Hey, you know what was a FANTASTIC scene in Fate? Archer’s battle with Saber and Shirou on Fuyuki Bridge in Hollow Ataraxia.
Shirou showing growth as a mage and as a fighter. He uses reinforcement on his eyes to enhance his vision and see as far as Archer can, quickly traces the swords Archer uses in order to discern their abilities, analyzes the layout of the area and moves to grounds more conducive to a counterattack, and perfectly times his own arrow (that is, Saber,) so that Archer cannot even think about dodging.
Archer finally (FINALLY!) getting to show off ONSCREEN just how powerful he truly is. No longer required to hold back his shots or fight in melee combat, he finally gets to do what an Archer is supposed to and snipe the hell out of Shirou and Saber. And snipe he does, the dude is strong enough to take Saber down (though leave her alive) in only 5 shots, making a 6th one to nail Shirou right between the eyes if Shirou doesn’t have access to his projection magic yet. He even shatters Rho Aias, something that took the motherfucking anti-army version of Gae Bolg to do.
Sword of Promised Victory and EMIYA being played back to back as the music for their fight. Fuck yea.
When Archer fires Hrunting, a sword he can redirect in midair with his aim, and Shirou responds by firing Saber at him, Shirou explicitly notes that he has no way of changing Saber’s trajectory, and it’s a simple matter of Archer using Hrunting to shoot her out of the sky and kill her. Saber however, manages to narrowly avoid Hrunting despite having no way of dodging it….. unless Archer himself curved it away from her in the last second. Mr. Counter “I don’t remember much of my former life” Guardian, who spent parts of Unlimited Blade Works accidentally letting slip that he knows things about Rin that he shouldn’t, also refuses to kill the knight that saved his life so long ago. Very subtle there Nasu.
This scene that plays out as Archer dies, defeated by Shirou’s cunning and a swipe from Saber.
“Even now he can’t make himself forget it”, as if he’s willingly attempted to forget all about his human life, but it was impossible to forget about her.
Saber going into shock at having killed someone who had once been her dear Shirou
Yeah sure Shirou, it was doing a giant leap that hurt her, not the part where she just watched adult you die at her own hands, his last thoughts being about the night Arturia Pendragon met Emiya Shirou.
Anyway please read Fate/Hollow Ataraxia if you haven’t yet it is truly a gift.
