Thieving in the RP Community
It’s becoming an epidemic and honestly it’s sickening. It’s disgusting that someone would take something that someone worked so hard to make and build up this atmosphere for everyone to grow and become a part of. The latest incident actually happened to an rp we’d recently closed down. It was a decision between the other creator and myself to shut it down for personal reasons. As a gesture to the members that had remained with us through thick and thin we thought it’d be okay to allow them to keep their roles and continue to roleplay in a closed group. We put this on our private group chat and also on our hiatus theme. We thought that they deserved to hang on to them for creating them so beautifully.
This was the message we’d left for our hiatus page with the addition at the bottom.
It came to our attention that the very same members had in turn opened a new rp with one of the admins that had left the group and with the roles that we had left in their care. They’d simply changed the last names thinking that that would make them different enough. But not only that they’d taken many of the same original headcanons for characters from our group and recycled them in the new rp. My co-owner and I stumbled across this rp and were infuriated as I’m sure most admins and writers would be. Why would another write steal content from a group like that? And so blatantly? It’s disgusting. We thought about putting them on blast right then and there but instead we spoke with one of our former members, Admin Sofie, about making changes so they weren’t exactly alike. We also asked that any unique headcanons for characters and species not be used and that a disclaimer be placed on their page about the characters they’d stolen. We thought that would be the end of it.
Of course we’d gone back to check and see if the content had in fact been changed and we came across this little gem.
They are lying. They were in no way given permission to take these characters outside of the now closed group. They know they’re lying because they’ve messaged my other co-owner multiple times about taking down the latter part on our hiatus message.
We know nothing may come of this but we have seen this time and time again. It’s disgusting that anyone in the rp community would sink this low. And we hope this serves as a wake up call to everyone. We all work hard here and we all want to have a fun environment but thievery shouldn’t be taken lightly. We hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else and we thank you for taking a moment to read this if you have or even skim through it. Please if you can just remember we all are here for the same reasons and some people just are here to wreck it. Don’t be a wrecker.
