Something about Amat remembering the NHL posters above Kevin’s bed because they’re the same ones on his walls. How he clocked the problem with Beartown’s hockey culture when he walked into the parking lot after the win. “How can anyone possibly experience this without thinking he’s a god?” Because the town fosters a culture of turning boys into gods based on the results of a game. Then the boys believe they are above accountability and consequence. And they’re right. Amat sees himself as an outsider finally allowed in — he gets caught up in the adrenaline of celebrating, of being part of something — yet he has the same posters on his wall. He wants to succeed on the ice so badly for his mom, but who will he become off the ice in the process? What is the difference between him and Kevin? A few hours ago, wouldn’t he have given anything to be Kevin? And that haunts Amat to the point he can’t even look at the ice in fear of seeing his reflection … but he stays silent in return for being accepted … it’s so easy to keep quiet in Beartown
