Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Y. Davis
Here’s a free PDF of “Are Prisons Obsolete” if you are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the prison abolitionist movement. This reading answers many of the questions you likely have regarding the call to abolish prisons and police.
One of the things I love about Angela Davis is that her writing style is so easily digestible, even when covering complex theory such as this. Do not be intimidated by the subject matter, it is fairly easy to grasp and I think everyone should read it.
i’ve passed by your smile a few times every so often when i look up, sometimes as a passing thought, sometimes clouds part the sky like hair that’s hanging off the side of faces that we really never got a chance to meet. the world isn’t happy right now and it’s not particularly safe to be outside. i know that peace can only come through patience and pushing forward, sometimes things are fucked up. sometimes people stand around, sometimes we waste time. i don’t want to spend anymore years of my life being unconsciously sad because that’s not how life should be. you should always aim to be in a place that’s going to make you feel alive. so do something that makes you feel that liveliness. feel alive. i know these are letters sent to the moon, and i’m sure you haven’t had one from me in awhile. i’m sorry, i guess life has been strange. maybe it has always been strange. a writer typing something to someone he has never even meant, but at least i try to be consistent with you. it has been raining really bad lately, i think the world is crying too. won’t you tell us about another one of your dreams? i promise it won’t take too long and i’ll listen. sometimes we need a reset, sometimes we need to start over. rome wasn’t built in a day, but rome also didn’t last forever. i can only pray that we’ll do better than rome. i love you friend, thanks for reading from your comfortable seat in heaven. talk later. thanks for smiling down on me tonight. it means a lot.

Protesting works: don’t let it die
Reminder to not give up, you are bringing about change.
List of positives to come out of the recent protests as of June 4:
- George Floyd’s murderer charged with murder and manslaughter, then had charges increased, then the officers that watched it happen were charged with aiding and abetting
- Louisville police (Breonna Taylor’s murderers) department will now be under review from an outside agency, which will include review on training, bias-free policing and accountability. (Unfortunately her killers have still not faced charges yet as far as I could find.)
- Charges are to be dropped for Kenneth Walker
- Atlanta has announced plans to create a task force + public database to track police brutality in metro Atlanta area
- Minneapolis city council members are considering disbanding police force in favor of a “community-oriented, nonviolent public safety and outreach capacity”
- Colorado lawmakers have introduced an incredible police reform bill that includes body cam laws, repealing the “fleeing felon” statute, banning chokeholds, and more
Feel free to add more if you know of more!
- LA Mayor announces plans to reduce funding to police department by about $150M and instead invest that in minority communities for jobs and education
