If you relate to Adam from The Raven Boys I fuck with you lets cry together oki
Knowledge of my own ethnicity is based off my parent’s “I think” statements. It was never a raging topic as I grew up, even having been part of a mixed family. I grew up with a blank slate toward my heretical geography, and it was never something that bothered me until recently. I acknowledge my …
An opinion article on ethnicity that I wrote for my school paper.
Yes, it is a very stupid and amateur video that I made for class. But yes, I am low key proud of the way it came out so enjoy if you wanna. Day in the life of a two-job working, double major.
Let me just start off by saying: you know it was a good movie when people clap and holler all throughout the film. It is near impossible to be bored while watching T’Challa, King of Wakanda strive to protect his land. Killmonger, the film’s main villain plays a key role for both plot, but also …
I am not super proud of it, but here it is all the same.
Satellite Review
I am a Gabbie Hanna fan through and through, I would like to state foremost.
Watching her evolve and take control of her life has been an inspiration to me. Her wardrobe, humor, and poetry book all hold a special place in my heart, as does her first song: Out Loud. It was well thought out with a gorgeous, haunting score; The music video messed with me in the best of ways, giving a whole new perspective on the song. With all this love, however, I want to be honest about my opinion of her new song: Satellite.
First off, her voice: beautiful. The rifts had me quaking, I swear. Opposing Out Loud, this tune seemed to be less glossed over on her vocals. The rawness allowed emotions to seep in, and captured me within the first few notes.
But with the strong bones of the song, I have to say the lyrics did not nearly amount to what I had come to expect of her with her poetry and previous song. My issue laid with the cliche associated with being a “satellite”. As a writer, I found myself flinching at each choras, wishing for a different descriptor. That being said, the overuse could have been used to her benefit had the song wholeheartedly embodied space or machine-like synonyms. This would present an impactful theme rather than a cliche. In the song, there were some associations with space in, what I viewed as, an attempt to accomplish just that:
“I’m surrounded by stars/ But they don’t hear me wishin’”
“Guess I gotta be content with, playing in the darkness”
“I can make it on my own, the falling star of a one-man show”
And at every one of these lines I was like “YES. GURL. GET. IT.” I loved them! The association and tie ins to one particular aspects had me jammin. I wanted to belt to the underlying theme of loneliness mixed in with space. But the uncertainty with the other lyrics left me pondering.
Save the few lines mentioned, and the word satelite, the rest of the song did not mix well in my ears with what Hanna seemed to be attempting.
“Its funny how a crowded room/ Can feel so damn alone”
“Been standing on the edge for way too long”
“I’m on the outside, looking in”
“I’m a satellite/ Unless you let me in”
“I’ve got so much to give, but I’m keeping it close”
“These days are slow but the night moves way too fast/ Need to know you want me here before I ask”
“Oh, but hide and seek is only fun if, if somebody’s looking”
“Maybe I should ask someone to play”
Now individually, these line are beautifully written, enjoyable, and full of meaning as I have found her writing to be in the past. Taken out of context of this song, they would make an impactful tune on their own. But mixed in with random mentions of space, the song felt like two pushed together: one of space and one of a gathering of people. With lines like these, the song felt unfinished and rushed; like they were fill ins until she could find the right synonyms.
Again, I love Gabbie Hanna and think that she is an amazing business woman and an inspiration to those with mental illness, going through weight loss, dealing with stress, striving to get into a creative field and so much more. But I think this song needed a little more time to grow, lyrics wise. The tune was lovely, and the lyrics were beautiful individually, but they did not seem to fit together correctly.
Perhaps I would love myself If you hadn’t changed who that was.

“Never buy me roses.” She spoke the request one moon kissed night. A star speckled sky hung above us as we leaned against the balcony. My sweater hung from her shoulders, falling just below her hips, the cream shouting against her skin. I felt myself become unsteady in heartbeat and soul while she sipped tea. “Why not roses?” “Because they’re liars.” Chin sitting on her shoulder, she looked at me through lashes and I tripped up inside, stumbling again. “The smell draws you in, the beauty pulls you close, the gentle brush of petals against your nose feels safe. So you reach down, ready to bring it into your life even if for a short time, and all you get is thorns. Leaving you lingering in the smell of flowers and blood, wondering if it was worth it.” Leaning in, I kissed her cheek- softer than any rose petal would be. “Never roses.” Her lips lifted slightly and she leaned against me. All my attention rushed into the contact- her head against my shoulder, her hair petting my neck, her eyes looking up at the stars again while mine could not be pulled from her. And then I fell- my last request spent hoping she wasn’t a rose.

I’ve been touched by fire. It tried to burn me and succeeded. Though it’s nothing to write home about The glow of a candle could achive it. The sun has yelled out Colby! And shot its shine at me. And it is with those beams of light That my skin aquired this red glean. Oh gosh I’m dehydrated And oh gosh I’m overheated Perhaps I should sip some water Fill a tub and sink on in it. I’ve been touched by heat Laying in wait for blisters to bloom I’ll close my eyes, release a groan By God it’s not even June.

It was warm. A heavy weight between my ribs. It settled like it belonged there, completing me. My face went from bland to subconsciously smiling, eyes filling up with something. It was a baby laying down in a crib. A husband dancing with his wife. A teenager head-banging, trying not to toss off headphones while no one was watching. A child stretching their arms to the wind- closing their eyes, knowing they were flying. It was reading a book- being pulled away from reality. It nestled into my bones while alone in my car, waking me to sense of belonging. It was warm, weighted. My heart knew it to be contentment.

I tried to love her, I really did. But it was like trying to love the rain with your hair straightened in a dress in high heels in the mud. It was like trying to love shoes when they didn’t fit quite right. It was like trying to love a tree when it was crushing you. It was like trying to love fire when it was burning down your home licking at your palms. It was like trying to love the ocean when you were hairline deep the waves pushing you under. I try to love her I really do.

I wonder why the sign is not repainted, then I remember where I am I wonder why eyes focus on the door, barely lingering on the trees hovering I wonder why autumn leaves cling to branches though they know this is the end I wonder why they changed so brightly, knowing it would kill them I wonder why the wind blows so hard at sunrise messing up hair and dresses I wonder why the wind is so tired half past noon, then remember its previous antics I wonder why the shoes lay abandoned, why don't they run away I wonder why the rusic bars on windows have not been changed, then I realize where I am
