eyes, so bright and hopeful he could've sworn there was a whole galaxy hiding behind them.
“Yeah,” he sighed. “I’m okay.”
At last, his shoulders finally slumped, and the tension melted away. He offered you a soft smile.
“I think I’ll always be okay when I'm with you.”
