you should read katabasis by r. f. kuang if you like ...
unlikable but relatable main characters
biting critiques of higher academia
love stories that don't follow the structure of a romance (between two overachieving PhD students)
philosophical debates and the application of classic logic
alice in wonderland and dante's inferno
examining toxic relationships between professor and students
detailed and in depth magic systems
raw examinations of the sacrifices expected of students
texts that make you think and ponder difficult questions about life, death, school, and what we truly desire
Also I have to say this. Anyone who ever scared me into thinking Katabasis was a hard read because it was too academic or like reading a textbook, what the actual fuck were u on about.
Op's tags are so true, it was not a hard read at all. Yes there was a lot of information but it was very easy to understand and explained very well. If you can't understand academically based books, then don't read academia novels.
A katabasis or catabasis is a journey to the underworld, can take a long time, one meanders through what has been, the world that both is and is not, starting to forget how the real world looked like, how do strawberries taste, how do you even exit, who are you even? In myths, it used to be a common theme, nowadays, sadly, it is more trickier to do, and is usually called doing a PhD.
yeah katabasis has a pretty great understanding of hell so far
