No one doing this should be allowed to call themselves a feminist.
The wealthy author escalated a social media spat that resulted in posting a photo from a 2023 event at the Institute of Economic Affairs in
Let's not beat around the bush: Children's author JK Rowling sexually harassed someone. In some jurisdictions, this would count as sexual abuse. JK Rowling has committed a sex crime against a woman and fell back on the old rape apologist standby of "she was asking for it".
I hope your nostalgia is worth it
I don’t like this actually
This is depressing does anyone else find this depressing
I would actually make the argument that the heart of the problem here is not either about fans, as the article claims, or production companies being exploitative cowards, as some of the comments are claiming. The heart of the problem is the increasingly eroding privacy we are seeing in the modern age.
There's some people in the comments saying "fandoms have always been like this" and others saying "No, it's worse than it was." And both are to some extent right. Fans (or at least a small percentage of fans, and the larger a fanbase gets the larger a group this will describe) have always been Like That; but they did not always have the level of access to creators and actors that they have now.
The notion that a performer needs to be constantly available to public scrutiny, that their personal information should by default be available to any rando with google, is pretty new. It used to be that actors would only be expected to engage with the public on limited, specific, and controlled occasions, usually with security provided. Now they're being asked to rawdog exposure to the mob 24/7 on their own.
(Also, production companies have always always always been exploitative cowards, just to get that straight; reading the biographies of literally any actress from golden Hollywood years makes that clear. It's just, again, more public now.)
There has also been a negative feedback loop as fandoms come to realize that the constant access they have to creatives increases their leverage and power. It did not use to be the case that this was so; fandoms pre-internet largely worked under the assumption that they didn't really have any meaningful way to contact or influence the publication houses. Even if they sent a letter or a campaign of letters, they wouldn't even know whether the letters were being received or read unless the publishing house chose to respond. So, without that expectation of access, the drama usually stayed internal. Nowadays, with constant immediate feedback from creators and publishers, fans are ever more incentivized to act out to try to push an agenda, get attention, or just vent whatever is going on in their lives onto a face contractually obliged to be friendly to them.
Hey maybe you guys should stop writing for the Addams family cause you don't get them at all.
Imagine my girl Morticia saying that shit in any other portrayal? NO? Because she wouldn't.
I really love Jenna Ortega as Wednesday
And when she's given good material to work with I love Catherine Zeta Jones as Morticia
but this show really does not seem to get the dynamic of the Addams Family as a whole like it just does not seem to grasp what their deal is as a family
The problem with Netflix's Wednesday is that one of the main things about the Addams Family is that they are counter cultural. Specifically counter to cishet, white, American, suburban norms.
Part of that is being the opposite of the shitty sitcom family where the wife is a nag, the husband is an idiot, the mother-in-law sucks, and no one seems to like each other very much. The Addamses actually love each other. There's no 'take my wife' bs. If Gomez calls Morticia a battle-axe or the ol' ball and chain he means it to be highly complimentary. There's none of the nonsense like in the pics OP posted. Gomez or Morticia lives with their mother in law (it depends on which version whose mother she is) who is literally a witch (geddit, 'my mother-in-law is such a witch...') and get on great. They genuinely and openly support, love, and care for each other through thick and thin.
But the biggest problem that Netflix's Wednesday has is that to make a really good Addams show rn would mean scrapping the Sabrina the Darksided Witch/boarding school Monster High concept, going back to basics, and having them live next to an upper-middle class, conservative values, MAGA family and letting their differences fuel the plot.
A really good Addams Family show would have Morticia fighting against book bans at the school and having hilarious misunderstandings about what her neighbour means about "Liberal witch hunts." It would celebrate queerness, and gender (and species) non-conformity because the Addamses are queer and gender non-conforming, and not always definitely human (Cousin Itt, for example). You know Fester's gender identity is probably something like 'an abomination.' If one of them gets asked, "What are you?" the answer is a prompt, "An Addams."
They would be fighting for co-ed sports so Wednesday can trounce a boy at fencing, and would find out her chromosomes are just 'spooky' or something.
There'd be an episode about immigration and being targeted by ICE. OFC several Addamses come from somewhere weird and arrived in the USA via broomstick, or tunneling from some underground community of cryptids, or other hilarious misadventure. Gomez would desperately want to be blackbagged and treated like a dangerous animal (cue a major flirting moment between him and Morticia). They would permanently scare ICE out of the town.
Wednesday would fiercely support Landback. Pugsley would get redpilled and learn a lesson real quick. Gomez would get into (and out of) Crypto, and Morticia would have run-ins with MLM 'huns.' They would advocate for freedom of religion. Granny would rally alongside Evangelicals to have religion in school, only to reveal she meant witchcraft. They would support UBI, and be anti-landlord. Easy episode idea: Gomez is a landlord and goes on a spiral about it ("But, Gomez, you love leeches and scum" "Not this kind! Morticia, they've painted everything white, in my name!!!" "No!") and they wind up in a battle with the town because he wants to unburden himself of this shame and the town wants to stop free community-owned housing.
The point is that Netflix isn't going to touch any of that with a ten foot pole. They don't want to; that's way too political for them. Instead, they made this wildly unrelated supernatural teen drama that has nothing to do with the original concept or world that the Addams Family exists in (they're outsiders in the real world, that's the point).
And, worse, Netflix's Wednesday actively goes against the original themes by being vaguely conservative in its values.
Netflix's Wednesday fails the assignment so bad I'd laugh, if it wasn't so disappointing and enraging. Just take a look at what the Mary Sue had to say about the whole "werewolf conversion camp" debacle for a microcosm of the many things wrong with this show.
"It wants to use hot-button topics like conversion therapy and colonization but it doesn’t understand how to work them into the metaphor. In fact, it barely knows how to work with the basic metaphor of “monsters” and how they function in the horror genre in general. In storytelling, the monster or the freak has always been the stand-in for the societal outcast. For the person who can’t be controlled by the dictates of polite society. They are the subtext for the outcast. But Wednesday makes the subtext text by literally splitting the characters into “outcasts” and “normies.” And yet the outcasts, the monsters and freaks who live on the fringe, are also the privileged and elite."
In my opinion, Netflix's Wednesday is wholly unworthy of the Addams name and is an outright blight on the franchise.
…I want a world where this is the version of the show we got. Because that all sounds awesome and like it would make all the right people mad.
Simple change to walking into a mirror-universe would put this show on track
Somehow... Tim Burton should know better
My spouse asked how the first season of Wednesday was, and my honest answer was, "It's taking itself too seriously." I'm about halfway through season 2 (and have been stuck there for a while), and I think I need to slightly revise that opinion.
It takes itself too seriously, for sure. I stand by that. But when I say that, I don't mean that the Addamses are taking themselves too seriously. I mean the show is taking the very fabric of the Addams Family premise too seriously. It doesn't understand that it's supposed to be comedy, much less that the comedy is in the blissful lack of care that they aren't like the people around them, while the people around them lose their shit. (An essay for another day: the Addams family are comfortable in their own selves, while no one around them is, and draw their comedy from that dichotomy; the Munsters are desparate to fit in with those around them, and the people around them are befuddled by this, and the comedy comes from that.)
The Addamses should be allowed to have fun. The only person having fun in either season is Uncle Fester.
But the second season? The second season is highlighting a thing that at least partially flew under my radar in the first season: the show cannot stand an unanswered mystery, both in canon and in the mysteries the show itself creates. It has to find the answers.
It begins to feel to me like someone niche was allowed to publish their own fanfic, and it's a fanfic that doesn't line up with canon. Seen this before, with a certain author and the Doc Savage series, with various and sundry unneeded prequels, etc etc.
There's a reason I've been stuck halfway through season 2 for 3 months.
In the end, I wouldn't miss at all what was described above, but I want the Addamses to be having fun, and I want some mysteries to just stay mysteries instead of being so anxious to reveal their secrets.

Reblog if you say "Y'all"
With socialized healthcare, you pay for other people's healthcare.
With capitalist health insurance, you pay for other people's healthcare AND rich people's profits.
There's an easy solution that keeps everyone happy. Just have socialized healthcare, with the option to set aside additional money to give to your favorite rich person. Then, those who only wish to pay for other people's healthcare can do that, and those who wish to pay for other people's healthcare and rich people's profits can do that too.
the only place that 'i suffered and because i suffered so should you' belongs is when you see something diabolical or emotionally devastating on the internet so naturally youve gotta call up your best friends
may I respectfully add: "This is awful; try it!" *holds out a food or beverage*
“You think every citizen should have access to free and accessible healthcare?”
Wrong!!!
I think that Asylum seekers and Migrant workers and The Undocumented and Everyone Else should get free healthcare too
I love immigration
This one made the fascists and the racists really really mad. I get hate mail daily for this post
Imagine getting mad because someone else’s child’s chemotherapy doesn’t cost them 100,000$ .
Exclusive: Analysis offers ‘smoking gun evidence’ that overturns previous assumption that bronze age individual was male
"The Upton Lovell Shaman, a bronze age individual who has been depicted in museum exhibits as a bearded spiritual leader and metalworker, was female, an ancient DNA analysis has revealed.
The 4,000-year-old skeleton, along with the extensive collection of stone axes, metalworking tools and the remains of an elaborate ceremonial cloak found in the grave, is viewed as among the most significant bronze age burials in Britain.
The artefacts date to about 1,800BC, a time when the ability of metalworkers to transform lumps of rock into molten metal would have given them a special – possibly even spiritual – position in society. Such roles, many had assumed, would have been reserved for men, but this narrative has been turned on its head by the latest analysis."
The leftovers from making Cherry Bounce last night.
4c Brandy (can use Whiskey/Bourbon or Vodka if preferred)
16 oz pitted cherries (fresh or frozen)
2 cups honey (or sugar)
2 whole cloves (optional)
1/2 stick cinnamon (optional)
2 whole allspice (optional)
Put cherries and spices into a cleaned and sanitized 2qt mason jar (or split them between quarts or pints). I've seen vanilla pods used, or cardamom pods. I sanitized with OneStep.
In a large pot or saucepan, combine brandy and honey and heat on low until the honey is dissolved. Pour into jars over cherries and close. Shake lightly to mix.
Shake well to distribute the ingredients. Place in a sunny location for 1 week, and then store in a cool, dark place for 2-6 months before straining. The cherries can be used within a week of straining for baking or cooking. The liquid is a delicious cherry liqueur that can be sipped or added to mixed drinks for a sweet cherry flavor.
The recipe made a smidge extra liquid, hard to say if it was because I measured more than I was supposed to (I was not very exacting) or if my cherries were bigger or something, idk. But, I did not waste any of it, the leftovers are REALLY tasty. I ate a few of the cherries, and put a little into a Dr Pepper.
dungeon meshi but they end up in the back rooms, a cursed idea that was eating away at my brain

Remember when Xbox was going to basically ban used games for the xbox one, and Playstation made fun of them with that video titled "how to share games on Playstation" and it was just one guy handing another a game disk? And now Playstation is getting rid of physical disks entirely
It’s like they expect us to just forget their original marketing schemes in favor of more and more money grabs.
Holy fuck
This works best if you keep windows closed.
Another design is using 2 20x25x1 filters, taping them to the sides of the box fan and then to each other so they sort of make a triangle, then cutting cardboard to make a top and bottom to the triangle.
This was discovered as a more effective design during the 2020 US west coast fires.

A better more efficient and odor eliminating homemade air purifier than just taping a 20x20x1 filter to a box fan. Sometimes you need to
If you live on the west coast of the United States, fire season is coming and this is vital.
We’ve been using one, and they’re great. Might try to make the double filter version this year.
theyve been doing a bunch of studies on this during the pandemic and this design is best! 4 filters and a shroud to optimize flow rate.
