5 HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS IN BALDWIN COUNTY THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS!
The Christmas season always brings a flurry of activity. With all sorts of things to do, it is hard to choose from the hundreds of local activities. Here are five that we like. If you haven’t been to any of these, take the opportunity this year to check them out.
Christmas Book Reading: Santa Claus will read “Twas the Night Before Christmas” at the Longleaf Room of Delta Hall in Spanish Fort, Alabama, on Dec. 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Twas the Night Before Christmas” is an American Christmas classic what was first published in 1837 by an anonymous poet, and it has since become a staple during the holiday season. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served at the reading, and children are encouraged to wear pajamas and blankets.
City of Fairhope New Year’s Eve Family Celebration: The City of Fairhope will again be hosting their annual New Year’s Eve Celebration in the streets of downtown Fairhope. Residents and visitors are invited to bring their families and ring in the New Year. The festivities will take place at the corner of Fairhope Avenue and Church Street featuring live entertainment, children’s face painting, plus fireworks once the clock strikes twelve. Don't miss this exciting downtown celebration in Fairhope! Many downtown restaurants will be open for those who wish to eat in downtown and then just hangout until midnight. Section Street will be left open to through traffic; handicap parking will be available on Section Street in designated handicap areas and in the parking lot behind Julwin’s.
Christmas 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run: December 13th, to be held at the Community Kids Park at 9 am. Entry fees are $25 for adults and $2 for age 14 and under. Apply online at northbaldwinchamber.com or pic up an application at the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce on McMeans Avenue, Bay Minette City Hall on D’Olive Street or Baldwin County High School on Tiger Drive.
Fish River Christmas Boat Parade: December 20th, organized by Big Daddy’s Grill. This parade starts at the US 98 bridge at dusk and travels upriver stopping at Big Daddy’s and ending at the Baldwin County 32 bridge.
Artic Express: November 28th to December 24th, Wales West RV Resort and Light Railway’s Arctic Express will be operating weekends until December 15th and nightly for the rest of the season. At a cost of $15 plus tax per person (2 and under are free), you can ride an original steam train and view a fantastic light display on the way to the North Pole, where the children can visit with Santa and get a wooden toy at the Winter Wonderland barn.
Most of all, enjoy all that this special time of year brings. Spend time with the family. Enjoy each other. We get so caught up in the shopping and presents, and suddenly we find the tree is down and the ornaments put away, and we never sang a Christmas carol, or visited a shut-in. We didn’t have a cup of cocoa with the children while enjoying the lights on our tree. We didn’t put the kids in the car in their pajamas to go look at the neighborhood lights. These are the things memories are made of. When the gifts are broken or neglected, or only a remembrance, we remember the evenings in pajamas, the caroling with friends, and decorating the tree. Make time. It is a gift only you can give. Happy holidays from Robertsdale Dental Care.

Reasons to be Thankful for Your Teeth This Thanksgiving Season
This time of year, it comes standard to list the things that you are thankful for. Often that means people, possessions, skills, and whatever else we might thank our lucky stars that we have in our life. One thing we use fairly often, but might not remember to be thankful for is our teeth. That's right, those pearly white chompers that are attached to your gums.
Teeth are more important than we realize. Yet we rely on them every single day, whether or not you're aware of all they're doing at the time. So what all can your teeth do anyway? And why should we be so thankful for them in the first place?
Their first reason is obvious: teeth help you eat. Without them, you wouldn't be able to tear into that tasty Thanksgiving meal, let alone take a single bite. That's also a reason to be thankful for healthy teeth – those that are firmly planted, don't cause any pain with pressure from eating, and that are fully functional when biting and chewing. That's an impressive task alone, right?
Next, you should be thankful for your teeth as they allow you to communicate with others. Believe it or not, teeth are what help you make and pronounce words in a way that allows them to be understood. Of course, the tongue is helpful, as the mouth itself, but without your teeth, words would be much harder to form, and even far more difficult to understand by others.
Finally, teeth are what help you chew and prep food so that you're able to swallow. Though you've taken bites, without the ability to grind down ingredients even further, you wouldn't be able to swallow or digest your nutrients. With teeth, however, you can eat from start to finish in a manner that allows you to enjoy and digest each and every single meal.
Do you still need another reason to be thankful for your teeth? They protect your gums, help hold your mouth in place, and they allow you to flash the world with your beautiful smile. Just think how different we would look without teeth? It might be comforting knowing that no one else would have teeth, either, but as they're present, you can remember just how beautiful and telling they are, every time you see someone show their facial joy. Or, every time you show your own.
There are many reasons to be thankful for your teeth: eating, in taking bites and chewing your food, communicating with others, smiling, and whatever other reason you might be grateful that you have teeth. Whatever your favorite reason (or if your favorite reason is all of them), don’t take your porcelain additions for granted this holiday season, or any other time of year. Remember to give your teeth the proper thanks, and the proper care they need to keep doing their job, good and strong. If you plan on traveling make sure to take floss and a good toothbrush for the trip and model excellent oral care for your younger relatives.

5 New Thanksgiving Traditions to Try with Your Family This Year From Robertsdale Dental Care
It's a time to give thanks – the word is right there in the name. Dating back to historic traditions, the United States has long since celebrated this day of being grateful for what we have, showing appreciation toward others, and other kind ways to show we care for each other. Generally, that's done through an elaborate meal consisting of turkey and trimmings, as well as plenty of traveling to see distant family and friends. Oh, and don't forget the pumpkin pie, of course!
While these traditions hold many soft spots in our hearts, it's also time where we can branch out into new traditions. By sharing these new practices with our families, we can create entirely new ways to celebrate this festive holiday.
1. Actually Give Thanks
Tell others why you are thankful for them, or for things that are in your life. Take time to sit down and give each person a turn to share just why they are so thankful on each Thanksgiving. This can be during your epic meal, or any other time where all are together and spending time together.
2. Give Back to Others
What better way to show how blessed you are than to share that same sentiment with others? Whether you give food donations, household goods, or even your time helping others, this doesn't have to be a gift that's shared only on Thanksgiving, but throughout the entire year!
3. Walking it Off
Thanksgiving is certainly known for coming up with a huge meal – but have you taken the time to think about how many calories you're actually taking in? Even if it's a one-time splurge, get together with those around you and go for a long walk, jog the morning of, or plan a family touch football game to help offset some of those delicious foods you'll be taking in.
4. Everyone Pitches In
How many times have you been to a big family meal where Grandma does all the cooking? Or one person is forced to do all of the dishes? Instead of putting a huge burden on a few people (after all, you're all benefiting here), split up the chores equally. It's also a great time to get away from the TV and to talk with one another while you work.
5. Something Quirky!
Every family has their own thing that's specific to them. Maybe it's a special dish, a game of cards, an after meal activity – whatever it is, it's something that you do each year, and that you all do together. If you don't already have such a list in place, consider branching out and creating a new tradition that everyone can enjoy. It's a great way to expand on the holiday and to turn it into a beloved and memorable event.
Consider starting some new traditions with your family this year. From what you cook, to who does the decorating, to every fun activity before and after, this can be a great way to show just how thankful for one another you truly are.

Are You Familiar With These Common Signs Of A Cavity Or Tooth Decay?
Most adults and children have developed tooth decay at some point in their lives. Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity of the cavity. Certain occurrences, such as stains or pain, can be caused by other factors like eroded fillings or drinking too much coffee. With so many symptoms, and since everyone’s teeth and enamel are different, it’s imperative to schedule regular checkups with a dentist to maintain oral health. Here are common symptoms of tooth decay, brought to you by Robertsdale Dental Care.
Toothache
A toothache can be caused by a variety of symptoms, but it’s not uncommon for this kind of pain to be caused by tooth decay. It can be a sharp pain or mild ache. The pain can come and go or can be prolonged. An achy tooth is always a good cause to schedule an appointment with your dentist.
Tooth Sensitivity
Sensitive teeth are often caused by a weak layer of enamel. Some people may experience irritation when eating hot, cold, or sugary foods without cavities. Other people have reported sensitivity to metal. Regardless, weak enamel makes it easier to acquire tooth decay and allow bacteria to affect your teeth.
Discoloring or Spots
Cavities that form on the top of teeth (rather than between or behind them) are sometimes visible. Small spots or discoloration may only be indicative that you need your teeth are stained, but at worse, these are signs you have developed tooth decay.
Pain When Biting Down
Enamel is extremely hard and durable, but in areas it has eroded away from tooth decay, the tooth becomes soft and sensitive. This can cause pain when chewing, biting, or applying pressure to any affected parts of the tooth. Exposed nerves can also be a culprit. While even air touching the area can cause pain, sometimes removing debris lodged underneath your gums can alleviate suffering.
Holes in Teeth
There isn’t a more obvious symptom of tooth decay. Holes or deep pits in your teeth, which are different than cracks or fractures, can only be caused by long-term damage due to tooth decay. Schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately.
Remember that long-term damage from tooth decay, such as gum disease, tooth loss, infection, and inflammation, is only possible if cavities are left untreated. Regularly floss and brush your teeth, and don’t procrastinate appointments with your dentist. Not only will your dentists X-ray for decay, they also thoroughly clean your teeth to help reduce the risk of cavities. Schedule an appointment at Robertsdale Dental Care to ensure you have the best oral are this side of the Bay.

4 Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them
Many people say a smile is the first thing the notice about others. A lot of is value placed on having an attractive smile. It can be especially frightening when something threatens your pearly whites. In the list below we’ll give you a few common dental emergencies and what to do in order to mitigate any damage to your smile.
Broken/Chipped Tooth
This is a fairly common occurrence, with around one-third of all adults in their 40s having at least one chipped or broken tooth. If the chip is minor and you’re not in any immediate pain, there is no need to schedule an emergency appointment. However, it is very important to have the tooth checked out relatively soon, as there may be damage that isn’t apparent on the surface, which can affect the integrity of the tooth. If the tooth is severely chipped, schedule an emergency appointment with the dentist. If you find your teeth chipping more often than is normal, talk to the dentist about anything that could be weakening your teeth, such as poor nutrition or grinding during the night.
Knocked Out Tooth
This is a nightmare for most people, especially when the tooth is in the front of their mouth. If one of your teeth is knocked out for any reason, find the tooth and gently rinse it off, if it’s dirty. Don’t try to scrub or disinfect it, as this can damage the delicate root structure, which is essential for replacement. If you can stand the discomfort, the tooth should be placed back in the socket as soon as possible. The quicker this is done, the more likely it is the tooth can be successfully reattached. When the tooth has been replaced into the socket, see the dentist as quickly as possible so it can be secured.
Tooth Ache
This may not sound like an emergency, but anyone who’s ever had a painful toothache will beg to differ. If you are suffering from a painful toothache, dissolve salt in warm water and gargle. Try flossing to make sure the pain isn’t being caused by food lodged between your teeth. If you have any swelling, apply a cold pack to the affected area. If the pain persists, schedule an appointment with the dentist immediately so they can determine what is causing the pain and find a solution.
Lost Filling/ Crown
Fillings and crowns are placed in the mouth after cavity removal to protect the tooth from further damage. If you lose one of these, it’s best to get to the dentist as soon as possible to get it replaced. If you lose a filling, you can use some dental cement from the drug store, or a small piece of sugar-free gum to protect the exposed area until you can make it to the dentist. If you lose a crown, you can try to replace it temporarily with dental cement or denture adhesive until you can make it to the dentist.
As a general rule, if there is severe pain, swelling, or bleeding that won’t stop, see the dentist immediately. In most other cases, an appointment within a few days will be fine. Whatever the case, don’t panic, and trust that your dentist will have you feeling and looking better in no time!

The Anatomy of a Tooth
Teeth are the hardest substance in the human body. Contrary to popular belief, teeth are not bone. Instead, they are made up of four different types of tissue with varying levels of hardness. Understanding your teeth can help you make smart decisions to preserve your oral health. Here are a few basic anatomy facts about your teeth, brought to you from Robertsdale Dental Care.
Enamel
One of the four tissues that comprises a tooth, enamel is the hardest tissue not only in your teeth but your entire body. Enamel is a thin outer cover for the tooth that protects them during daily use. Eating, grinding and chewing normally results in wear on your teeth, and it also shields your teeth from temperature extremes.
Dentin
Another of the four main tissues that make up your teeth, dentin is calcified tissue that is made up of four different layers of itself. Dentin is actually yellow in color, so if enamel wears enough, the yellow color will begin to show. Exposed dentin due to worn enamel can cause tooth sensitivity.
Pulp Cavity
As the center of the tooth, dental pulp is beneath the enamel and dentin layers. The pulp cavity is occupied by pulp, which consists of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Its primary purpose is to create the dentin layer that rests above it, and it also contains blood vessels that nourish the teeth. The pulp cavity (or chamber) also provides a sensory function for the tooth.
Root Canal
A root canal is a passageway for the pulp or blood vessels and nerves, inside the tooth from the pulp cavity into the alveolar (jaw) bone that a tooth rests in. Once a tooth matures, it can actually function without the pulp within the pulp chamber because it will be nourished by the tissue surrounding it.
Cementum
This is the hard tissue that covers the root of the tooth and attaches the tooth to the periodontal ligament, which is a special tissue that helps attach our teeth to the alveolar (jaw) bone.
Crown & Root
These two terms refer to the portions of the root above and below the root. The crown consists of the enamel, dentin, and pulp cavity. The root also consists of dentin as well as the root canal and the cementum. With a basic understanding of the anatomy of a tooth, you can make intelligent decisions regarding your oral health. Consult with your dentist at Robertsdale Dental so you can learn to proactively protect your teeth from wear, tear, and cavities.

5 Dangerous Signs of Periodontal Disease from Robertsdale Dental
Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is caused by bacteria in the form of dental plaque. Symptoms are not always immediately visible, and often times patients do not show any signs of periodontal disease until they reach their 40s or 50s. It’s often the result of poor dental hygiene, but habitual smokers and individuals with compromised immune systems are highly susceptible to developing periodontal disease. Unseen, gum damage and bone loss can wreak havoc on a patient’s oral health and visible appearance. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.
1.) Bleeding while flossing or brushing
Pay attention to your teeth and gums when performing personal oral care. If your gums bleed while flossing or brushing, or if your gums are red and swollen, schedule an appointment at Robertsdale Dental Care immediately. Gingivitis is often an early symptom of gum disease. In addition to pain, periodontal disease can allow other bacteria or diseases to flourish in your mouth, which can lead to long-term damage such as tooth loss.
2.) Bad breath or bad taste
Bacteria in the mouth is the cause of bad breath and can also be the cause of periodontal disease. A bad taste or foul odor in your mouth can be signs of infection or a deteriorating filling. If regular flossing, brushing, and mouthwash do not remove the odor or taste, consult your dentist immediately. It’s most likely the precursor to periodontal disease.
3.) Loose or sensitive teeth
Periodontal disease will eventually cause the gum line to recede, which will expose tooth roots. These exposed roots will cause teeth to feel increasingly sensitive to changes in temperatures and pressure or other external stimuli, such as metal. As the gums recede, gum grip around teeth will loosen and cause pocket formation, or space between gums and teeth. A dentist can identify pocket formations during a routine checkup.
4.) Changes in teeth positioning
Periodontal disease can not only cause gums to recede and loosen the grip around teeth, but it can also cause teeth to decay and/or bone loss in the jaw. This can result in loose teeth or a shift in positioning. Any changes in bite or any pain while eating is a dangerous sign of periodontal disease and a dentist should be contacted immediately.
5.) Habitual smoking
Habitual smokers are far more likely to develop periodontal disease than nonsmokers, so routine dental care is critical. The consequences of periodontal disease, including tooth loss, occur more rapidly in smokers. Additionally, treatment for gum disease, such as gum grafts or implants, are less likely to be successful for smokers. Overall, in cases where gum disease did not respond to treatment, 90% were smokers. Even smokers with good oral hygiene habits should visit a dentist regularly.
You may be at high risk if you have all of these symptoms. Give Robertsdale Dental Care a call to set up your appointment today.
