I like your explaination about batfamily or more to dick-family. I haven't read all the og stories, so your explaination is really helpful to know the dynamics between all of them.

I have a question. I don't follow Urban Legends, but I've seen some screenshot pages of it. At the end of Jason's story, didn't Bruce finally reach out to Jason and willing to have connection again? Or was Urban Legends forced?

Urban Legends is an anthologies book. And it featured a Red Hood centric story called ‘Cheer’ that had six parts, the story is now complete.

At the end of UL, Bruce and Jason didn’t end up connecting, I will actually say that things didn’t change at all between them. Jason, who decided to not use guns anymore, said that he wasn’t making the change for Bruce or his rules, he was making the change for himself, because he needed to figure out what he wanted to do. I will leave the panels down here.

So, Bruce and Jason “connecting” wasn’t forced (because they didn’t connect) what was forced though was the whole story. Urban Legends: Cheer is a story made with the sole purpose of monetizing the “Batfamily”. The story did, and I am not exaggerating, nothing good for Jason. The only thing it did was harm pre-Robin, Robin Jason and Red Hood’s characterizations.

I will link here the reviews that I made about each part, because I talk more in depth about my issues with each issue, if you read them, you will notice how I grow increasingly frustrated by Chip Zdarsky’s writing and his Jason characterization.

Now, the panels that you might have seen of the last part of urban Legends might be these (I might be wrong).

These panels come from a very out of character illusion that Jason is having. I cannot emphasize how out of character this illusion is. Jason wanting to be part of this happy and normal version of the “Batfamily” is just character assassination at its finest (or at least that’s my opinion). Even in his illusion (that was provoked by the Cheer gas that supposedly makes you see a world where you are truly happy) Jason isn’t convinced that its real. So, it is very messy.

If it wasn’t that what you saw then maybe it was the panels from Bruce’s vision, that show him having killed the Joker and welcoming Jason to the family once more. Those panels are also a mess but not because Bruce “killed” the Joker but because no one truly believes that Bruce will live a happy and normal life if he kills the clown, Gotham has several villains and weird people. Also, Bruce killing the Joker at this point in time kinda means nothing so yeah.

And if none of that was what you saw, then maybe it was the letter that Bruce left in Jason’s living space with a brand-new suit with a bat symbol on it.

The thing in the end is that Bruce and Jason didn’t work anything out, they didn’t talk about anything that might lead the reader to think that things are good between them. DC is very vague when it comes to resolving the immense problems that the Bat related characters have with each other. DC basically tried to duct tape Bruce and Jason’s relationship with a suit that has a bat-symbol, insinuating that Jason is welcomed to the “Batfamily”. But nothing of real essence was achieved, at least I don't think so.

Jason was shown in the last Robin issue teaming up with the other Robins so they could make Damian go back to Bruce and there it is insinuated that Jason has "gone back home" as in the "Batfamily" but none of this is done with actual development of Jason's relationship with anyone.

I don’t know about you anon, but I don’t really like the idea of Jason going back to Bruce or anything Batman related because Bruce has done some horrible things to Jason.

But if you like the idea of the Batfamily or think that Bruce and Jason are on good terms now then I am happy that you are able to get some sort of joy from the current books!

Oh! Just a clarification, the dynamics that you saw in my Dick-Family post aren’t real, they are the version that I made up in order to justify a relationship like that in comics.

The way that things are handled in comics don’t leave room for the “Batfamily” to actually be a viable concept! Please don’t take the Dick-Family thing as comics canon because it really isn’t. Sorry if I made you believe that Jason, Dick and the others actually have a good relationship, because they don’t.

Hold on, I have opinions about retcons of Jason’s death

Imo, Sheila Haywood is essential to that story. Without her, Jason is a foolish, impulsive kid who runs into danger even after Bruce specifically told him to wait. He’s impatient, he runs into a warehouse with the Joker inside to confront him, and gets killed

But with her there, Jason is a kid trying to save his mom’s life. He’s not driven by impulse or recklessness, he’s driven by love. He sees Sheila walking into a warehouse that he knows the Joker is inside, and he risks his own safety to protect her. He only just found out he has a mom who’s alive, and he doesn’t want to lose her. He trusts her

And she betrays him. She lures him into the warehouse and delivers him to the Joker. She stands by and watches while Jason is beaten. And when the Joker’s done, when he turns on her and leaves her in the warehouse with the bomb, Jason still tries to save her. She let him get tortured and he still tries to untie her so she can escape. When he realizes there’s no time, he lays down in front of the bomb to try and shield her

So of course, when he comes back as Red Hood, of course Jason doesn’t trust parental figures. Of course he can’t trust Bruce anymore, won’t listen to him when he says he’s wrong. He trusted Sheila, and she sold him out, got him tortured and killed. And Bruce, who he trusted to always be there for him, got there too late. Even if he doesn’t blame Bruce, that trust is shattered

Sheila Haywood is essential to the story of Jason’s death, because removing her changes how you understand Jason, both as Robin and as Red Hood. He wasn’t a reckless child who didn’t listen, he was a kid who just wanted to protect his mom

I feel like the reboot did Jason and Bruce’s relationship a disservice

And I say that, because there’s some very specific things that went down with the creation of Jason Todd’s character that could have been smoothed out in a company wide reboot and they didn’t do it.

Like pls stop trying to mess with utrh cause y’all will always make it horrible,writers don’t understand the core of the story is about Bruce and Jason that’s why so many ppl like it not because “Jason goes bad” but even when they go that route without any of the emotional drama everything post utrh has always painted Jason’s robin adventures as being overly aggressive “non order taking child soldier “and “lost cause” which..... doesn’t work because then your not even phased that Jason as a child/Bruce’s son and Jason as red hood are different ppl , that’s the SHOCK like how can u miss the point so badly

They need to stop using this storyline if they can’t write it well ESPECIALLY if they’re just using it as a plot point/fan service cause like 3 different franchises are using it to get fan money/support atm and I’m like :/ use something ELSE

Tumblr won't let me put in many more pictures, but Jason still tried to save Sheila after he was beaten so badly that she, a doctor was surprised he was still alive. His selflessness gave her a heel realization and she tried to save him too, but the door was locked and they both died. Sheila's last words were how good of a boy Jason was.

Sheila was a relief worker in Ethiopia that Jason believed was his mother at a point where a mother was what he wanted most in the world. She gave neither him, nor Bruce any reason to believe she wasn't trustworthy, and Jason wanted to save her.

To reiterate, Jason didn't die because he was reckless, Jason died because the Joker thought it would be funny to murder a child, and a child was lured into his path by an adult that child trusted.

That is all, it's the only reason, no more reasons needed. Goodnight.

I just want to compile scans of letters regarding Jason Todd's death in one place. None of them are mine, but still

I particularly love that one guy who went "Fuck it, if DC doesn't give Jason proper funeral, I will do it myself" and wrote a very nice requiem. Really speaks volumes of humanities love for fictional characters)

A History Of Black Cowboys And The Myth That The West Was White

A quick internet search of “American cowboy” yields a predictable crop of images. Husky men with weathered expressions can be seen galloping on horseback. They’re often dressed in denim or plaid, with a bandana tied ‘round their neck and a cowboy hat perched atop their head. Lassos are likely being swung overhead. And yes, they’re all white.

Contrary to what the homogenous imagery depicted by Hollywood and history books would lead you to believe, cowboys of color have had a substantial presence on the Western frontier since the 1500s. In fact, the word “cowboy” is believed by some to have emerged as a derogatory term used to describe Black cowhands.

An ongoing photography exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem celebrates the legacy of the “Black Cowboy” while chronicling the unlikely places around the country where cowboy culture thrives today. Through their photographs, artists like Brad Trent, Deanna Lawson and Ron Tarver work to retire the persistent myth that equates cowboys with whiteness.

In the 1870s and ’80s, the Village Voice reports, approximately 25 percent of the 35,000 cowboys on the Western Frontier were black. And yet the majority of their legacy has been whitewashed and written over.

One notable example of this erasure manifests in the story of Bass Reeves, a slave in Arkansas in the 19th century who later became a deputy U.S. marshal, known for his ace detective skills and bombastic style. (He often disguised himself in costume to fool felons and passed out silver dollars as a calling card.) Some have speculated that Reeves was the inspiration for the fictional Lone Ranger character.

Most people remain unaware of the black cowboy’s storied, and fundamentally patriotic, past. “When I moved to the East Coast, I was amazed that people had never heard of or didn’t know there were black cowboys,” photographer Ron Tarver said in an interview with The Duncan Banner. “It was a story I wanted to tell for a long time.”

In 2013 Tarver set out to document black cowboy culture, in part as a tribute to his grandfather, a cowboy in Oklahoma in the 1940s. “He worked on a ranch and drove cattle from near Braggs to Catoosa.” Another artist, Brad Trent, shot striking black-and-white portraits of members of the Federation of Black Cowboys in Queens, New York, an organization devoted to telling the true story of black cowboys’ heritage while providing educational opportunities for local youth to learn from the values and traditions of cowboy life.

Kesha Morse, the FBC president, described their mission as using “the uniqueness of horses as a way to reach inner-city children and expose them to more than what they are exposed to in their communities.”

Trent’s images capture how much has changed for black cowboys, who now dwell not only on the Western Front but on the city streets of New York and in rodeos held in state prisons. Yet certain values of cowboy culture remain intact. For Morse, it’s the importance of patience, kindness and tolerance.
