Winter turns to spring and Shane is set up on a blind date with one of Hayden’s friends, some guy from work named Todd who Hayden swears is a Good Guy, and the whole evening Shane is bored to tears. All Todd wants to talk about on their date is Todd, Shane barely gets two words in the whole evening, and at the end of the dinner Todd says, “you’re a really good listener. I’d love to see you again sometime” and before Shane can decline Todd’s lips are on his in a closed-mouth yet somehow slimy kiss. Shane steps back, finds a polite way to say no, no thank you, and is texting Ilya’s cell with an SOS. (Todd had paid for his Uber to the restaurant, but Shane’s not looking to give Todd any reasons to think Shane might owe him a second date). Shane doesn’t think he’s ever been so relieved to see Ilya’s cab materialize out of the darkness, to hear the grin in Ilya's voice through the window, "Your chariot awaits."
Shane spends the whole trip recounting his truly terrible date in his dry, matter of fact way, until Ilya is laughing so hard he has to wipe at his eyes, banging a hand against the steering wheel.
They pull up to Shane's brownstone and Ilya just idles there, neither of them wanting to break whatever spell has settled over the inside of the cab. Finally Shane clears his throat and says, "Well, I uh, I better let you get back to your night. Thanks for rescuing me back there. I was sure Todd was going to ask to split an Uber home." He reaches for his wallet, but Ilya just waves him off, says, "This one's on me. The least I can do after such a terrible evening for you. Plus, your story is the most I've laughed all day. Fucking Todd." Shane just grins and goes to open the door, but Ilya says, "Ah, wait--" He kills the engine and hops out, coming around to open Shane's door for him, bending into a truly ridiculous bow, arm outstretched toward the brownstone, "Your majesty."
When Ilya straightens he’s right there, a breeze ruffling his curls, close enough that Shane can feel the warmth of him cutting through the cool spring air, and he smells so good and his eyes are so blue, and it hits Shane that they've never been face to face like this before, and his mouth goes a little slack, and he feels himself flush when Ilya's eyes dart down to his lips, and Shane lists forward just a little and then Ilya's lips are on his, soft and sweet and open, and Shane's groaning into the kiss, and Ilya's tongue is in his mouth, and Shane's back is pressed against the cab, and his hands are deep in Ilya's hair...
