Eva Stratt but she's wondering what the fuck is taking the guys with the handcuffs so long, because she has sacrificed everything, her future, her soul, her friend for humanity, and someone has to punish her now, right?

Eva Stratt, but the world is cooling. But the crops are failing. But rationing plans need to be drafted and nations need to be threatened into submission, to get as many people as possible out of this alive. But it's her job to be right, and someone who is always right is a very, very valuable resource right now.

being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that you’re supposed to do warm up sketches every time you’re about to work on serious art when you’re fuckin twenty-five

What’s up I have an actual college degree in art and I was never ONCE taught to do warm ups.

when i was in undergrad, it was kind of mentioned in and offhand way that we should do warmups, but we were never shown what that meant. And, y’know, we were young so it didn’t matter so much. 

Being older now and having an art job it’s…kind of essential. 

So: a quick primer for those of you who are like ‘ok but how do i actually go about doing this warmup thing.’ 

1) you may be tempted to do ‘a warmup drawing’ which is just a drawing that will take longer than it needed to and probably be frustrating and kind of bad because you didn’t warm up first. It’s tempting but always a trick your brain is playing on you! Do not trust! 

2) warmups will vary based on what feels good to you/what task you’re about to do/what motor skills you want to practice. That being said, some good standbys:

a) circles. Just a whole page of circles on whatever drawing surface you’re going to be using, whether that’s your tablet or your sketchbook or a drawing pad on an easel. For these circles you should make sure that you’re drawing from your shoulder and not your wrist. In fact, you want to be drawing from your shoulder rather than your wrist most of the time! forever! your wrist is delicate please preserve it! 

In order to ensure that you’re drawing from your shoulder, when you’re holding your pencil or whatever drawing tool you’re using, the only part of your hand that should be touching the drawing surface is part of the last two fingers–some people prefer the finger tips, but I tend to favor the first knuckles. Either way, the fingers should really be ghosting over the surface, providing guidance rather than support. 

I usually start with big circles and then go to smaller circles and lines of ellipses, and then try to fit circles and ellipses inside other shapes i’ve already drawn as a precision exercise, but i don’t do that unless i’m feeling loose

b) spirals! i don’t always do spirals, but if i’m stiff and the circles just aren’t cutting it, spirals are a good fall back. I start from the center and work outward, going both clockwise and counterclockwise until i feel comfortable with the whole range of motion. Some people really care about getting perfect spirals but for me it’s all about making sure i’m comfortable with how i’m moving so who really even cares about how the spirals look. Not me! 

c) lines! straight lines! in parallel! i do a mix of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. These are often more from the elbow than the shoulder, especially if I’m working on a smaller surface. For this exercise, I recommend holding the drawing tool perpendicular with the surface

d) connect the dots. This is a precision and accuracy exercise and takes two forms. The first is to draw two dots and then draw a straight line between them. The second is to draw three dots and draw the curve that connects them. This sounds a lot simpler than it is in practice. Take time to ghost over the line you plan to draw before actually committing to your line. (I don’t always remember where I picked up my warm up exercises, but I’m pretty sure I got this one from Scott Robertson. His how to draw and how to render books are very technical but also accessible and worth checking out)

e) cubes, spheres, cones, and cylinders. These help get your brain into a more volumetric space. I draw multiples of each, rotating the forms around, and I’ll often take the time to do some rough shading on at least a few of them

f) spidermans! This one is really good if you’re going to be storyboarding or working on dynamic poses. Just fill a page full of spidermans doing all sorts of acrobatics. 

g) beans. I don’t do beans too much anymore, but I know a lot of people like it so I’m mentioning it here. Fill an area with different size bean shapes without lifting your pencil off the paper. 

h) short medium and long line repetition. draw a short, medium, and long line on your page, and then draw directly on top of them 8 to 12 times, doing your best to exactly trace what you’ve already drawing. Repeat with a wavy line. I’m bad at this one, which means I probably need to do it more. 

And there are lots more options too! Hit up youtube to see what other people recommend, put together your own go-to list, mix it up when you’re getting bored, etc. 

This is a long list, I know, but I usually don’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes to warm up, and I can warm up one handed while I’m drinking coffee, so, multitasking hurrah. 

Sometimes I’ll advance to a precision warmup and find that I haven’t loosened up enough yet; it’s totally ok to go back to an earlier exercise! Also, all of this has the added benefit of kind of ritualistically getting you into the drawing mode so even if I’m not feeling it before I start, by the time I’ve gotten to the end I’m usually Ready For Drawin’. Brain hacks. 

so, yeah! that’s a lot of words, but! Warmups are important! Save your joints, take less advil, do better drawings!

Curse free AU! part 1/?

Qifrey is saved from the curse, but he is a very confused man right now. I was thinking how he would act if he just woke up from a coma! At first I wanted to also make a scene where other witches didnt help Qifrey at all... But I decided it was best to focus on Beldaruit and him instead.

WHA ch 68 gushing under the cut cause I wanna talk about one of my favourite sequences in the manga

I am completely and utterly obsessed with how much the first couple pages of ch 68 say with Qifrey with absolutely no dialogue whatsoever

first we have the immediate reaction to Coco taking the lightning bolt to the face which is just. listen im a sucker for when the only sound we get is a character's heart beat in response to an intense situation so seeing it laid out visually here is an absolute treat for me

Qifrey's attention is IMMEDIATELY on Engendale. we see that highlighted with one of my fav panels in the entire manga, from the very end of ch 67-

and then we see it again in this chapter with another really awesome illustration that, on first read, truly had me wondering if Qifrey was gonna kill this fuckin guy

I absolutely love the difference between these two panels as well because its all about the perspective difference. the first panel is from Engendale's perspective, and the second is Qifrey's. in both panels he's dangerously furious, but that first panel is chilling. Engendale is seeing Qifrey looking at him with damn near murderous intent, Qifrey almost looks inhuman in that panel, he looks absolutely terrifying. Qifrey's perspective is nowhere near as intimidating, and we're still seeing his pulse racing

at this point Qifrey's a complete wildcard. we genuinely have no idea what he's going to do. Qifrey has demonstrated- repeatedly- that when it comes to the Brimmed Caps he becomes completely unpredictable. we have seen him actually nearly leave his apprentices behind in order to chase after Brimmed Caps, and need to be physically caught and reminded of what his priorities should be. we have absolutely no way of knowing just what Qifrey's going to do next here; will he go to Coco, or is he about to unleash hell on Engendale? could go either way

until we get to the next page-

and this page says so much about what Qifrey's thinking without giving us any of his internal dialogue or thought process. breaking it down a bit;

Engendale is actually sweating a bit here because look at how Qifrey is staring at him. this is a man who, chances are, is about to launch himself at Engendale with everything he's got. Qifrey is furious and terrified and he's got a Brimmed Cap right in front of him- who just blasted his apprentice in the face with a lightning bolt- so there's absolutely no telling what he might do

until Coco comes to

Qifrey's attention is on her instantly. he snaps out of that rage in a second, and immediately pivots into focusing on Coco. up until that small twitch, I would've bet money on Qifrey going after Engendale and unleashing hell on earth on him. but once Qifrey sees that Coco is alive, and that she's conscious and in pain, she becomes his top priority, and he actually calms himself down for this as we see here:

that 'exhale' panel is so simple and yet so loaded. its just Qifrey, Coco, and the sand, because thats all Qifrey is focusing on in this moment. Coco on the ground next to him, and the sand that he uses to form a shield around them both

that 'exhale' panel is why im convinced that if Coco hadn't started coming to in that moment, Qifrey wouldve flown off the handle and gone after Engendale with everything he had. that exhale is a sigh of relief, and him letting go of the worst of that rage, and grounding himself so that he can be her teacher. this is him making his student his top priority, which means both ensuring her safety, and shielding her from the fight thats about to come

the difference in him in these panels is staggering. in that second panel, he's much more collected. he knows Coco will be alright, and he knows what he has to do now is subdue Engendale and bring him to justice

this is also a massive change from when we saw him confront the Brimmed Caps in Romonon, and speaks to significant growth in that time. Qifrey faces Engendale with composure and laser-focus, and he keeps Coco safe while he does it, and shields her from potentially seeing anything that might traumatize her further. this fight with Engendale has to happen, but he knows that Coco doesnt need to see it, and he only does what's necessary to subdue Engendale to bring him in. his priority is, ultimately, keeping Coco safe neutralizing the threat. this is fantastic growth to see on his part, when previously in the Great Hall arc, his ability to prioritize his apprentices over his hunt for the Brimmed Caps was (rightfully) questioned

I also want to shoutout this bit from the same chapter because I think its a great example of Shirahama's way with subtlety in her art that makes for big emotional impact-

Qifrey gently rousing Coco, and her opening her eye to see him. Qifrey looks very worried and upset here, but if you really look at where he's looking...

he's not meeting her eye here, he's looking slightly down from her eye- at the burned side of her face. it's just a small detail, where his eye is focused, but it packs such a punch once you notice it

the look on his face in particular is just. Shirahama and her expression work man. look at how sick Qifrey looks, how worried, how guilty. the attention to the shading under his shaded lens, placing some emphasis on where he know his missing eye is

this is Qifrey wondering if Coco will lose an eye to the Brimmed Caps just like he did, because he couldn't protect her

rewatching iron lung on the plane (because what else am I meant to do with my time) and HOLY SHIT, how have I not seen anyone mention this shot ????

that is genuinely 100% elli in the background of the shot where Simon finds the pendant. I'm actually geeking out. An official fifth photo of my biological daughter elli (counting the sequential shots as single sets).

Also kind of confused because I do NOT remember seeing this photo on Molly Brown's website (where 'all' of the camera photos are). Maybe I'm just tripping out but again I'm on the plane so will double check when I get off ASAP.

UPDATE: officially not on the list of all camera shots. I'm kind of sad because that means we don't have a full record of all photos, but it also makes me so excited about what else we haven't noticed!

I do like how purposeful shirahama-sensei has been so far with the queer stuff like. I’m rereading vol9-12 for Reasons and it’s reminded me that. due to The Specific Way The Japanese Legal System Is, one of the ways gay men are able to approximate the legal rights of marriage is by adopting their spouse. and to me this makes the choice to have Atwert (canonically Galga’s lover) take him as an apprentice even more meaningful. Without this context it’s a bit of an odd writing choice but with this context they’re not only grounded as a political allegory (a LOT of witch hat is sociopolitical commentary) but also experiencing something that would be familiar to the japanese queer audience. Anyways idk I just think it’s interesting. Also wanted to share this with non-japanese fans to. preempt some fandom weird.
