I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.
Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."
Don't leave your friends and even acquaintances to go to the hospital alone. If they don't have someone already going with them and don't explicitly tell you they don't want you there, go to advocate for them. Outcomes for sick people change dramatically when they have someone else there to observe doctors (making them know they can't get away with negligence) and note symptoms from an outside perspective.
Going to the hospital is scary and even someone totally unprepared to be a medical advocate or physical support will be better than nothing, purely from their presence. You can grab food, be there with your phone to search if theirs dies, go in search of a doctor, distract them from pain or discomfort... go with them.
At 31 I had a brain aneurysm. I was one of the 50% of people who make it to the hospital alive. A friend drove me in for "the worst headache of my life" and "I can't bend my neck" (why I decided to go to the ER in the first place). I was one of the further 50% who survived once they reached the hospital at *all* because while there I mentioned my mom gets terrible migraines and they wanted to send me home with migraine medication to sleep and my friend *advocated for me*. She said something along the lines of, "No, you don't understand, my friend does not go to the ER for a migraine, she probably would try to walk off a broken leg. There is something seriously *wrong*." I do not remember this at all. She told me later. I vaguely remember them saying I needed to get a lumbar puncture (which THANKFULLY I ALSO FORGOT because apparently they suck). Blood in my CSF. Brain hemorrhage. I barely got to text my mom in another state what was happening so she could come before I was rushed into surgery. My friend messaged my sister through instagram and coordinated picking them up from the airport and getting my keys to them so they could stay at my apartment while I was in the hospital. Had my friend not been there, I'd be dead. I will have been dead 4 years, now. And I very well could have died even if they rushed me into the second I walked in the door and my mom and sister would have only found out what happened well after I was gone. Please advocate for your friends in any way you can. Even if it's making sure you have their emergency contacts or know someone who can reach their loved ones. Even if it's reassuring them you can feed their cats if they have to stay overnight at all.

I saw a post on a terf blog before I blocked it from someone being like "Ummm is anybody else really concerned about the rise of antisocial kinks like pissing" and it made me laugh so hard I almost did a little antisocial kink myself
Ok but when you say "restorative justice" do you mean "hegemonic power structures need to provide ways for people who've done bad things to reintegrate into society" or do you mean "you, personally, someone with no hegemonic power whatsoever, need to keep forgiving people who've hurt you forever" because those are like. Pretty different.
What is it with diabetes that makes people think they know more about it than the people who have the disorder. People hear the word diabetes and flock to compete with who can be the most ableist.
Found a video of a girl showing off Diet Soda detector strips (if there's any diabaddies that see this and want it I can link them, they're super helpful), and half of the comments were "you're diabetic you should just be drinking water..." First of all, not only are you just wrong, but you seriously expect diabetics to just never enjoy themselves? Ever?.
Saw another comment under a video about type 1 saying "you did this to yourselves. you ate too much sugar and you got yourself into this situation." And it's just so funny because they're Wrong™️. Type one diabetes is autoimmune and fully hereditary, and not at all effected by diet.
I mean, I know the answer. It's diet culture. People on their fancy diets think they're a superior human being because other people are "unhealthier" than them, and they hear diabetes and think "big fat and lazy with a bad diet" and think they're allowed to walk all over them since they're so superior. Despite the fact that it's a completely false stereotype that doesn't apply to most diabetics.
And btw please do not come under this post saying "but other disorders have that too" this is a vent post about diabetes. Do not derail.
The other thing about diabetes type 2 is that what the evidence actually suggests is that there's an underlying metabolic disorder that causes weight gain and sugar craving before actual diabetes develops.
A lot of type 2's start out as hypoglycemic -- their pancreas is over-producing insulin, causing blood sugar crashes. Insulin stuffs sugar into fat cells, causing people to get fat, if there's too much of it. The overproduction of insulin is a response to slow-growing insulin resistance. Because sugar is a vital part of human energy, people who cannot easily process sugar due to insulin resistance and insulin over-response may crave sugar in order to have enough energy to function.
So you didn't get diabetes because you got fat. You got fat because you were on track to get diabetes. and nobody is addressing the metabolic disorder. Hypoglycemics can be quite skinny -- I was for years. But if you're skinny, nobody is concerned about the fact that you are passing out when you haven't had enough to eat. Because only being fat is ever a medical problem. People who are "normal" weight obviously have nothing wrong with their metabolism whatsoever. :-(
To add somewhat to the above, type 2 is genetic. You can’t get it solely from diet alone. As a specialist nurse crudely but not entirely incorrectly once said to me “if it was just diet then every fat/unhealthy person would have diabetes”.
And now going back to the top point, I know exactly what video op is referring to and she made a different video a few weeks prior specifically about harmful comments to t1d’s and instead of getting the point, heaps of comments were basically to the effect of “but we can bully t2ds bc they brought this on themselves, they deserve to be mocked”. HUH. DO YOU HEAR YOURSELVES.
I have many chronic conditions. T1D is absolutely the worst by the landslide it’s not even close. I would not wish this on anyone. If you ever think you’d like to make a comment on someone else’s diabetes, of any type, do not do it. If you are a diabetic I trust you to be sensible, otherwise, keep your mouth shut.
