I love crows so damn much. When I was fifteen, I hit a pretty serious bout of depression, to the point I was in my room for months. Well, a family of crows made a nest in a tree outside my window. There were two parents and two chicks. One chick was healthy and strong. One was weak, and had a caw like something being strained. It sounded more like a rooster crowing and so my parents jokingly named him ‘Buck’.Well… months passed and Buck’s sibling was taught to fly. His parents focused on the sibling because the sibling was strong. The father stayed behind to try and teach Buck, but I saw him try to fly, fail, and crash to the floor. His father helped him back up into the tree.

Every day, I would watch Buck from my window until one day I opened it and started talking to him. He was small and gangly and he couldn’t caw right. His feathers were all over the place and I felt a kinship. So I made a deal with him. I told him that if he could do it, if he could fly, then I could find the strength to get up. Well… near the end of the season, after talking with him every day, I finally saw him get out of the nest. He went to the edge of his branch, braced himself, and jumped… and just before he hit the ground, he soared back up into the sky. I cheered harder than I ever had before.

That winter, Buck left the area. I was crestfallen. I felt like I’d lost a friend. But I was so damn proud of him.

Cut to the next spring? I’m walking up the driveway one day when suddenly I hear a sound… a broken caw. I look up, and Buck is sitting in a tree above my head. He stared at me and puffed his feathers, then hopped down in front of me and cawed again. I was so damn thrilled, and I told him how proud I was of him. He ruffled his feathers and then soared off into his old tree.

That summer? I heard two broken caws. One from Buck… and one from his chick.

Cut to ten years later? We have a family of crows who all have a very distinct caw and they come here and spend every spring, summer, and fall on our property. Buck still greets me every spring.

this one morning i kept hearing really loud caws, i remember it was like 5am, LIKE REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGGRESSIVE, so loud that i could hear it through a closed window, and i eventually went outside to check it out. there was a crow on my front lawn, it had an injury on its head and couldn’t fly and there were two other crows circling right above it, and they were cawing like mad.

i tried to get close and take a better look and one of them dived super low and tried to attack me. so i went back in the house and chopped some sliced raw meat and tossed it at him from a distance.

a few more times later, very soon after, they could tell i was trying to help, and did not attack me. i was “allowed” to walk up close and pick him up, he couldn’t drink water properly so i had to dip my finger in a bowl and stick it in his mouth.

i did this few times a day and it went on for about a week before he disappeared, i thought he recovered and left, but he came back the next day and lands on me, and i see him around the block quite often, and he would come sit on my shoulder for a few minutes and then fly away again. i feel like i’ve adopted a son.

Like, I wouldn’t want to be on bad terms with a crow, but they are a really smart animal, they aren’t scary You just want to be nice to them because they will know and they will remember, and they will pay you back if you treat them a certain way.

As a side note, I volunteered at a rehab (Hope for Wildlife), where they were rehabbing a crow with a broken wing–who was named Russell Crow. He kept pulling his bandage off so a sleeve was cut off some old clothing and put on him like a little sweater.

I had to put my phone down and contemplate my entire existence due to second-hand embarrassment.

It really is cringey. Like how tf do they justify a woman fully knowing a mass murderer was around but still let a child out but bark mad about a toad being tested for magic (just like pets in any other magic classes like Transfiguration) by a person with an antidote nearby. I am a huge animal lover but the “toad over human rights” mentality of Snaters is something I would never be able to swallow

It really is. I’ll never understand those dunderheads. Let’s put aside the fact that animal cruelty is totally normal eat Hogwarts; animals are regularly experimented on, McGonagall literally made 13 year olds vanish (= kill) kittens, yet Snaters still ramble on about Snape MuRdErInG Neville’s toad, the dude didn’t even poison Trevor (only threatened to do so), let alone kill. -_-

I too am a huge animal lover, but I still will never understand why the fuck Snaters can’t MOVE ON FROM THAT FUCKING INCIDENT. Tbh, I want someone to care about me the same way Snaters care about Trevor.

Like honestly imagine if Scabbers wasn’t a serial killer but just a normal rat, how would they all react to McGonagall letting a child with a broken wand test magic on it? THINGS SNATERS REMEMBER ABOUT SNAPE-

Now I love both of my (scumbags) babies equally, but to this day I don’t understand for the life of me how the same act performed by Draco Malfoy and James Potter are perceived as the former being a coward and the latter being courageous.

After Harry Potter insulted Draco's mother to his face and turned his back immediately after Draco launched a hex that missed. In retaliation to this a Professor, imposter or not he was an adult with authority, transfigured and beat Draco to the ground multiple times to the endless amusement of his peers. The reasoning here being that to hex someone from behind their back was shameful and cowardly. Draco as a character was then portrayed by characters, fans and the movies as a shameless coward.

YET. James Potter who is fondly remembered by all (but Snape) for his courage and heroics, did arguably much worse.

Where at least it can be said that Harry should have seen the hex coming as he had provoked Draco himself, Snape was minding his damn business and didn't have James anywhere in his peripheral.

While hexing Harry from behind his back was a complete one off for Malfoy, Severus immediately turning around with wand in hand and alerted as soon as his name is called out from behind him clearly suggest these attacks are not out of the ordinary if not occurring regularly.

Furthermore, Draco was doing it by himself. Even with his posse behind him Harry barely registers them, cause there is no threat of any of them stepping in. Even if they did Harry had two skilled wizards and the Hogwarts faculty behind him at the very least.

Whereas Snape was caught by himself, and expected to fight off at least 2 more people if he did manage to land an attack James. The moment Lily draws her wand and threatens to step in, which still wouldn't have evened out the numbers, James relents.

Not to mention, Harry was up in his face just a second ago and Draco didn't miss a beat after Harry turned his back, and yet the hex somehow misses? Are we to believe that Draco's aim was so incredibly shit that he couldn't hit Harry from behind from thát close? It couldn't have been (fake) Moody cause Harry would've heard something and why the heck parry it slightly to Harry's side instead of putting up a shield. And I'm about to get angry cause WHY IS A GROWN A** adult causing bodily harm and publicly humiliating a child over something that more than likely was a warning or challenging shot!? Even if it's Malfoy, idc!

Continuing. My point is, the first hex was an invitation that purposely didn't land or cause harm. Harry was given the opportunity to accept the challenge or look like a little b*** with nothing but mouth by refusing, but the choice was his.

The first hex James throws is a disarming spell followed by a binding charm after which he is choked by soap. Rendering him unable to magically, physically or even verbally do anything to fight back his assailants.

Then followed by levicorpus so on top of being unarmed, bound and coughing up soap, Snape now has blood rushing to his head and his organs pressing down on his lungs making it even harder to formulate thought and even breathe.

There was zero intent to allow Snape any glimmer of a pinprick of a chance to defend himself, let alone fight back. This was never leading up to a duel, but outright assault.

On top of all this while in Draco's case he is punished, and honestly he deserved something though not all thát, James is not. Instead the only one punished is Snape for saying a slur, washing away every act before and after the fact. The most James got was a light berating from Lily, with at least one prefect there at the scene.

The hypocrisy is overwhelming. Any act by a Gryffindor is painted as heroic while the same act by a Slytherin is demonized and shamed.

I say all this to say... idk exactly but noone talks about this and I needed it to be said. Draco didn't deserve all thát, and James ain't shit for what he did to Snape. Also Harry is a hypocrite and I'm over him keekeeing and supporting bullying/abuse as long as his friends are the perpetrators (Slytherins, Kreacher, Marietta and Fleur off the top of my head).

What’s upsetting is that the fandom is literally Harry but worse. There is a bunch of pics comparing James and Draco but people are still gonna say “He isn’t racist so he is much better”. Yeah, imagine saying a sexual assaulter is a good, innocent person because he doesn’t use slurs.

Dear Snaters, did you forget these facts when you come up with that claim:

1. Harry Potter being the primary target of Voldemort, which meant Voldy Moldy would kill him under any circumstances (which mean asking for Harry’s life is an impossible feat)

2. Voldemort agreeing to spare Lily only because he bought that Snape had lust for her (which mean what kind of reasons he had to explain why he wanted to save Jimminy to the Dark Lord)

3. His immediate response afterwards “Hide them all, i beg you” and the fact that he straight out claim he would do anything in exchange for Dumbledore’s protection of the Potters. Anything.

Mind you, Mr Porker bullied Sev for 7 years straight. Feel free to call me a heartless monster but I would never risk my life for my middle and high school bullies, which is one of the reasons why it was absolutely admirable of him to even think of protecting his abuser and his ex best friend who went for that abuser. Moreover, he also begged the possibly biggest Muggle hater for a Muggle-born’s life knowing that Muggle hater can read mind and kill him in the blink of an eye. If that isn’t bravery, then I don’t know what is.

And boy, if my man was so comfortable with your precious Potter boys dying, he would have been sunbathing in Hawaii instead of suffering for almost 20 years to make sure Harry our celebrity win.

I don’t disagree if you dislike or criticize him, mainly because I understand Snape was a git to many people who knew him. But if you dare to twist an action of his that is so admirable into something utterly horrible to support your poorly thought narrative, I am ready to fight you.

Once, back when I worked in an LGBTQIA dungeon, I encountered a significantly older person who remarked to me that they hadn’t been to “this type of place” in decades. They struck up a conversation with me and told me how amazing it was to see an openly transexual youth such as myself. I asked them about their experiences with gender and they said “oh, well, I’m a bit male and a bit female. Men’s and women’s clothes, sometimes makeup in a suit, sometime fresh faced in a dress when I’m at home. You know, bisexual” Obv this puzzled me at first until I realized this person was using bisexual in a very, very, literal and old fashioned sense, as in, dual-sexed. Non-binary.

Y’all gotta understand there are generation gaps in the language we use and you open yourself up to a LOT of very interesting stories if you stop blocking off the past.

One of the biggest problems with modern community is the idea that (white) western, post 2000s LGBT vocabulary is the only correct way to speak about sexuality and gender.

Like the freak outs under pictures of protests from the 70s-90s because signs and shirts say faggot and dyke and queer, as if these words weren’t a key part of identity and activism.

Beyond just English, I saw a couple people making fun of the term “gender x” in an anime…but why would a Japanese production adhere to English standards?

Or the way people talk about pronouns as if every language uses pronouns the same way as English.

It’s just…it indicates a mindset that these words are objective and written in stone and western youth culture is always the most correct in a way that…feels icky. Diversity in people includes diversity of language.

i know a bastardized version of “death of the author” is popular with the kids these days but there’s value in knowing what an author meant even if you disagree with their message or don’t think they did a good job conveying it or don’t personally like them. literature has a purpose beyond using it for your own personal moralizing or as a basis for fanfic. and for a group of people who are like “the author meant the curtains were fucking blue,” there’s also an obsession with putting every single word under a microscope to maximize the worst-faith readings they can take from it.

all right i queued this last night because i was already posting a lot and didn’t want to flood anyone’s dash but you guys i need to talk about this more.

like, okay. i grew up REALLY STRICT christian. like. every piece of media i consumed underwent a fine-toothed comb by my parents to be sure there wasn’t anything “sinful” in it. I got into a tearful, screaming fight with my mother over whether I was allowed to watch a piece of educational children’s material on PBS because one of the characters said “damn” once.

(I’m still not sure they did. In retrospect, I think my purity-focused mother misheard something and, having her suspicions confirmed that you couldn’t trust any “secular” source not to be sinful, reacted accordingly.)

Do you know what my teenage rebellion was? Listening to the oldies station in the car when I had my driver’s license and could go places on my own. That was my big fuck-you to my parents: listening to the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel and the Fifth Dimension when they couldn’t tell me how I shouldn’t be listening to them because the creators of that music were drug-addled, free-loving atheists whose own disregard for God and religion might just infect my impressionable spirit. Like I was gonna listen to “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and go do LSD and become an atheist. This was my teenage rebellion in the year 1999.

I’m 35 now. And all right so I became agnostic. But I didn’t become a drug addicted prostitute because I loved listening to psychedelic rock music as a teenager. (And you know what? Even if I had become a drug addicted prostitute, I’d still have worth as a human being, so dissect that one.) And it wasn’t even the psychedelic rock music that turned me agnostic: It was Christianity itself. But that’s another story altogether.

My point here is: Y’all are on here acting like my goddamn parents, “don’t watch this” and “don’t listen to that” because this character does XYZ problematic thing and this author said ABC ignorant thing two years ago at a con when they were put on the spot in an interview. If you watch this movie where a teenager falls in love with someone five years older than them, you’re going to become a pedophile! If you read this book by an author who once used an outdated term for someone in the trans community, then you’re a transphobe!

Y’all need to sit the fuck down and stop acting like nobody ever taught you to think for yourself, because I know damn well that you’re capable of critical thought and you don’t need your media chewed up and spit into your mouth like a baby bird. And I’m an adult and I sure the hell don’t, so stop telling me I’m going to choke because I’m consuming something complicated, complex, and not already pre-morally-dissected for me.

Grew up under the thumb of my Baptist Christian Grandmother, and everything I consumed via tv, movies, music, books, or games, had to be screened to make sure she approved so my “soul” could be saved.

I grew up in the 90′s, in the era where Pokemon was encouraging satanism, Harry Potter was teaching witchcraft, Power Rangers encouraged violence, and video games inspired school shootings.

My grandmother was almost every bit of the mother in Waterboy to a T. If she didn’t approve of what I liked, it was clearly the devil and I needed to stop liking it. This shit didn’t even stop when I was in my twenties.

I get summoned for jury duty and I’m told it’s going to be a long drive and a long ass process so I bring a book. Now at the time I was in the middle of reading the Percy Jackson series, knowing my grandmother (who had to drive me) I knew she wouldn’t approve of me reading a book series about other gods, so I instead bring the Zombie Survival Guide a neat little fake instruction booklet. Apparently, even that wasn’t safe for my poor innocent developing early to mid 20 something impressionable brain because zombies were the foot soldiers of satan.

Even before me, my dad had to deal with similar shit with his mom. One day he came home from school and almost all of his rock band and movie posters were torn down from his bedroom walls and thrown away because his mom thought they were too evil. And no, this wasn’t the grandmother I was living with.

It is surreal as fuck to have survive life under my grandmother and get out from under her, to be 30 and log onto the internet and see people my age or younger claim how better they are than the “boomers” then do the exact same puritanical policing they did over the exact same topics for almost the exact same reasons.

“You can’t like this because it’ll turn you into drug addicted prostitute.”
