The Earl’s son gave a smile to the general, taking his eyes away from the other male and letting those molten chocolate irises look to the ornate marble floor below them before bringing them back to the General. He had, of course, met Zelgius a few times before–sometimes formally and a couple times informally—but every time he did, Paul was struck by his presence.
“ I apologize if it seems out of place, but..
Do you think I shall ever be anything besides the Earl’s son? ”
“ Ah — you wish to know if you can create your own path despite being the Earl’s son? ” He questioned, a subtle smirk dancing upon the knight’s lips. “ I shall let you in on something, my dear boy, and I do hope that it gives you some reassurance. ” There was a short pause as his emerald optics gazed at the younger man, watching his face for any sign of a reaction. “ … I gave up my name long ago, back when I first left home, and I have never let my roots control who I am. I am my own person. I have created this all myself. You are you, if you truly desire to be. Aspire to be something greater and you will be. It is as simple as that. ”
The brunet felt himself nod, eyes not leaving the man's face and catching the smirk that blessed the knight's face with one of his own. He felt a swelling sort of flutter in his chest, hair gently brushing across his thin jawline as he listened. Paul felt as if he were learning something that few people knew of the General; something privy to the like of the Senate’s ears or the Empress, to be spoken of very little--nothing whispered under the glimmering fans of gilded noble ladies, but in the closed doors of palace rooms. Or perhaps he overthought things. His eyes closed, and his complexion became rosier than it already was, hidden behind lids and lashes before he opened them again, a smile on his face.
“ You put me at peace, dear General.
Sometimes I find my aspirations to be just that,
despite all that the Goddess has given me. But you are right, and...”
He took a moment to pause, wondering if what he was about to say was right. The moment was just that---barely a second, though as he thought it felt an eternity to him.
“ I’m truly thankful for the time you spend with me, Zelgius. ”
