Final Project:

For my final project I decided to create a painting based on the lessons cubism and impressionism. The background filled with shapes and squiggles with bold colors (specifically, St. Bonaventure colors) are inspired by cubism. The four people, painted with flowing strokes and slightly unfinished, "nothing more than an incomplete sketch" to quote Monet, are inspired by the impressionism movement. This painting encapsulates the St. Bonaventure experience that I had with 3 of my best friends. To create this painting I used a canvas and paint!

This painting was inspired by a photo taken of the four of us last weekend, celebrating my last bonaventure weekend. From left to right is Gracen, Cameron, Nolan and myself. I have known these three for the majority of my life and was lucky enough to enjoy college with them. Gracen and Cameron have been two of my best friends for as long as I can remember and Nolan is my wonderful boyfriend. All of us went to high school together and decided to be bonnies together as well! As I am the only one graduating this year, I am feeling extra sentimental. So, I created this painting to remember our time here together. I know that these will be my lifelong friends and I will be honored to hang this in my home one day.

Surrealism

For my Surrealism project, I made a Pizza Purse. I used an Amazon package as the base. We have reached the point in the year where my roommates and I keep resulting to frozen pizzas for dinner. Therefore, we had many pizza boxes in our recycling. I up-cycled these boxes and added them to my purse as decoration. One side was our favorite margarita pizza, and the other is our favorite thin and crispy crust. Finally, I had a bunch of scrap fabric left over from another project I have made. I tied those together to make the straps. My roommate modeled my purse and showed how it can hold items, such as her kindle!

This is my puppet and her name is Genevieve. Genevieve likes to dance and have fun all the time hence her flowy skirt that moves as she grooves!

I constructed my puppet out of a toilet paper roll for the base. Then, I used colored paper to add her clothes, hair, hat, and arms. I attached these all with glue. I added string to the arms and hat to make her able to move her arms and so that she could fly without her arms being ripped off. Genevieve is now lovingly displayed in my room.

ARTH 102- Surrealism

For this week's assignment, I decided to make a purse out of left-over gift-wrapping materials I was going to throw out. The purse itself is made out of tape and colorful index cards. The strap of the purse is tape and gold pipe cleaners. I thought the frayed index cards I made looked like a piñata, so I continued to add to the piñata theme by filling the purse with candy and adding dum-dum key chains with a ribbon bow.

My wonderful model Cam showed off the function of the crossbody piñata purse by pulling out a piece of candy!

For my surrealism project I created a purse with some lanyards that were laying around and a McDonalds fry box that my sister walked in the door with as I was brainstorming! Perfect timing!

My model here is my friend, Cameron! He was very excited to model this lovely bag! Inside there was a perfume that he sprayed at me.

Agricultural Technology, also known as agtech, is advancing global water sustainability by improving irrigation, water-efficient crops, and better agricultural water management. Arable has created a crop-intelligence system that gives farmers precise data on plant and irrigation needs that allow for efficient water use and conservation. This technology allows for a green earth full of agriculture and water to be sustainable for generations to come.

This is why I chose to use bright blues and greens for my piece. I decided to put two squiggly blue "rivers" down the page to symbolize the water that will be preserved. The green was to symbolize the grass and plants that will be able to grow because of this new technology. Though I could not technically draw the technology because it is computer based, sort of like an LLM from my understanding, I chose to draw the outcomes of the technology instead: a clean, green earth. I used phrases that I felt went with the vibes of the piece and the technology. I also included a watering can and put the phrase "Beauty on Earth" coming out of it. This symbolizes this water focused technology producing beauty on earth!

For this Cubism assignment, I decided to sit down & draw different shapes with each color marker. With circles, squares, triangles, zig zags, and some random shapes I made my background. I then cut out some lace pieces from a magazine and centered them with some circles I drew to make an abstract type face.

Cubism! This project was extremely fun! I loved doing the background because it was so care-free!

For my Fauvism portrait I painted my beautiful friend Molly! Molly is one of the kindest, most loving, funny, and all around wonderful people I have ever known. I chose to use colors I associate with the sky for most of this painting because I think the sky is one of the most beautiful and perfect things in the universe which is exactly how I view Molly.

I decided to use yellow for the majority of her skin tone because Molly radiates a positive glow that makes those around her feel happier, much like the sun. For her hair, I used brown to signify her love for St. Bonaventure. I do not think anyone loves it here more than Molly does. I chose to make her freckles, eyes, and lips purple because of her fun spirit that I think matches the purple vibe. The blue background reminds me of a beautiful summer day which encapsulates everything Molly is. The smile everyone has around Molly is equivalent to the smile brought by a sunny day.

I am so glad that I have gotten to know Molly during my time at St. Bonaventure. She is truly one of my most favorite people in the world.

The dance moment I decided to draw is a moment from Maddie Ziegler's solo entitled "Cry" that was performed on an episode of Dance Moms. This dance is referenced often throughout the series and is even done multiple times. It is often regarded as Maddie's best solo. This dance and this show will always hold a special place in my heart. I have watched it several times over with my sisters and my best friends. We would all gather on my couch together when we were young with snacks and giggle and chat while watching dance moms. Still to this day, I gather with the same girls, in the same living room, on the same couch, to watch this same show. As ridiculous as the plot is, I will always have a strong love for Dance Moms.

As for this specific dance, my friends and I in our younger years thought it would be a great idea to learn the solo ourselves. Between fits of laughter and horrific technique we produced some version of this dance in an epic performance for my parents. In the process, we watched Maddie perform this dance probably hundreds of times. For this reason, I will never forget this dance. To this day, all of us still remember bits and pieces of the dance. I specifically remember the part in my drawing, which is why I chose to draw that specific part.

For this drawing, I used watercolor pencils for the background and floor to add a little bit of color to the piece. For Maddie, I used a charcoal pencil to allow for more motion. I added lines of motion around the arms and legs where her last movements would have been.

I chose to create an art piece based on accusations that Aubrey O'Day was photoshopping herself into other people's vacation photos. I found these photos to be extremely goofy looking because of how unreal they appeared. Still, O'Day claimed they were completely real. This is what started my emotional reaction to this image. I find this sort of lying to be very problematic on social media. It is photos like these that reveal the negative side of social media that regularly impacts mental health.

The posts made by celebrities set a standard that others feel they need to meet. This sparks people to want to buy things, go to places, and do things to be like the celebrities we see on social media. Yet, this standard is often based completely on lies. This can cause mental health issues because it causes people to yearn for something that is unachievable. For example in this photo, O'Day is signaling that she is on a glamorous expensive vacation. Average people then wish they could be on a vacation like her, yet she is not even on one to begin with.

I think that as a society we will get sick of photo editing. I believe we are already starting to see this with apps like "BeReal" that encourage people to post spontaneously without posing or editing. As of late, I notice regular people editing their photos less and posting more everyday content. Though I do not think we will ever be fully moved away from photo editing, I think (and hope) that we are becoming more aware of it, which will decrease the negative impacts on mental health.

When I first say the original post I knew I wanted to create a painting and add in a magazine clipping as O'Day. I began with a canvas and painted a background that was very clearly a painting. I made sure to not add too much detail as I did not want it to seem realistic; this way the background better contrasted with the added magazine clipping. I then added in an image of a lady that does not fit the background at all due to her clothing and obviously different texture.

I decided at the last minute to include a mask over the face of the lady. To me, this mask symbolizes the falsehoods that celebrities like O'Day hide behind when they make posts like this. Additionally, I chose to take the picture of my canvas in the sunlight which is symbolic of shedding light on the issue of photo editing. The lighting also helped to highlight that the lady does not belong on the canvas. I chose also to only glue her down slightly so that her edges could still be seen lifting from the canvas as another signal that she is not where she belongs.

I was inspired this week by pieces from Molly and Carolyn. I found that both of them have very free vibes about their artwork. Both have very free flowing lines that are somehow still uniform. This gives a very freeing vibe, almost like a breathe of fresh air. If their artwork were a season it would be spring. From Molly's piece, I specifically took the color purple and the little stars she has in the top right corner. From there, I took inspiration from Carolyn's flowing lines in her background. I made flowing swirls with my water color pencils and added the stars on top of it. With the pieces I cut out, aside from the lady, I allowed the lines to be wavy and not perfect. I found that this better encapsulated the free aesthetics of the pieces I took my inspiration from.

"Folklore" by Taylor Swift is an album that changed Taylor as an artist. Rather than her classic pop or country, this album focuses more on story and lyrics in a much slower pace. My favorite song from this album is "betty." Which tells the story about a high school couple that cheated on each other during a so called "summer fling." James, the name of the character who cheated on Betty is regretting his decisions. When reflecting about this album cover, I think the timing and context is important. Taylor wrote this album during COVID, where she was isolated and distant (like everyone else in the world). In her other album covers before this, there is a silhouette close up of Taylor's face, where this one she is much farther back. I believe this is because she was telling her own stories in her other albums, where in Folklore she experimented with telling the stories of characters that she imagined. With my interpretation, I added a magazine clipping of a lake into the forest, because of the ending track of the album "the lakes." I also turned the detailed image of Taylor facing front, so a silhouette of a girl facing backwards. This girl could be interpreted as Taylor, but could also represent Betty. I added the names of the songs in the album to the cover because while this girl journeys through the forest, she will encounter the songs in this album. By having her face backward, she is reflecting on the stories and looking towards the next albums Taylor is creating. I used colored pencils, and multipled types of markers to attempt shadowing and texture.

ARTH 102- Viewing Art

For this assignment, I decided to choose the album Flight of the Aeronaut by Vian Izak. I really enjoy indie pop music, and I came across this artist randomly thanks to Spotify. I loved the way this album brought a sense of flight, flying through the motions of life.

I really liked the Earthy, cool tones in the album's cover as well as the frame that is around the plane and children. For my adaptation of the album cover, I stuck with the same Earthy colors and brought in my own version of a frame. When I think of moving through life, I think of people scrapbooking so one day they can look back at life's adventure. I made my art a scrapbook of my favorite elements of the cover. I enjoy simplified art so rather than having a plane to represent the flying/navigating life, I drew a simple bird with one line. I also incorporated the children into my art with also only one line, signifying you only have one chance to navigate this wild adventure of life.

For this weeks piece I used the complementary colors of blue and orange for the background. I created an array of patterns and shapes to make a fun and vibrant display. For my fashionista, I made a skirt out of a funky patterned guitar. I paired my skirt with a cute little top that I thought went well with it. I then threw in a little belt to tie it all together. For the arms/ sleeves I used a nail polish ad. I threw on the purse with the hand included because I thought it was fun and silly. I found the face in a painting in the magazine which I thought was perfect because it was orange. Finally, my favorite part is the printed hat that matched the guitar skirt so well!!!

I took inspiration from Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Department album cover. I loved the centered image of her surrounded by the layered squares all in black and white. I was mostly inspired by the color scheme and the overall vibes of the album. In my piece, I disrupted the simplicity of the album cover by adding the square element to the background using a metallic colored pencil(aka my new art supplies). This made my piece much more chaotic than the album cover which I feel captures the essence of the album. I then added some sophisticated black and white pieces around the edges of the page to keep the middle open as it is on the album cover. Finally, I wanted to add a lady in the middle as Miss Swift is, so I found one wearing an outfit that perfectly matched the vibe. To finish it off, I added the word "tortured" above the headless lady in place of the full album title because it sums up the emotion of the piece as well as the album.
