Carrying in the Peacock, 1869
By John Dawson Watson Source
I love using the phrase “died badly”. Paints such a succinct picture of the situation. He did not die goodly. This was not a peaceful or sacrificial death for the good of others. The opposite of peacefully dying in your sleep in your own bed at 95. He ate shit and suffered and died. Badly.
Tomorrow? like the thing that killed Macbeth?
The more I learn about Shakespeare and his works, the more I look back at '& Juliet' and think He Would Not Fucking Say That.
creating a book series called "big fear shakespeare" where i expect you to know every reference and definition and instead there are comments in the margins saying things like "what kind of idiot wouldn't know this?"
It's amazing how I read a Shakespeare play and I'm like sure I guess this is kinda clever but then I see one performed by a cast who really get it and ohhhh fuck. Holy fucking fuck. Yeah ok this really is That Good. I see why Shakespeare is such a big deal even today. Fuck.
hi guys my production of Julius Caesar is over and I am Not Okay about it so here’s my list of Amazing Devil songs that represent Brutus and Portia to me with explanations and cited lyrics :)
Fair - THEIR ULTIMATE SONG. so much of this is verbatim what I believe they said to each other in those five hours between the conspirators meeting and Caesar’s assassination. “And he adores her/He watches her get dressed as though she’s hurtling through time/And she is stronger than he’s ever been he knows” in those last moments of domestic peace before their world changes forever, but their understanding is different now that she has definitively proved that she is his equal. “In the midst of all his melodrama she will come and say ‘dear heart it’s me, you don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not, and for some godforsaken reason I’m still here love like I’ve always been before.” they love each other so deeply and her love is the only thing that could have held him back from doing what he did if they had both made different choices.
Marbles - if they had gotten to grow old together. “You stole the best years of my life/you’ll get them back.” “You couldn’t lie to me then, and you sure as hell can’t lie to me now” “I’ve loved you for a hundred years/certainly fucking feels like it.” They’ve been in love since they were kids, married young for love, and even though their lives were cut short young they would have grown old together. they would have been happy. They are equals, they know each other inside and out.
Chords/Inkpot Gods outros - their last moments together before Brutus left for war. “Be good/be safe/be kind.” “If I don’t come back from where I’ve gone just know I loved you all along” they probably both know what the outcome is going to be; but hold on to that sliver of hope that they will see each other again. she begged to come with him, to stay by his side until the end, but he refused. he couldn’t bear to see her die in war, so instead they both died alone.
Welly Boots - Brutus’s unfiltered reaction to hearing the news of Portia’s death while alone, before relating it to Cassius in 4.3. “And when you scream that it’s not fair, it’s like I’ve gone off to the coast, left you behind just standing there, pretending not to see your ghost.” Brutus couldn’t have protected her. He left her behind and realizes that because of that he will never see her again, and her ghost is with him in the same way Caesar’s is. He wanted to protect her “I’ll wrap my scarf around you/place your head into my hands” and now because of his choices he is left alone in a world without her in it. “You were supposed to be my light/how could you leave me here” productions that allow Portia to come back as a ghost for Brutus’s suicide are so special to me. “I know you’re strong enough to do this on your own”
Blossoms - the front that Brutus puts up from Cassius. “With the weight of the things I wish I had said” they wrote each other letters to and from the war. most of them they could not send to keep each other safe. Brutus wrote her a letter every day that he kept with him, hoping she would somehow feel him there with her, and when he hears of her death he wishes he had sent those letters, so she would have known he was all right and that he loved her. “I stare at the soldiers before me.” He couldn’t let anyone see his grief. He knew that Portia would have wanted him to win, to make everything worth it, all of their sacrifices “as they beat their spears/I know im more than what I fear.” He no longer fears dying. He has lost almost everything, and at least if he loses the war he gets to see Portia again. He has nothing left to lose.
