June 14th 1997, three children of unknown origins were found wandering the desert of New Mexico, while a fourth child was similarly found by a nearby reservoir the same night. These children grew up to become what fans of Roswell New Mexico know as the Pod Squad; sassy, cowboy hat donning-angsty aliens that give this show its sci-fi charisma.
Join us this June 14-16, 2024, with fan creations, show discussions, and maybe some fun games for a celebration of the day our favorite aliens hatched from their stasis pods.
What is the suggested theme for your fan creations? Simple: The Pod Squad! (Other aliens besides the Pod Squad and human companions need not be excluded!)
Tag your contributions with #rnmhatchday or #rnmhatchday24 so we can see it!
Grab a margarita (before Michael steals it) and an alien carved green hatch chili to snack on while we get the party started!
P.S. Do not invite human significant others unaware of the aliens’ secret! Liz worked too hard on a adorable party banner for it to be hidden away! *looking at you Isobel 👀 *
Thank you for joining us in celebrating Hatch Day! We had a blast organizing this event, and it’s heartwarming to see that our little fandom is still thriving. Whether you contributed content or engaged with our posts, your participation made it special, and we loved seeing everyone’s enthusiasm. 🎉
And guess what? Late submissions are still open! 🥳 If you hatch any creations inspired by the event, we would be delighted to see them!
Still use the tag #rnmhatchday24 or #rnmhatchday so we can see it. If you can, please add your new or previously posted fanfics to the AO3 collection RNM_Hatch_Day_Party.
A ficlet featuring Max and Isobel bringing Michael over to meet their mother for the first time (pre-canon). Rated Gen, 660 words for the @rnmhatchdayparty!
~~~
Michael is feeling extremely nervous, but he tries not to let it show as he walks a little behind Isobel and Max, pushing his bicycle. They’re both talking excitedly back and forth, but Michael isn’t listening to them. Today is the day he’s going to meet their mom for the first time, and he really wants it to go well.
Isobel and Max have both carefully planned out the whole day for him. They waited for an early-release school day, because they knew their dad would still be at work. Max had shoved one of the polo shirts he’d outgrown into his backpack so that Michael could change at school before they left. He acted like he didn’t want to change, but Isobel’s insistence wins him over. At least his jeans passed inspection, since he hadn’t been working at the junkyard that day.
Just before they round the corner to their house, Max and Isobel stop and give Michael a once-over. Isobel declares him ready, and Michael smiles cautiously and gives her a thumbs up as he ditches his bike on the curb.
“She’s going to love you,” Isobel says with a gentle hand on his arm.
Then she marches up the front steps and pushes open the unlocked front door. Michael only spares a second to marvel at the fact that they just keep their front door unlocked before Max shouts, “Hey Mom, we’re home!”
“Is your friend here?” She calls back.
Mrs. Evans emerges from the kitchen with an apron tied around her waist, and her hair in a sharp updo without one hair out of place. Michael is already intimidated.
“Yes Momma, this is Michael!” Isobel gestures towards Michael.
Max elbows him lightly in the ribs and clears his throat. Oh, right. Michael is supposed to say something.
“Hello Ma’am, nice to meet you.”
“I hope you’re staying for dinner,” she says with a smile. It seems genuine.
“I don’t know, Ma’am. I have to get back home soon.” Michael says the lines they’d rehearsed earlier, so that he has an excuse to leave.
“Oh alright, well it’s lovely to meet you.”
Michael takes a deep breath. Maybe this will all be fine.
Isobel wraps her arm around his elbow, and he’s promptly marched up the stairs to their room. They’re mostly left to their own devices for an hour. Max shows Michael his book collection, and then Isobel busts out a bunch of CDs for Michael to pick from. At his current house, his foster dad just has a radio and some cassettes, so the CDs seem completely foreign to him. He picks one anyway, and they blast music on Isobel’s hot pink boombox.
Mrs. Evans brings them all lemonade and cookies. Michael doesn’t think anyone has ever brought him fresh-baked cookies before. He thanks her profusely.
It’s so much better than when he sneaks into Max’s window to hang out at night, because he doesn’t have to speak in whispers or keep himself from walking when Max is walking (which would make the floor creak too much).
He really does want to go, though, before Mr. Evans comes home. He doesn’t want to push his luck.
When he starts to climb out the window, Max stops him.
“You can go out the front door, remember?” Max says.
Michael starts to laugh at himself for the silly mistake, but he catches the sad tilt of Max’s mouth and how Isobel won’t make eye contact with him.
“Oh c’mon, today was fun,” Michael says, wanting to soothe them.
They both beam at him, and Michael smiles back. Then Michael heads down the stairs to say goodbye to Mrs. Evans.
“You’re always welcome back, Michael,” She says, and then presses a baggie of cookies into his hand. He’s not sure if that’s a standard thing moms are supposed to say, but he appreciates it either way.
He waves to all three of them as he walks back out to his bike, and breathes a huge sigh of relief. He tucks the cookies into his backpack for later, and hopes he gets invited back through the front door again.
Nathan Dean as Max Evans in Roswell New Mexico || Happy Birthday Nathan Dean Parsons 👽
[Your on screen chemistry is amazing. I mean how long did it take to build that up?]
Nathan: “Honestly, about three seconds I think. I remember- cause I was initially reading for the part of Michael. And I- you know audition, audition, audition. {Jeanine} was already signed on at this point- and I just kept reading for Michael and finally one day they were like- why don’t you try Max? Like maybe that will work better. And that one clicked a little bit- but then I had to go home and they called me back to have a chemistry reading with {Jeanine}. And I remember standing in the rain- and she walks up with an umbrella, and we have worked together years ago. And she walked up and it was just immediately like ‘okay, yeah, hi what’s up?’. We can make this work.
I adore the fact that you included the cupcakes, and that everyone loves those so much! People making art/writing fic based on our posts and edits is making me 🥹 🤩
A slight AU where Isobel visits Michael in his airstream for the first time. Rated Gen, 556 words.
I started this for the @rnmhatchdayparty, and I'm not sure it's exactly on point but it is about the Pod Squad :)
“So this is the room where it happens?” Isobel says with her arms out wide, teasing.
“Ha, you’re hilarious,” Michael deadpans.
He turns his attention to the table in front of him with some kind of power tool in his hand, but Isobel is too intrigued by the scenery to watch what he’s doing.
When Michael said he wanted to show Isobel something, she’d never expected him to have an entire bunker hidden underneath his air stream. Except the strangeness didn’t stop there, because once she’d descended down the narrow metal staircase, she found the space to be brimming with interesting odds and ends.
There are jars with brightly colored liquids stacked along a shelf, and massive bundles of wire. There are all kinds of electronics with their backs off and their guts spilling out all over the huge metal table in the center.
What’s most interesting are the glowing pink and purple pieces of glass that are resting on a small shelf off to the right. As she approaches them, the light shifts even more and the glowing intensifies. It sure feels like the glass is reacting to her presence.
“You feel it too?” Michael says as he comes up behind Isobel.
Isobel nods. “What are they?”
“Alien. At least I think. There’s no substance I can find on Earth that’s like it.”
Isobel can’t help the small gasp that escapes her as she reaches out to touch. The colors swirl and dart away from her finger, but when she removes her hand the colors coalesce again.
“It’s beautiful,” she admits, just a little awestruck. A million questions start to swirl in her mind. She hardly ever thinks about where they came from anymore, but this glass is a tangible reminder that the three of them are alien. She doesn’t know if she likes having such a reminder.
“I wanted you to see them. Even though I haven’t figured out much yet.”
“What about Max?” Isobel says, reaching out to touch the glass again.
“I wasn’t sure he’d be interested.”
Isobel turns sharply to look at him, a rebuke already on the tip of her tongue, but Michael’s brow is furrowed like he’s worried. His expression gives her pause. Michael looks down at his boot, seemingly withering away from Isobel’s look, and scuffs it against the pavement.
“But I’ll show him, too,” He quickly adds. “He had work today.”
Isobel nods, satisfied. If the glass is really alien, Max needs to know too. All three of them are in this together, no matter what kind of petty fight Max and Michael are in at the moment.
When Michael turns back to his work table, his shoulders seem completely relaxed. It’s obvious that he’s in his element here. Plus it actually feels way more lived in than most of the rooms he’s stayed in. She watches him for a little while, glad that he seems to finally have a place for himself.
“Thank you, Michael. For sharing this with me.” She gestures at the entire space, not just the glass.
Michael gently bumps his knuckles against her shoulder and smiles.
Isobel knows it's hard for Michael to be open with anyone, and she sure doesn’t fault him for that. But she’s grateful that, at least on the eve of graduation, they still are as close as ever.
The alien-human mischief from this post continues in this sequel!
As the party unfolds, Kyle reprimands Rosa for spiking the drinks. Clearly, she's not thrilled. However, his problems are just beginning. Remember Maria and Isobel's UFO conjuring spell earlier? It worked a little too well. But, aside from Jenna, everyone is oblivious to the uninvited guests. The question is: what happens next? 👽🛸
