After the Primarch's awakening, in the exceedingly rare moments where he had no pressing concerns to attend to, he would wander. He would walk through the Macragge's Honour and catalogue the changes, what remained the same. One of his most often visits were to the Avenue of Heroes, weaving his way through faces of sons he would never get the chance to meet.
There is one statue in particular he lingers on. In a far corner, a chapter master whose name was lost to the time after the Primarch's death when everything was in upheaval. One attendant manages to summon up the courage to ask him if he knew this chapter master, though the rough dates they have imply he did not rise to the position until after he had been put in stasis.
He doesn't answer for a long moment. Then he tells them the story about how a red helmet used to mean censure. He borrowed the practice from the Night Lords, did you know? Until the day his world shattered, when Calth was attacked, and one brave lieutenant kept his ship together until Guilliman could regain order.
They still don't know his name, but his statue is kept with more care after that.
Still trying to figure out lighting and shadows, but I think it came out kinda cool!
I like to think that Thiel became Chapter Master at some point- pretty sure that's not canon.
This was originally going to be a much larger scene with more of the hall but I realized I didn't want to draw All That XD so maybe a project for later down the road. Posting this now or else I'm going to keep tweaking it.

In other news I splurged my xmas money on a drawing tablet that I'm really vibing with and was finally able to draw the thing that's been stuck in my brain for ages. Really happy with how it came out! Is it perfect? No! But it exists!!

Why Sisters of Silence choose to cooperate with Guilliman instead of Dorn in Ashes of the Imperium?

At first glance, the decision by the Sisters of Silence and the Custodes (effectively acting as one entity, the Talons of the Emperor) to reveal the critical status of the Golden Throne only to Guilliman seems straightforward.
On the surface, the reasons are obvious:
1. Guilliman brought a fresh, massive fleet capable of retaking Luna.
2. He is a statesman capable of wrangling the mortals.
3. Unlike his brothers, he didn’t endure the Siege of Terra; he lacks the PTSD and is arguably the most clear-headed.
4. He held the logistical keys to the Imperium. It seemed there was “no other choice.”
But was there really “no other choice”?
If we look closer, those obvious reasons likely weren’t the deciding factors. We have to remember a crucial detail: The people who knew the Emperor‘s secret—the Custodes, the Sisters of Silence, and a select few mortals—share a common trait: They do not trust Primarchs.
And among the untrustworthy Primarchs, Guilliman was the least trusted. He was late to the Siege. He held a massive independent army. And everyone was vaguely aware of what he did in Ultramar (Imperium Secundus).
So, if they were acting solely on the “obvious” reasons listed above, telling the most ambitious, potentially secessionist Primarch that the Emperor is effectively dying would be suicide. Guilliman already controls the grain and supply lifelines of Terra. Are the Talons really so helpless that they would hand the ultimate leverage to someone they suspect of empire-building?
Think about it from the perspective of the mortals and the Talons. The absolute worst-case scenario for them isn’t a single rogue Primarch.It is the Primarchs forming a united, cohesive front,again.
Even if loyal, the whole HH series(and all the lore around this era) highlights a key theme: The post-human logic of Primarchs and Astartes is alien to mortals. They are difficult to control and almost impossible to constrain. If the remaining loyalist Primarchs formed a solid, agreed-upon ruling council, mortals and the Talons would lose all agency. The Imperium would be ruled by a group of irritable, impulsive demigods who are unable to control themselves.
So, handing this secret to a widely beloved, trusted Primarch (Dorn) would be dangerous. That Primarch could rally his brothers, unite them in purpose, and retake Luna. But then? You have a united brotherhood of demigods running the show.
This is where the genius of the decision lies.
While the Talons and mortals distrust Guilliman, the other Primarchs also distrust Guilliman.
He is the most powerful Primarch militarily, but the one with the least moral authority among his peers. He is capable of retaking the Black Ships to feed the Throne, but he cannot rally his brothers into a unified political bloc. He cannot form a “super-council” of demigods because his brothers won’t listen to him.
By revealing the secret to Guilliman, Sos created a specific set of outcomes:
1. The Usurper Scenario (Unlikely): Guilliman uses the secret to seize total power. However, even if he had the ambition, he has no motive to let Terra burn. Without the Throne, there is no empire to rule. Retaking the Black Ships is his priority regardless of his ambition.
2. The Failed Diplomat Scenario (Likely): Guilliman tries to tell his brothers the truth to get their help. But because he is distrusted, they question his motives. They think he is lying for power.
3. The Lone Operator Scenario (Optimal): Guilliman keeps the secret to himself and acts alone. This is the best outcome for the status quo. Because his brothers suspect him, he faces opposition. To overcome his brothers’ obstructionism, he must rely on the High Lords and mortal institutions.
Because Guilliman is isolated from his brothers, he has to empower the mortals to get things done. He has to give mortals weight, attention, and authority to counterbalance the other Primarchs.
Furthermore, to justify retaking Luna without revealing the Throne is failing, he has to push the narrative that “Chaos is defeated” . Even if he knows the Warp is still a threat, he has to lie. Later, when the Warp threat returns (as it always does), Guilliman is proven “wrong,” his credibility would take another hit, and his legitimacy would shrink further ensuring he can never be an absolute tyrant.
The Result:
* Guilliman and his brothers remain divided.
* Guilliman does the dirty work of saving the Throne (retaking Luna/Black Ships) but gets hate for it because he can’t explain *why*.
* Mortal power rises.
* The “Primarch Threat” is neutralized by their own internal friction.
Why did Guilliman accept this role?
Guilliman isn’t stupid. He could have foreseen this. He could have chosen the path of transparency: reveal the truth to his brothers, force a consensus, and use his charisma to win over the populace. This would have solidified his power and mended bridges with his kin.
But he didn’t.
1. Just like hiding Sanguinius's death from the public, Guilliman likely believed the truth of the Emperor's condition would break the Imperium further. He couldn't risk his brothers falling into a "revenge frenzy" rather than a tactical recovery.
2. Guilliman shares the arrogance of the primarchs. He looks at his brothers—Dorn (broken by the Siege), Vulkan (traumatized), Khan (wounded),Corax (missing),the Lion and Russ (brawling)—and decides that only he is sane and smart enough to handle the truth. He doesn’t trust them to be rational any more than they trust him.
‘He thinks he is right. About everything. And he’s impatient. So that‘s actually two flaws.He orders others to perform a task, he’s not satisfied with how it‘s done, so he’ll seize control to do it himself. You might not like this, but thinking like that can lead only one way. I won‘t speak it out loud, but you know what I mean.’

3.It has been said that only Horus and Guilliman were true political animals among primarchs, but in different ways. Horus understood Astartes but refused to understand mortals. Guilliman can manage any mortal, but struggles with his brothers. He knew that aligning with the mortals was the path of least resistance to getting the job done efficiently.
Thus Guilliman accepts the role of the liar which he hated because he thinks it is necessary. He doesn’t do it to be loved because he knows he will not get love anyway.
There is a poignant exchange in the Ashes of the Imperium between Prayto and a dying Son of Horus:
‘I find I pity you, brother,’ he slurred, beginning to lose consciousness as his body finally shut down. ‘They’ll never love you. One day you‘ll see that.’
The Librarian finally withdrew his sword, caked with boiling blood. He stood up, shoulders back, a vision of rectitude.
‘If that is all you care about,’ he said, ‘then you deserved this fate.’
This mirrors Guilliman‘s entire existence. He is the one chosen to bear the secret because he is the one who puts necessity above all else. Whether he suffers internally for deceiving his brothers and isolating himself is irrelevant to the survival of the Imperium,and Guilliman tells himself it is irrelevant, too.
It reminds me of that passage from Belisarius Cawl: The Great Work:
‘Are you sure this is the only way?’ Roboute Guilliman said in despair. ‘Are you sure?’
Then the primarch, poor Roboute Guilliman, stood over him, ten thousand years ago and not so long ago, always serious, always worried, no joy in his life of duty.
