NASA and SpaceX launch astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station. [May 30th, 2020]
true sadness is living an hour away from the Cape and not being able to drive out to go see the launch because my daughter is still too young to last a whole day outside
Just thinking about the sun.
In the 1960s, NASA created a program that invited artists to NASA facilities to document America’s effort to explore space. The artists were given the freedom to paint whatever they wanted during their visits. I especially liked these impressions by Chet Jezierski from 1972.
Glad to be back posting again! I’ve been busy preparing for some upcoming conventions, including working on this botanical illustration to be made into notebooks 🌿

Moon Pattern
… wait, something’s not right with the caption here. That can’t be the same time each day, that’s not how moonrise times work – moonrise at the new moon and at the full moon are almost twelve hours apart.
Okay, I have googled the image and found a more precise explanation: this is the calculated position of the moon at intervals of 24 hours and 41 minutes, thus capturing the way the time of moonrise drifts backward over the course of the lunar month. Further, this composite represents the 28-day cycle but actually took a year to capture, owing to weather difficulties.
Still an amazing composite photo, and deserves proper credit.

More shuttle for you. Pencil drawing with color in Copic markers on paper. Most of my formal training in drawing was in architecture, and it’s pretty clear for better or worse I do draw like an architect still.
You: “The Moon landing.”
Me: “Apollos 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17 would like to have a word with you…”
You can say Alan Shepard, it’s ok.

I love that they had to launch it in the opposite direction that they wanted it to go. Like, I get the whole orbital mechanics gravity assist shenanigans but just looking at it, man, space is messed up.
