What's that? A shy Izzy? Forsooth!
I highly recommend the AMC remake of IWtV to anyone, but particularly anyone who felt very let down by OFMD s2. If you’re an Izzy enjoyer, if you liked OFMD s1 for the perceived depth that turned out to be coincidental, if you had high hopes for s2 after episodes 1-3 and liked the heavier tone of those, if you want a show where abuse and DV are actually written intentionally and are handled flawlessly, watch IWtV.
Sometimes I think about posting something like this, but I always end up forgetting about it or think 'fuck it, people don't need/want to see this, people want cool content', but you know, I have had a shitty day at work so here it is:

I've said this before, but the nice thing about the show not getting a third season is that we can go hog-wild with figuring out how The Great David Jenkins* would have written his way out of it, and never be proved wrong.
So far my favorite is "fuckery perpetrated by Izzy + some of the other crew, on Stede and Ed, because he thinks him being dead is what's needed for Ed to give up the Blackbeard role and let himself be properly happy with Stede."
Somewhere around episode two of the new season, we start getting a few glimpses of Izzy out of the corner of various POV characters' eyes, perhaps culminating in a full-on ghost-Izzy performance for the benefit of either Stede or one of the other crew who isn't in on it.
Meanwhile, it's becoming increasingly obvious that removing Izzy from the equation is not having the desired effect on Ed or Stede, and they're working their way toward some sort of plot-related doom. And Izzy, of course, is not making a clean break of it either, hence all the ghost sightings.
The ghost-Izzy scenario might go on for a couple of episodes, IDK, probably depends on budget considerations and Con's salary requirements, but we-the-audience have it confirmed for us that he's not really dead, an episode before the other characters do. Probably at the end of the episode, possibly in a context involving Izzy removing his ghost disguise while declaring, "Fuck this!"
Either way, he shows up to provide some small but crucial information or service at a critical point--like, "it's a leap year, boss," in the first season, but this time framed as being essential to Our Heroes' ability to regroup and succeed. Somewhere in there, he exposits about the whole pretend-to-be-dead-so-Ed-can-move-on plan, and then, emergency over, he makes ready to leave, saying he'll really go away this time, only to have both Ed and the crew ask him to stay, and then one or two other things happen, and somehow we get a happy ending. (Possibly Ed and Stede settling on land again, but this time set up as a relationship & life-course development for which they are ready, and Izzy going off to be First Mate to Captain Frenchie, IDK.)
(*Here I mean the guy we imagined/built up in our minds during the hiatus; dealer's choice how much he overlaps with the actual guy.)

I saw your tags and I think I can help answer that question. The ties at the back are for adjusting how the pants fit. You know how corsets have laces at the back and also fasten in the front? It's like that.
@wisteria-lodge knows more about the specifics of historical fashion than me, and one thing I learned from her is that Stede's pants have little ties in the back so they can be adjusted too.
You saw back-ties on basically all 1700s breeches. Clothing was a lot more expensive before the Industrial Revolution, a single garment was supposed to stay with you though various changes to the size of your body, and so a lot of stealth re-sizing laces were included.
It's actually really nice to see those back-laces in OFMD. It's just a nice little detail you often don't see them in historical tv and film, because back-lacing can look a little goofy by modern standards, and there's no real reason to build an actor's costume to be resizable. But here's another glimpse of them on Ed's Privateer uniform:
Izzy's pants ARE weird though, because unlike Ed and Stede who have your expected 1700s fall-front breeches (albeit in leather)
(notice how there's no fly or center seam, instead they've got two buttons holding up a flap) (and also notice Stede's cute little non-functional, non-period side lacing)
Izzy is wearing these very unusual lace-front trousers.
My personal theory is that Izzy's costume is supposed to be subtly evoking *1600s* men's fashion (instead of 1700s) as a way to make him feel old-fashioned, unchanging, and kind of a stick-in-the mud. Front lacing (or buttoning) like that is something you DID see on 1600s breeches.
That kind of sleeve shape he's created for himself with his sleeve-garters (where it's tight to the elbow and then puffs) is EXTREMELY 1600s.
and so is that specific kind of tied + folded over collar with nothing underneath.
So yeah. The back lacing is one of the few details of his outfit that's 1700s. Also Izzy would look really good with a single teardrop pearl earring ^^^ It would fit his style profile perfectly.

All of this, and also, all of his wardrobe is too *big* for him. It's all taken in in weird places, like the pants and the sleeves and the strange side panels on the vest. So my thought is that he got these pieces from someone older and larger than him, and just went about making them fit him better with zero idea of how to do so.
"How's this?"
"Huh," says Wee John as he leans in to inspect Izzy's knitting. "You did a whole row without fucking up!"
The comment rankles, Izzy's shoulders hunching as he tugs his needles closer to his chest. Knitting has been. Well. It's been harder than he thought. Wee John can knit without even looking at his needles, just the steady clack-clack while he chats and knits at the same time.
Izzy meanwhile still needs to keep his eyes on the wool and the needles and think about the order of the movements.
Wee John pats him on the shoulder, his large hand resting there. "Well done."
Izzy huffs as he looks at his row. He supposed that compared to the previous rows, it looks better. "Thanks." Another pat and the hand leaves. "How do I fix this?" He gestures at the holes in the previous rows.
"Leave that in for now," says Wee John.
"Because you think I can't?"
"I mean, yeah, it's more advanced. But also this way you can see your own progress and how you've improved."
Izzy stays silent at that. "Yeah. Yeah, all right." He likes that thought.
"And if anyone asks," adds Wee John, "you tell 'em those holes are on purpose."
Izzy snorts at that and catches the resulting huff of laughter from Wee John. He smiles and continues to knit. "Thanks."
