Little announcement, all! Nevermore will be going on a short summer break. Flynn and I have made the controversial decision to go outside and see the sun. But never fear, I'll burn immediately, remember why I don't go out there, and then we'll be set 'til next summer! Keep an eye on our socials for an official return date, but it should be in time for September. Which is good because September is basically spooky season, basically. The one thing I love about nevermore is that there not even one character I hate/despite.

Lenore? An icon, a legend. The moment.

Annabel lee? She's the woman. She's my love.

Duke? My boy, my man.

Pluto? Also my boy, also my man.

Ada? She's me, but with woman.i love her

Morella? MY LOOOOVE. KISSES AND HUGS.

Berenice? Slay. SLAAAAAAY.

Eulalie? Fucking kiss her in the cheeks.

Every character has their own personality and story, they all do good and bad things, and the design is NEAT. None of them is perfect and THAT'S fine. And also, I love how they take the consequenzes of they're own actions.

What time period do you think Prospero is from?

As it turns out we actually have quite a lot of details about Prospero's culture and period of life. More than I expected, considering just one full-fledged flashback (in case you're wondering why I spent so much time on this analysis). Long story short - I would say 1900-1910.

To talk in more detail, first I'll focus on what we know from the main timeline. As I mentioned earlier I'm of the opinion that the entire main cast hails from the 20th century. However there is a problem with Prospero: jabot is in his nevermore uniform. He calls it a cravat but like. it's clearly a jabot.

Unlike a cravat a jabot is a rather old–fashioned accessory which mostly disappeared from the men's wardrobe by the middle of the 19th century. Prospero may look like the most fashion conservative person but cmon not that much. Earlier someone pointed out to me that we don't necessarily have to judge students' lifetime based on their school uniforms (i mean women of the Lenore class didn't wear trousers in that era, Annabel clearly did not wear skirts above her knees during her lifetime and the origin of the bolo tie worn by Monty in the first season gives me a headache). I do not rule out that RnF designed academie uniforms based more on vibes than on the time period fashion.

For the last meal Prospero chooses cannoli and espresso. Espresso as a method of making coffee in a more or less traditional form was patented in 1884  (although the coffee machine version of that time was apparently very uh. rough draft i would say. most sources will tell you that espresso was popularized in the 1900). The term espresso itself is also found in various sources of the first decade of the 20th century.

Now I will study his flashback frame by frame and line by line.

The disease he talks about in the flashbacks is most likely tuberculosis. At least the symptoms of hemoptysis coincide. Besides tuberculosis was treated for a long time in sanatoriums, where as mentioned Prospero worked.

The tuberculosis vaccine was invented in 1921, but it became widespread much later. The first most effective antibiotic was found in 1944. Prospero however claims that there is no cure, so the flashback obviously takes place much earlier, probably even before the invention of the vaccine.

Before the invention of drug treatment, tuberculosis was treated, among other things, with surgical intervention: pneumothorax, pneumonolysis or even removal of a part of the lung. Do you know what tuberculosis surgery reminded me of? Prospero`s hallucinations.

but im just saying. we digress.

So we know that Prospero and his family are Sicilian immigrants. Apparently emigration from Italy to the United States was most active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and later Sicilian immigration was greatly hampered by WWI and the U.S. Immigration Act of 1924. According to Prospero`s cousin, many in their family did not attend school which corresponds to the low level of education among the Sicilian immigrants of the first wave: given the neglect and discrimination towards them, they simply did not trust the American education system and were not eager to adapt among people who despised them.

As for dago slur, it was used against people of italian/hispanic origin in 1900 (more or less).

Aaaand let's finish the same way we started – fashion. In his flashback Prospero is wearing a cape coat, possibly an Ulster but not necessarily. From what I've found capes for men's coats gradually went out of style during the Edwardian era.

The same goes for his tie. I have no idea if it has a specific name but the bottom line is that it's a relic of the Victorian, or at best the Edwardian era. In the 1920s the Langford tie was invented, the one that we know as a normal modern tie. It actually pushed older fancy neckwears from the market, including that kind of large bow ties over the collar.

Anyway yeah rip Prospero you would have loved BCG vaccine.

Nevermore Reread 🐦‍⬛ Episode 1

Nevermore has consumed me yet again, and with the plot of S2 thickening, I’m realizing I don’t remember all the details of S1 as well as I thought I did.

So it’s time for a reread!

As I go, I’m going to be pointing out all the little things I notice a second time through! (I’m sure they will all be things people have noticed before, but it will be fun for me so idc 😂)

Without further ado… EPISODE 1

Hey look! The beacon! I literally didn’t even notice that the first time I read this, but there it is, from the very beginning.

It always amazes me how good RnF are at foreshadowing!

Mr. Raven! And he has skulls in his eyes! So cool! I do think I noticed that the first time round, if I remember correctly. But every time he appears I’m like oooh skull eyes!

The difference in art style is so cool! I love both this style and the evolved one! They are both gorgeous! I love the creepy, wispy, almost hollow, desaturated vibe of the original, and I love the detailed, still creepy, gorgeously rendered style of the new!

It’s crazy to see them side by side though! Like, it evolved so slowly I didn’t even notice!

But regardless of style, the art in Nevermore and Shiloh gives me life! It’s 🤌 absolutely stunning!

The orbs! This part is so much creepier knowing these are the remains of the souls students who didn’t make it through Nevermore.

Clearly the orbs have some amount of sentience which is really interesting to consider.

The Stag!! It’s so creepy! I love it!

Kinda glad it doesn’t have those long, finger claws in the redesign though because they are horrifying lol

RnF sure know how to design that nightmare fuel!

Sentience and the ability to scare The Stag away. What secrets do you hold, orbs?

There is definitely something more to them than meets the eye.

Wtf is that supposed to mean? Lenore, who are you? Why are you so special and what do the orbs know about it?

‼️Spoilers for S2:

Is it the curse? Or the fact that Theo was here before? Is there some sort of prophecy?

And the fact that in S2 the stag seems to be after Lenore specifically - she must pose some sort of threat to the in between world.

Or maybe it doesn’t want to kill her? Maybe it needs her for something.

At any rate, Lenore is significant and I’m so curious to see what secrets she, the Deans, and Nevermore are hiding!

Did Lenore get shot in the head?? That’s my prediction.

It is interesting though that most of the blood seems to be on the front of her with less on the back + the arm behind her.

From what limited knowledge I have of bullet wounds, this makes me wonder if she got shot from behind. Since exit wounds tend to be larger and bleed more than entrance wounds. It would also fit the betrayal theme theory.

And with that ends the first post of the reread!

I noticed so many new things this time through that I hadn’t picked up on the first time I read it. I’m very excited to see what else I find in the rest of the episodes!

A few notes on why I arranged the characters this way:

Morella – a girl who literally died protecting someone, but no one protected her — at least not anyone from Annabel's team.

Pluto – I’m sure he has trauma rooted in toxic masculinity instilled by his father. His dad literally told him to "be a man," and Montresor mocked him for being a coward.

Will – Always the artist, never the muse — he always loves, but is never loved in return.

Lenore – even though she has everything now, she could lose it all in a blink.

Annabel – she’s perfect, a literal angel. But a completely powerless and miserable one, with no say over her own fate — in life or after death.

Ada – my girl might’ve been a bit clingy, but she fell in love genuinely and just wanted to be loved back.

Eulalie – she hoped to chase her dreams together with her friends, but they gave up on that without hesitation.

Prospero – in life, he rose from an ordinary Italian family to become a respected doctor. But his family turned their backs on him, and he grew afraid of physical touch. That’s why he’s always an angel — but never a god.

Ada – she loved Thomas when she was alive, but he never would’ve chosen her.

Duke – he believed in his luck and skill, but died because of his assistant’s betrayal.

Montresor – his mother called him a sinner, which is what he eventually became. But in their religious community, even the smallest misstep could be seen as sin. So maybe Monty was branded a "sinner" from the very beginning.

Berenice – I placed her here because we know so little about our girl, and I’m waiting for the day she finally takes center stage.

He is so delightfully awful! Like my guy cannot make a good decision to save his life!!

And he is such a brilliant foil for Lenore! They are complete and total opposites, and everything about him pisses her off and vice versa. Yet they both have such high charisma that they can almost respect each other for it.

He was the perfect S1 villain and I am so pumped to see where the rest of his arc goes from here!
