To the well-meaning neutral/multi-shippers who are kindly lending their input to the zutara tag:

Here are some opinions that are not "problematic" or "toxic":

Zuko and Katara were set up to and should have been canon in the original series.

Aang's (and kataang's by extension) writing suffers from early 2000s incel/nice-guy influences.

Aang and Katara did not have romantic chemistry.

Zuko and Mai did not have romantic chemistry.

Zuko and Katara did have romantic chemistry.

Aang is an annoying character who does not have a satisfying arc.

Mai is an annoying character who does not have a satisfying arc.

Katara should have become an ambassador/queen and moved to the Fire Nation long-term.

Katara likes wearing red.

Zuko is a more interesting and well-written character than Aang.

Aang was a bad or abusive father, boyfriend, husband, friend etc.

Harassment of the largely female fanbase for zutara was perpetuated and encouraged by the shows creators.

These are all just opinions, not everybody is going to agree with all of these, and nobody is going to force anyone to do so.

Also not "problematic" or "toxic":

Liking Zuko and using Katara as a self-insert.

Liking Katara and using Zuko as a self-insert.

Shipping zutara because of aesthetics (they're both hot, red/blue, fire/water etc.)

Headcanons/fanfic where Katara cheats on Aang with Zuko or Zuko cheats on Mai with Katara.

The characters in Avatar are not real people. They are animations given words to say and things to do by a group of predominantly white, American, male writers. In the new movie, Katara could turn around and say 'i think we should start hunting small children for sport.' and it would be just as canon as anything Uncle Iroh has ever said.

More importantly, anybody who is anti-kataang (or anti-aang or anti-maiko or anti-sukka or anti-pakku or anti-katara) is criticising a 20 year old show that made lots of money and is watched and adored by millions all over the world. Anyone who is anti-zutara (or anti-zukka, or anti-jetko, or anti-tyzula) is criticising a small group of fans and fan works with zero creative control over the piece of media they enjoy. They are the ones punching down. There is no 'two sides' way to put it.

I'm not insecure enough that I'd feel threaten by people's opposing opinion on ships. I'm not blocking you for that. On the contrary, I don't mind having Zutara vs. Kataang debates, I'd like to see what you see in Kataang (I still haven't find anything convincing to me though).

However if you cannot keep the discussion somewhat friendly without attacking, disrespecting and assuming things about me and my fellow Zutara shippers for the sole crime of shipping Zuko and Katara and thinking Aang is a flawed character romantically incompatible with Katara, I will block you. I don't have time for your self-important shit.

It’s so difficult to keep writing about something you love only for it to get such little engagements. Sometimes we wanna give up.

So please, whatever kind of feedback you have on an author’s work—even if it’s constructive (“this could’ve been executed better”), or even if it’s “oh, will we get to see more of ____?”, even if it’s random keyboard smashes under a guest/anonymous account.

Honestly feels so good to get response on work, writing fanfics can be a bit lonely at times weirdly, (characters can’t talk back of their own volition unfortunately 😭), love to absolutely nerd out over my fics with anyone to just be ENTHUSIASTIC together and feel like all the work is having a positive impact on people. Love to share my passions, it’s what makes it all worth it! ❤️

I do not understand what kind of Trump card Bryke was thinking when they said “All Zutara shippers are doomed to have abusive relationships.”

Another thing that's funny is the attempt to paint Zuko attacking Aang in Sozin's Comet as traumatic for the gaang (even though they didn't see it that way) because earlier than that Zuko makes a tentative joke about chasing them around like old times and they all laugh (except Katara) and Zuko himself is treading carefully because he's unsure if it's too soon. So this idea that Zuko is somehow being insensitive is just...wrong.

Even Katara, who is upset by the joke and who does yell at Zuko initially before listening to what Zuko has to say, is the one to bring him back into the group hug after that scene and reassure him that he is part of their team.

And that's it, isn't it? These attempts to distance Zuko from the gaang and insist that he actually isn't redeemed enough mostly just exist because they're afraid he'll steal Katara away from Aang.

So I guess its confirmed? Katara was originally gonna be pregnant in the Legend of Aang movie. And that means (if the script was the same) that Aang inadvertently would've killed his pregnant wife. 🫠

Hakoda's first introduction to Zuko was his son who he loves and respects vouching for him about how much he'd proven himself and how integral he was to breaking into the Boiling Rock for the sole purpose of breaking Hakoda out of prison, Hakoda then witnesses Zuko putting his life on the line numerous times for them all, saving Sokka's life, bringing him home to his kids, then throwing himself straight at danger again so the rest of them can escape, and then after getting separated from them he'd find out that not only did Zuko take Katara to face her mother's/his wife's murderer to mete out whatever justice she saw fit, but that he also sacrificed himself for her and chose her life over his own. He saved Hakoda's baby girl's life!!!! His little girl who he knows he gave abandonment issues to and feels terrible about it!!! He'd love the idea of them together because he'd have such faith in Zuko to take care of her and treat her heart tenderly and to never abandon her. He'd love having Zuko as a son-in-law, the faith he'd have for him to be an amazing husband and father would be astronomical. That is the man his little girl deserves!!!!

the first fucking concept art they displayed of katara shows her pregnant. 🤢 and once again, i'm correct, the most important part of katara's design to them is her stupid fucking leather belt that we now know acts as a prengnancy band (that she has to wear even when she's not pregnant)?
