I just saw your stag art that you posted and I like it very much! Care to talk more about your process? I don't know much about the doing of art, esp. digital stuff besides like lineart, do you draw each of the lines individually in layers or lay down colors over each other or use a tool or like idk what other options there might be but please share with the class
Okay time to do a quick tutorial about how my process with this technique looks these days. As a quick doodle to do a demonstration with, I'll now draw a shitty little bunny. And then, using the same brush size, I'll define areas of light, dark, and other detail on the bunny. And a background. This bunny is on its way to a strip club. Shade and texture outlines on the background too. This is all in one layer. Copy that layer.
And then we get to the funny part: Opening the GIMP filters, choosing distorts, value propagate, and set it to "more black", which makes the outline of the copied layer 1 pixel larger in every direction.
Since the outline itself is 9 pixels wide, you repeat the same filter eight times more, so the upper layer's lineart is three times wider than the original. Then you copy that layer, and repeat the process, 9x "value propagate"-> "more black", and then keep doing that until it's almost all black.
Then the next layer of bullshit: Erase all black from the almost-black layer, set "invert colours" so the remaining white spot is now a black spot, and merge down. Keep repeating this until you reach the last layer.
At this point you might say, "wow, what a piece of spaghetti bullshit. It's ugly as hell." And you're correct, but we're working on that. Make a few copies of the spaghetti layer bullshit. Back to filters, pick "waterpixels" and set superpixel color to random. You can probably see what I'm cooking with now.
I like making multiple layer copies of the lineart layer so I can repeat the same filter the same way a few times, and then erase the parts that are too light, too dark, or not the colour I liked, and merge down. Statistically, the colours I eliminate intentionally leave the thing itself the opposite colour - so eliminating deep blue from the rabbit makes it yellow, and eliminating pink from the ground makes it green, and vice versa for the sign. For shadows, same thing - erase yellow and light shades from the shadowy areas to make it more dark and blue, and erase some blue and dark of the lighted area to make it more light and yellow.
Keep going until you are either satisfied or sick of it. Tidy up the details as you please, and you're done. A little bunny on its way to a little bunny strip club.
