spindle whorls of incised bone, iranian, early islamic period c. 700s-900s a.d.
Genuine question for fiber folks: why did we move away from this style of spindle? There're pros and cons to every spindle design, im sure, but the flexibility of the interchangle whorl design seems pretty awesome (and very pretty!). Why are most modern spindles I've encountered fixed whorl? is it just a location problem, and this style is popular outside of the US?
I have a thought, but no evidence to back it up and no time right now to do the research that might back it up. So this is based on stuff I've been chewing on for a while now.
It's this:
I think most of Europe and European-descended North America effectively "lost" spindle spinning during the industrial revolution.
When it was repopularized in the 1960's-80's what came back was spinning for thick, heavy yarns and art yarns for knitting. A company or two probably said "This Is A Spindle", and since home based weavers were almost never spinning for themselves at the same time as weaving fine fabric (no blame, it's a lot of work when commercial fine warp and weft are relatively available), people accepted Spindle Is Big Chunky Thing That Makes Big Chunky Yarn.
I say this in part because I spin on a 14thC reproduction whorl in demonstrations. My character would be handing those spindles of single ply thread off to a weaver. I can fill one or two spindles in a day, working that way, and my character is based on someone who was not wealthy so unlikely to own several dozen whorls. It is extremely easy to slip the whorl off, drop the spindle-turned-bobbin into a basket, and jam a new shaft onto the whorl.
Long story short: I think we forgot.
Nightmares can be scary and confusing, but it’s important to remember that, at the end of the day, they’re just dreams.
I'm a big fan of seer Obi-Wan au's where Obi-Wan and Quinlan are awkward foils for Yan Dooku and Sifo-Dyas. LIke their inversions. Dooku is who is all buttoned up and proper and cares for his friend but his too emotionally distant to help him vs Quinlan who is just chaos incarnate and so emotionally invest in Obi-Wan but has to remain physically distant, and Sifo-Dyas who tries so hard to be proactive and prevent his visions that he causes them vs Obi-Wan who is desperate to ignore them and pretend they are just dreams that his inaction equally causes them.
You get me so well and I love this analysis is so so so much. I always love parallels between Sifo-Dyas and Obi in my AUs. They’re both so afraid of what they see but react so differently to that fear. It’s always interesting to compare them. They’re like the fight or flight instinct, with Sifo choosing to fight the future and Obi fleeing from his visions of it. And neither option works in preventing the tragedy.
Y’all I’m so happy with how my yarn turned out it looks like stained glass imo

Have a stellar day ✨️
Shelved the spinning books again at last and I am now officially Out Of Space for the category "fibre and textiles instructional", even with evicting the two smallest books. The bookends hang a couple millimetres over the edge.
Unfortunately I am not out of books I want...
You put that quote back in context or so help me.

People in The Lord of the Rings who talk about hobbits are either like "what the fuck even is that thing get it away from me" or like "oh my god i love these nasty freaks i want to study them in a laboratory" meanwhile every hobbit other than Bilbo, the Tooks, and some of the Brandybucks live like they're trying to win a Most Normal contest like the townsfolk in Hot Fuzz
'Average hobbit goes on 3 adventures per year' is actually just statistical error. Average hobbit goes on 0 adventures per year. Adventures Bilbo, who lives in a hole in the ground and goes on 10000 adventures per year, is an outlier and should not have been counted
Samples from the 8lbs of raw wool I received in the mail this week! Eeeeek so excited. Romney crossbreed fleeces from Lopez Island, WA.
thought of a solution to a problem nobody else has: Little Women shouldn't be adapted as a movie.
It should be a TV series.
hey quick PSA but “reading before bed to wind down” only works if you’re normal about books btw. if you aren’t you are going to end up awake at 2:52am after finishing the whole book just trust me on this one
