traditionally 'masculine' men: i need a woman to make me dinner🥺 i can't do it myself because that's her place to do so and i'm just too manly 🥺 she needs to be nurturing like my mommy🥺 also her asking for any material possession in return for her services is so rude of her weeeeeeh😭 doesn't she know she's my mommy???😭😭😭
"Progressive" women: Gender roles are bad and sexist...but only when theyre against us. You pay the bills. You change the tires. You fix the appliances. You defend me from danger. You do the dangerous and gross jobs. You fight in wars. Be a man! Umm😜 actually, asking me to cook or clean even once👏👏 is misogynistic. I shouldnt be pressured to do things associated with my gender.👏👏👏 The only one who is allowed to demand gender roles😄Is me❤️Now one-sidedly protect me and fund my life like a parent, rather than treat me like a partner.😤 #genderequality
It also comes from a gross misunderstanding of how and why those gender roles even happened.
Before the industrial revolution and the information age nearly every job was backbreaking outdoor hard labor.
It wasn't as framed above "being a mommy", it was maintaining your workhorse. You kept it fed, you kept it healthy, you made sure it could keep working. Because it didn't work 5 eight hour days a week. It worked 15 to 20 hours a day, every day.
His job was to grind his body into paste providing the family. In many parts of the world it is still this way.
Her job was to manage the home, children, and finances.
But you're right, they want to keep his gender role as a provider, but they don't want to maintain the workhorse anymore.
