As a long time ‘oats for breakfast’ advocate, I have recently discovered a way more nutritious breakfast in the form of spinach, fruit and chia seed smoothie. I took it post-workout and it felt and tasted great. I was full from breakfast until 1pm in fact. Thanks to this guy’s podcast and his 28 day smoothie challenge:

6 months of filming and editing, to finally see our series of mini-documentaries in Georgetown Festival, Penang. What a great feeling watching people watch your creations! Truly humbled by the opportunities that filming continues to give. Thanks immensely to co-producer, host and translator Welyne Jehom. Click link in bio to see some of the films. All footage shot on #sonya7sii and #sonya6300 in #slog with #zhiyuncrane and #dji #phantom3pro #filming #documentary #georgetown #georgetownfestival #penang #bts #textiles #puakumbu #storyfrontier #inspired #passion #weaving #borneo #cinematography #videographer #dslr #justgoshoot #a6300 #sonyimages #gtf2017 (at George Town, Malaysia)
Lunch: Yellow Dhal Coconut milk curry with black rice. The Rice and Dhal have a 9% protein content. Just take a bunch of veg and go experiment! (Other ingredients: Kailan, tamarind, coriander powder, turmeric, onions, garlic, ginger)
8 ringgit (£1.42) lunchtime Veggie winner at Tasty Bud, Sentul, KL, Malaysia. North Indian Set Menu.
Women of Myanmar. 2017 with Canon 60D and 50mm lens.
Nourish cafe, Yangon. Vegan food. Tasty Arabic mezze falafel style dish and bean burger. With some rum punch. Each dish was around 8-10,000kyat $7-8, which isn’t cheap for local prices. But worth it. Yoga studio attached next door. Only one in Yangon!

A bit of fun as I edit my 2017 reel this evening. Link in bio of tutorial on how I create the effects shown. (Pretty easily, as I've no patience for clever stuff!). Monkey totally owns human in Medan, Indonesia
“Banana Leaf” is actually the name of the above dish, which is an Indian dish found in Malaysia served on a banana leaf.
The rice, dhal, and little side dishes shown are accompanied by papadum, chutneys, dried chillis and a shot of special spicy soup to finish the meal. The idea is they keep topping up until you are full. It is simply the best comfort food. And utterly delicious. You can copy the locals and eat with your hands too. They will greatly appreciate your effort.
Kuala Lumpur, where this foreigner (me) has lived for a year, is full of competition for the best banana leaf.
The most famous are in an expat friendly neighborhood Bangsar. And include Devi’s Corner, Nirvana and the chain Raj’s banana leaf. However my favourite by far and lesser known is the one pictured, available at Balas Banana Leaf, Bangsar. It only costs around 8 Ringgit (£1.50) for all you can eat.
Lake Toba, Sumatra, Indonesia - Cheap getaway for a relaxing weekend on an island in the lake. But hassle getting there from KL (one of those: taxi, bus, flight, taxi, ferry days). Learn from my mistakes: (March 2017)
Go direct from Medan Airport with shared taxi. Just ask when you arrive. We went with Bagus Taxis. Cost per person 80,000 Rupiah (16,200=£1). Duration: 4-5 hours. Arrive in Parapat where frequent ferries take you to Island (30 mins duration) and drop you directly at your hotel. Cost 15,000 Rupiah.
My mistake was going via Medan city. From the airport I took an hour ride taxi to Medan city (100,000) and spent the night there, then took a 30 minute taxi (20,000) to Amplas bus station. Followed by an awful 5.5 hour public bus ride to Parapat. (40,000).The bus was very old, people smoked constantly and it stopped constantly.
Anyway, on to the lovely Samosir island. Which is a mainly Christian population. I stayed at Lek Jon Cottages. In a charming, simple and very large room with balcony overlooking the lake. (150-200,000/ night) inc. breakfast. I didn’t book ahead. Good food. Large beer 30,000.
People usually rent scooters, but I decided to walk to the local town tobah. Along the way I stopped at a little bakery with fresh chocolate croissants literally picked from the oven (3000 ea.) And ate meals like gado gado (20,000) which is vegetables with satay sauce on top. Avocados are everywhere and very cheap. I had at least 3 a day! Including avocado and fruit smoothies which are a must try. You can visit other local places, like 40km away is a hot springs (ask for “air panas”) in Pangururan.
But for me the best thing to do is just relax by the lake with a book and take occasional dips.
A little travel log. Canon 5D and 35mm lens. Shot ALL-I 24fps, cinestyle, magic lantern, handheld, edited on fcpx. Original song.
Testing out the Zhiyun Crane gimbal and an excuse to get lost in an abandoned railway station in Kuala Lumpur.
Wasn’t going to post this as it’s not very polished but sometimes it’s good to just go out and shoot stuff right?! Even if not a paid shoot. Especially if not a paid shoot. We’re more free to try out ideas and run with our imagination. Which in turn feeds into the paid stuff… (at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
Another shot from the short documentary pieces on a weaving community from Borneo.
Whilst the men don’t directly weave, they help with the tying of knots and making the women’s tools. Unfortunately, their surrounding land is now at threat from deforestation and resultant palm oil plantations. You can find out more by searching “rhgareh”. A few weeks ago I had the chance to film for some short documentary pieces on a weaving community from Borneo. They use the plants around them to make natural dyes for their traditional textiles. Forget fast-fashion, a garment here takes 2-3 months to make! Unfortunately, their surrounding land is now at threat from deforestation and resultant palm oil plantations. People always say how hard it must be for me to find vegetarian or vegan food in KL. I tell them it’s easy.
This is typical Malay food called: ‘Nasi Campur’, and is eaten all over Malaysia every day in open buffet style and costs only 5-7 RM. That’s £1 in England. And it’s delicious, with lots of raw ‘ulam’ leaves on the side and spicy ‘sambal’ sauce. If ever I have doubts about being in Malaysia, eating this food makes me feel at home even tho it’s nothing like what I’d ever eat back home… Malay food is some of the tastiest, healthiest and spiciest food I’ve eaten! So if you find yourself in Malaysia just show these photos to a local and for sure they will smile, say “aaaah” and point you to the nearest spot
Call this a life hack or call this the cheapest thing I’ve ever done.
Maybe you know “the thing” whereby your local super hipster cafe gives out “free used coffee grinds”.Which are for exfoliating or fertilizer or something. Anyway this morning I had run out of coffee and lazily decided to test out the used grinds in my caffettiere. And I tell you what, against all odds it was nearly the same taste and caffeine high. In fact, I added a lot more than I would usually because I thought it would taste so weak. But now here comes the weird part, I have never been so high on caffeine in my life as of right now. I’ve written a ton of emails and been to the gym. My new blender also just exploded for some reason. The date, oat and hemp protein shake, only partially pureed. And then I received a phone call which was an offer to illegally film illegal logging undercover for two days in the Borneo jungle. Basically a suicide pact. Quite a random morning.
