"all you ever do is complain" that's not true. I also resent.

That adorable scene in Frankenstein when Anna-Maria is reading a book aloud to the Creature (albeit unknowing)?
Well. It's almost blink-and-you'll-miss-it (and the actress is not actually reciting from the book, it's a different poem that I'm not familiar with)
but
It's hard to make out, but this is what she's reading:
A german children's book that was first published in the 1840s and has been an unbroken success ever since. It features cute little stories told in rhyme with accompanying adorable illustrations, each about a different child Just Like You!
Every child does something naughty and is then punished. Like the kid who doesn't want to eat his soup and starves to death. Or the kid who plays with a lighter and sets herself on fire. Or the kid who sucks his thumb, and then the tailor comes and cuts his thumbs off with giant scissors. Or the kids who make fun of a Black dude and get dunked in an inkpot by Santa (admittedly, kind of based for the 1840s).
Did I mention that the illustrations are cute, colourful, and extremely graphic?
(example)
The author wrote this as a christmas gift for his 3y/o.
Everyone knows this book, no one likes it, and yet, it is inflicted on every german child at some point in our lives. Which may explain why we are Like That.
And it's one of the first stories the poor Creature ever gets to experience. Our baby just can't catch a break.
fun fact: my partner's mom named her kids after the kids in this book. Which is truly an inexplicable thing to do. (My partner's name is Philipp. I forget what his brother's name is, or how the character in the book died.)
i love having friends who can communicate like adults it's so cool
imagine being like "hey this made me feel bad" and they're like "oh sorry i'll try to be better about that" and that's all it is
for a girl who loves sleep so much you think iād go to bed earlier
Feeling physical exhaustion as a psychosomatic reaction to things that feel daunting or intimidating is such a ridiculously counterproductive thing to do. Like there's a situation that requires you to be alert and mentally present and paying attention, and your brain just goes "hey I don't wanna. I don't wanna be here. How about going unconscious instead. No fuck you we're warping out. Night night."
