i posted this on my main but im gonna post it here too

i wamt to make another vent acc bc this community genuinely helped me so much and im so thankful for it but the trauma of my irls and parents finding it and then using it against me and the fact that it meant the irl had been lurking for a long time makes me scared to make a new one

and id have to go by a different name bc they know i go by sand but that means i wouldnt be able to have the same mutuals and i

so id have to basically create a new identity and im just so upset bc this was my ONE safe space, the one place i could let it all out without censoring myself, and now im absolutely terrified irls/parents will find it. they already know about this account and the backup, so id have to completely change.

when they found it and told my therapist ive never been closer to offing myself like it was horrible

so if you see this, please please just let me have this for myself

honestly like i get the poly(nesian) vs poly(amorous) thing, and n(on)b(lack) vs n(on)b(inary), and i’ll change to polyam or ply or enby if asked to avoid confusion, but i also need yall to know that like…its okay for one abbreviation to have multiple meanings. theres only 26 letters and we can reuse some of them, no one is “stealing” anything.

Mhm! I was once hounded off a trans group on fb for using nb to mean nonbinary! The context of the trans group and referring to someone transitioning was enough to mean that nb couldn’t get confused with nonblack. 

I’d also like to add that n.b. is also widely used latin abbreviation too, as in ‘nota bene’ -take note.

In English we only have 26 letters (and in others more or less than that). Repeats are bound to happen and not out of animosity. In the other languages I speak there’s 27, 29 and 18.

It can also be the case that, no matter how common the acronym is or seems to you, others just… had no idea it also meant something else? Acronyms can be highly regional or subject-specific. Like, I’ve never in my life encountered nb as meaning non-black until this post. My use of nb (lowercase) to mean non-binary hasn’t been one of exclusion against another meaning — it’s just the only meaning I knew it had. Give people a chance to learn before assuming malicious ignorance.

I also got shit on Facebook over the NB thing. Honestly, people need to get offline sometime and realise not everything is a dogwhistle. Its almost as I’d the Internet is predominantly teenagers who have no idea what they’re talking about

Yeah! Like I lost a valuable community resource and a few acquaintances too. I’m in a goth trans fb group where saying nb to mean nonbinary is banned, which is just frustrating as the whole group is trans themed, so surely nb would not get lost in any other context. I keep my mouth shut so I can enjoy the group, but making people worry they might say the wrong thing by accident and get their communities taken away (esp. for closted people) is just a bad way to run a community space.
