this will not leave my mind i fear 😔 universe where irina lives. maybe she gets close to the edge but something stops her. from then on ilyas dad sees how close a call it was so reluctantly allows her to get meds or something as long as it’s kept secret. so irina is there thru ilyas teen years and he knows how close it was to NOT having her so ilya and irina are super close. ilyas relationship w his bro is maybe better out of irinas interference maybe worse out of jealousy but either way ilyas got his mom in his corner. maybe she goes with him to boston when he’s drafted. (maybe she escapes her husband…). ilya is still whoring it up around boston but it’s less fleeting and constant for shallow companionship and more routine and fun but not all the time. he talks to his mom regularly and his dad and brother are assholes but it’s ok bc his mom is there with him. hockey is fun and he’s great at it, but it’s not the same level of desperation to escape from before. he’s still a great player but he’s having more fun playing and his style is less aggressive (although still aggressive!!! but in a more enjoyable and less angry way).

shane on the other hand is a level 10000 obsessor. i’m pretty sure in canon he goes to real high school and has some friends there and even dates a girl (badly). in this universe after yuna and david die he’s shunted off to life with a distant aunt or something and he drops out and does online school instead. he’s in the rink 24/7. he drops out of contact w people he knew and his aunt he’s living with makes sure he gets fed and gets his homework done but doesn’t do more than that. his parents left him some $ in their will so he can afford to keep up with hockey. from here he gives into his worst neuroses towards hockey because it’s all he has left and he knows how much his parents gave up for him to play hockey and how much they wanted NHL for him so he regards it like his Ultimate Mission In Life to respect his parents last wishes and be the Best Hockey Player Ever.

But this is obviously a lot for a person so maybe even before he meets Ilya- maybe with the person he knows on the US ice skating team- he tries gay sex. and he finds that it puts him out of his mind. like he’s constantly 24/7 thinking about hockey ao that he avoids thinking about his mom and dad so this lets him think about nothing at all. so shane has kind of a ilya type #slut arc, but quickly realizes he doesn’t get the same effect from women so only fucks men. this is when shane + ilya meet and everything i think would play out mostly the same except shane is more confident about gay sex and ilya is maybe less immediately dismissive about emotional implications beyond sex

i think in this universe with someone in his corner (and making sure that ilya isn’t being guilted into sending money back to fund his brothers coke habit) he’s such a Mamas boy that his image is still cheeky and womanizer and arrogant but maybe not as hard edged. he has things that soften him up to the public and his mom is more proactive about convincing Ilya to make good decisions so there’s less bad press and probably he does more ads and shit.

shane meanwhile does NOT have yuna “momager” hollander in his corner. his agent is fine but he is so focused on hockey that he doesn’t really care to do all the other stuff, like ads and all, unless his manager really insists. he gets a reputation for being REALLY intense. however also lowkey in this universe since shane is more of a #slut at some point he does get caught out for having a bunch of gay sex. he gets super anxious but since he’s so hockey brained and because his parents aren’t there to find out about it and because he really is just kind of isolated and has been for a while and doesn’t care abt his reputation as much, his main response is just “i don’t see what this has to do with hockey. irrelevant. now watch this shot.” which of course cements his reputation as hockey god slash chronic gay sex haver. but in this universe i think it bothers him less because he’s less concerned about his reputation overall and more concerned about pure hockey achievement.

Hey do y’all remember when Boeing fucking killed a guy last year. And we all said “huh I guess Boeing fucking killed a guy” and then went on with our lives. So for those who are, very understandably uninitiated on this story:

On 23 October last year (2024) the New York Times published an interview with former OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji who worked on organising and gathering data for OpenAI until 2022 when he begun thinking about the morality of it. He eventually came to the conclusion that what OpenAI is doing blatantly violates copyright law and decided to leave the company altogether in August 2024.

After he came out with this accusation he was set to appear in court to testify against OpenAI’s data-gathering practices, something which had the potential of being a complete disaster for the company and the generative AI industry as a whole.

That was until 26 November, just days before he was due to appear in court, when he suddenly and mysteriously was found dead inside his own apartment. Investigators concluded that the death was self-inflicted, something which his family has disputed.

There was also “sign of struggle in the bathroom and looks like someone hit him in the bathroom based on blood spots”, and his apartment showed signs of having been ransacked for evidence: “The pin drive is missing. His computer was messed up.”.

Overall it feels pretty clear-cut what happened, that is to say that OpenAI had him killed because he was a legitimate threat to their business, indicating that they are fully aware that the way they’re gathering data is completely illegal.
