Ai Mi’s casting really doomed this drama.

I don’t mean from any moral police standpoint but from the point of it being good to watch.

This drama has the usual thin idol story and that’s fine. But it’s a costume idol romance with a thin story so it has to convey longing and yearning and desire even if it doesn’t convey lust the way eg Love in the Clouds did (LITC was paper thin but the insane sexual charge between the OTP carried the day hard.)

No, you can do it without kissing and make outs tho it’s harder (see One and Only or such dangai as The Untamed) but even there, where you have adult actors with adult life experience, you can convey emotional hot house of longing and an adult relationship.

Ai Mi is a literal child with a literal child lack of experience. And so it’s not just that they can’t have kissing and make-outs, they can’t and don’t convey any longing, yearning, desire, charge, passion or even enduring love.

And how can they? She’s at the age where you doodle names of your crush in a notebook. There may well be some actresses who can convey that sort of thing at 17 (there are plenty of teen moms around the world and stuff) but it’s not Ai Mi. She looks like a high schooler and comes across as a high schooler, because she is. She cannot convey anything but a high school crush and she’s not doing even that here.

And it’s exacerbated by the fact that HMH, beautiful as he is, is very much a man, he does not look in the least boyish (compare him to eg Win Win who to me looks like a kid and has that vibe.) And also, he cannot yearn at her, not the way a man yearns for a woman, whether because he’s uncomfortable or because he is smart enough to know the pitfall that would be.

So it just falls flat in vibe. They don’t have romantic moments when they should and when they try, it’s shudder inducing.

I mean:

Yeah, you are. You are looking at a literal child. I am getting the creeps.
