this should be the most reblogged post on tumblr before it dies
I just googled this and… yes, it’s absolutely real.
And there are so many articles and videos and discussions. Like, the scientific community is buzzing about this.
So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.
The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.
Thank God someone bothered to check.
I have a wild idea. what if we supported our claims of fact by linking to a reliable source. better yet, what if we went hogwild and just straight up linked to the actual unpaywalled study

Please keep interacting with this post because when I come to tumblr to procrastinate, this shows up again in my notifications and guilts me into writing again

There's a lot to dissect in the "you're just being lazy" sentiment that crops up in so many contexts, but I'm especially frustrated with how focused it is on the short-term. If someone is feeling lazy at that moment, then they just aren't feeling like doing work. Even this "feeling" has a ton of nuance, from task avoidance to choice paralysis to hyperfocusing on a different task.
But some people take it a step further. They generalize that singular moment that someone is being lazy and make it a part of their entire character or indicative of how unproductive they are 24/7. It's especially damaging in education when "laziness" is a much easier lens to view students' behavior. It's not as easy to acknowledge the plethora of factors and prior experiences that build on top of each other, resulting in a complete negligence for academic work as a whole.
It could be familial demands. It could be a focus on getting money to pay bills. It could be past teachers accepting the bare minimum and not working to train unproductive behaviors out. It could be trauma from being overworked by authority figures. It could be undiagnosed and untreated intellectual disabilities. It could be cultural influences that de-prioritize academic work.
It could be several of those factors. It could be all of them. But it's always pegged as "laziness".
"I ain't reading allat" has always left a bad taste in my mouth. Especially when there is an infinitely funnier "No I've read it several times but I still don't get it"

All gays will go to hellsite
What if in hellsite but not gay
NO!
every person you meet will have one bit that only they find funny. it is important that you hate that bit as much as possible in order to enrich their experience of doing the bit. it is part of the enjoyment of the bit

Researchers & experts are being scrutinized more than ever by the public and threatened with being fired or defunded because coverage never gives their work nuance. So, AI discourse has also made this worse?
AI was first conceptualized in academic circles and used for years. Now that the term AI is broadened and public-facing, have researchers been hit with new criticisms for the tools they've always used?
It's crazy that some food chains depend on two factors to keep afloat:
1. You haven't worked there to know how shitty it is
2. You have so few options to choose from anyway
The first is applicable to chains like Starbucks. Shitty hours, labor, requirements, and little union / worker power.
The second is applicable to stuff like Subway. It's everywhere. It's some form of edible nutrition. And if you're in the middle of nowhere, it's basically the only option.
My cursed Stanley cup made for giants and her knock-off sister are possessed by the ghost of apple cider past
Surely there has to be a name for the type of language that's used in professional communication channels (i.e. ham radio, telegraph, telephone wires). I'm referring to like... naval ships talking to each other. Hobby ham radio users talking to the ISS. Morse code messagers greeting each other. The request & acceptance between NORAD telephone operators. Rally co-drivers shouting directions to the driver.
There's a certain beauty in the interactions they have. A carefully practiced choreography. A standardized way of talking that efficiently communicates really complicated, abstract ideas or thoughts or actions.
Sometimes, I catch glimpses of:
Spaces that I used to be in, but now aren't because I don't agree with their themes & values
Spaces that I've naturally "avoided" because (see above)
But I've wondered if I should be staying out of those spaces. I like external pushback & tension when it comes to my ideas. I don't labor under the delusion that I'm some intellectual savior, nor that I could change their minds if I simply "sit down and use rational arguments". At the same time, I don't want to shutter myself into echo chambers and become more detached from what the "average" person thinks or believes in. But there's totally a risk of me being INCREDIBLY unhappy with interacting with anybody in those circles.
