Daryl couldn't stop chewing at his lips to save his life, and his heart skipped a beat when he felt Rick's weight settle onto the mattress beside him.
Sweet by CunningLinguist
Daryl and Rick share a bed when they are forced to spend the night away from the group after a run. Daryl has a wet dream, and Rick is extremely understanding.

What Rick is offering is exactly the thing Daryl has always been searching for.
Scattered Ashes by Bennyhatter
Daryl hasn't said a word since the day he woke up in the middle of the woods and his entire life was changed. He can't really call himself a vampire, because garlic and crosses don't bother him at all, and he has yet to burst into flames during the day. He isn't human anymore, though.
How do you keep a secret like that from a paranoid group of people in the midst of the damn apocalypse?

Ironic; the softer-hearted of the two of them was the man currently sawing a rabbit's head from it's neck.

Rick's caught in a web, trapped between his troubled son and the unintentional distance he's put between himself and the others by picking up a shovel instead of a gun.
Rec Notes: The story is a contemplative look into Rick’s angst around the end of season 3. Coupled with the fact that Rick and Daryl are at odds until the very end, it can be kind of serious. That being said, the writing was done in a pleasing literary style, and it had a really strong, satisfying ending.

The apocalypse didn’t happen, and so Carol remains in an abusive relationship. When Daryl meets her, he finds himself in a position to help her. Wanting to help Carol also, Rick enlists Daryl’s aid. Sophia just wants to be a normal twelve-year-old.
Daryl’s never had this many people counting on him before. It changes him, though he’ll never be what Rick seems to think he is.
Rec Notes: I was initially going to rec just the first story in this series “The Sky Begins to Roar”. It reads like a drama/suspense novel with a trouble main character (Daryl) while the second in the series “The Door Begins to Crack” is more of a romance novel. “The Sky Begins to Roar” is amazing as a standalone, but I decided that the series is best when it’s taken all together.
The series is Daryl-centric and is mostly about his character development driven by the compelling plot. His growth is so gradual and realistic that it becomes really satisfying to get to the end where he believes that maybe he does deserve love.
The romance is definitely slow burn, but it had a shockingly sexy and well-earned resolution. There were so many times I wanted to reach through the screen and just shake them, but when they finally got their shit together...dang.

So there aren’t Walkers. Zombies. The world… hasn’t ended.” “No, of course not,” the doctor says, smiling. “That was all a dream. Welcome back to the world, Mr. Grimes.
Shadows Where I Stand by Skarlatha
After the events of "This Sorrowful Life," Rick wakes up in the hospital with the name of the man he can't live without forgotten on his lips and a doctor telling him that the last two years have been a dream. He then begins the long, arduous process of readjusting to life in the real world, but he can't get the image of the beautiful archer out of his head and soon signs start to appear that the dream may actually be real. Could Rick actually find his hunter? Could they actually have a shot at a happy ending? And will Rick finally be able to tell Daryl that he is the love of his life?
Fandom Classic=Must Read
The pacing of Rick slowly realizing through memories and dreams how much he loves/needs Daryl is so well done its effortless. P-I-N-I-N-G

If it meant a serious chance at being with Rick, Daryl could risk it. He could. He could be a man, take the plunge, and ask Rick to be with him. He could… He could ease into it. He could test the waters first, maybe…try flirting with him...He just had to figure out how you flirt with a man. Gay guys did it all the time, so it couldn’t be that hard to learn, right?
A Redneck’s Guide to Figuring Out This “Being Gay” Bullshit by AkaiTsume
If Daryl had known before the apocalypse that he'd fall in love with a man, he'd have watched porn or something so he could figure out how the shit you're supposed to flirt with one.
(Alternatively: 5 ways that Daryl tried to flirt with Rick, and 1 way that finally got his attention.)
This is hilarious and so sweet. It makes me smile from minute one and I never stop through the whole thing.

Don’t Let Me Die Still Wondering
Daryl glances up at him and Rick takes in a sharp breath despite himself, lost for a moment in a sea of deep, dark blue. Nothing like the painting, Rick thinks, that has a color that was too dull, too even and not nearly dark enough, more like the colors of oceans and rivers and not like this--the dark feel of damp denim that’s been worn and used not because it was needed, but because it was loved, because it was comfortable and it fit.
Left of Center, Bullseye on Hearts by Michelle_A_Emerlind
When Daryl and Rick meet, sparks fly and the chemistry is so thick it could be cut with a knife. The only problem? Rick is still stuck in a failing marriage and Daryl is trying to make it work for the millionth time with Shane, even though this attraction to Rick doesn't just feel like lust--it feels something more like love. But with everything stacked against them, do they even have a chance?
I put off reading this one for way too long because I wasn’t sure how I felt about Shane/Daryl, and man do I regret it. (Daryl calling Shane a “D*cklicker” in chapter 1 made me laugh for ages and I was hooked) This fic was awesome. It was so romantic and packed with forbidden love type pining, my heart nearly burst. I thought it was cool that the author didn’t go the obvious route with Shane and Lori either.

Or six vignettes where Daryl has a slight problem
Can’t blame Daryl’s mind for going somewhere dirty when Rick says “On me” while charging into a fight. He’s not the only one.
"I didn’t know it was a joke, alright? I didn’t want to be accused of anything. Can we drop it?” Rick said as he continued to pace. “Are you—are you…actually in love with me?” Daryl finally managed to piece together. “No. Don’t be dumb,” Rick spat.
If Only by SherriffsRevolver
Rick and Daryl end up trapped in an abandoned house while they wait out a passing herd. The stress of their precarious situation gets to Rick and he lets slip something Daryl was never meant to know.
I love Daryl’s characterization in this fic. So often we get Daryl as a blushing virgin whose pining after Rick, but in this fic, he’s closer to what we see in early canon. Brash, foulmouthed, angry. I like that they don’t fall into each other’s arms while the romantic score swells. It’s a fight, with themselves and with each other, all the way to the (happy) end.

"Mornin’ sunshine.” Daryl’s reaction is instantaneous and unrestrained. Every visible bit of skin turns bright red, and he bites his lip so hard Rick is half convinced he will draw blood. In contrast, the colour drains entirely from Rick’s face as he scrambles to think of something to say that won’t make the situation worse. He can hardly explain that the word slipped out because he was unexpectedly struck by how beautiful Daryl looked.
