So you'll see it said almost no plants dye green, and that you have to dye blue with indigo and over dye with yellow for natural green. At least usually; you can get dull army greens with an iron after bath.

However. Black eyed Susans.

Just the flowers. Alum mordant. Keep the heat very low. 100% WOF. And you get this.

So! This is a really common question!

It's a strange fact; green is the most common color in plants. HOWEVER, almost none of those beautiful green plants DYE green once you make a dye bath and get fiber in it. Next time you get a grass stain on some pants, watch the stain. It will start green, but after a wash or two it will fade out to a sort of muddy yellowish beige.

That beautiful grass green becomes that same sort of muddy yellowish beige if you use it in a dye bath. Most green plants can dye yellowish beige. A fair number of plants dye very pretty yellow in various shades, and most of those can be modified to sage or olive greens with iron or copper as an afterbath or mordant, but no plant alone can dye a true grass green.

HOWEVER, there are a very few that dye green alone, like black eyed susan flowers, pictured. It isn't a bright grass or emerald and is more a soft sage green, but it IS green.

The only way to make a bright emerald or grass green is to dye with indigo and then overdye with one of the plants that makes yellow. It's the great contradiction of natural dye that when surrounded by green plants, it's so hard to get that same bright plant green.

How does a yellow over woad turn out? I've not been able to anything with plant dye myself, but woad looks like a more green leaning blue than a purple leaning one and seems like it would lend itself well to making green

Woad contains the exact same dye molecule as indigo, but in lesser concentrations. You need more of it to make a deep blue, but it'll make a deep true blue same as indigo. if you use less of it, it dyes a slightly softer blue. It lends itself beautifully to greens when overdyed with yellows.

And also, would you say it's an expensive hobby to get into? I already sew and do cross stitch, so I've got some experience with fibre crafts.

I’d say pick-up bandweaving (also known as Norwegian pick-up, or Baltic pick-up) is a very approachable style of weaving. It’s basically a plain weave, except you pick up or push down certain warp threads each pass to keep them from being incorporated into the weave. This is what creates the floats that make up the design!

The hardest part, at least for me, is having the patience to count threads to make sure you’re picking up and dropping the right ones. It can be a slow process, but the technique itself is easy to learn! I highly recommend starting with a simple pattern on a narrow band so it's easier to keep track of your threads. If it's your first time weaving I'd also recommend working a few inches, or even a whole band, in just a plain weave without any pick-ups. That way you can get a feel for weaving and work on getting a consistent tension without the added difficulty of following a pattern.

While not the cheapest hobby out there, weaving can be affordable depending on which supplies you choose to use and how much yarn you already own. Though I have to say it has set me on the slippery slope of wanting to buy a loom (pricy) and lots and lots of yarn (always a risk with fiber hobbies). Here are the tools I use and about what I paid for them:

Heddles can get pretty expensive but there are cheaper alternatives out there. Aside from making your own rigid heddle out of wood (I've seen a lot of people laser cut them), you can create a heddle out of string! I haven’t tried this myself, but you can look into backstrap weaving if you’re curious how it’s done. Smaller heddles will also be less expensive.

Please imagine Evil Grandpa Dooku who keeps trying to get Obi-Wan to join him but ultimately fails each time getting so frustrated that his backup plan is naming Obi-Wan his heir as Count of Serenno. There are many reasons for his mad scheme of varying plausibility, including:

A. He knows Obi-Wan will actually do what's best for the planet instead of leaving it to the idiot government in charge to deal with

B. He is making a dramatic Statement about not being able to escape the lineage you come from even in death

C. He is aware of the non-zero chance of being betrayed by Sidious, so he makes it that upon Dooku's death the New Count of Serenno and leader of the CIS is given all of his Very Important Documents Describing the Sith Lord Immediately

And most importantly:

D. No matter how distant or cruel he may be, Dooku is after all part of the disaster lineage and is not above fucking with his grand-padawan from beyond the grave solely because the idea amuses him.

Anyway long story short Obi-Wan has a Very Interesting Time after Anakin kills Dooku aboard the Invisible Hand, starting with being declared the new leader of the CIS. It snowballs from there.

there’s a specific kind of stupidity to the deception arc when you remember that obi-wan’s the commanding officer of the open circle fleet, which is apparently the majority of the republic’s navy and includes the task forces of most major jedi generals including yoda, like obi-wan’s not just the jedi general of the 212th, he’s everyone else’s commanding officer. in terms of the GAR he’s supposed to outrank most jedi generals we see on the show, including several other jedi masters on the council, it’s a position that’s a lot closer to darth vader’s supreme commander of the imperial military bullshit than it is, like, anakin just being the general of the 501st legion.

obi-wan, for all intents and purposes, is their war. he’s the dude organizing what’s clearly their most powerful forces, and they intentionally let him be the one to very publicly die, like that wouldn’t be a major opportunity for the separatists to take advantage of the confusion? my going theory about the clone wars is that almost no one knew what they were doing if they couldn’t email obi-wan about it, but obi-wan can’t answer 5,000 emails in a day, and that’s why every decision everyone made is garbage cans

Water retting makes flax a beautiful golden color, but field retting is easier to keep an eye on.

ALSO, I've come to the conclusion that Tolkein's Teleri elves did field retting for the sails of the swan ships, because field retting leaves the flax a beautiful silvery gray, and while all flax will eventually bleach to white with washing in lye and sun the sails are supposed to be pale and the silver would suit the aesthetic better than the golden color you get from water retting. i've given up on getting an accurate color in photos, the true color is a rich royal purple. the yarn has won, i'm tired but also proud of what i've made

there will be more silk in my future but i need a couple months to recharge first. i'm feeling a little feral, and i kind of want to shove this skein at people and yell look at my yarn i made!
