So. I showed you Bug's begging dance yesterday, but I feel you should get to see the death drill as well. When she actually gets a mouse, she performs the death drill- a rapid back and forth shake of her head with her beak almost against the ground, that would extremely efficiently kill any small animal she got her beak on in the wild.

Thankfully she is not in the wild and the mouse is already dead, but she doesn't know that.

Also it's just impressive how the mouse disappears. Schlorp. No horking necessary.

Anyway, I think about the death drill a lot. I wonder if velociraptors did this to small prey items. If archeopteryx did. If compsognathus did. They had hands, or at least front claws, but I wonder if they did this still. How many ghosts of dinosaurs past echo in her behaviors?

still thinking about the time my bf asked about favourite dinosaurs and my brother said quetzalcoatlus (pterosaur (not a dinosaur)) and my bf said dimetrodon ((synapsid (stem mammal) (went extinct 50 million years before dinosaurs evolved)) and i said crows (bird (dinosaur)) and yet i was judged to be the incorrect one in this scenario

Ok, I NEED you to understand just how insane even ATTEMPTING this was for them.

1. Playing an instrument is difficult. Doing so in sync with others even more so. Don’t think I’m stepping on any toes saying that.

2. Dancing is difficult. Doing so in sync with others even more so. Still not controversial.

3. YOU AVOID, AT ALL COSTS, MOVING YOUR BODY WHILE PLAYING A WIND INSTRUMENT.  To make the correct, pleasant sounds, you need to be in the correct form. And that form involves your ENTIRE body, even your legs when sitting down.

4. “oh, but I’ve seen marching bands before and-” MARCHING BANDS HAVE ENTIRE SCIENTIFIC FIELDS DEDICATED TO FIGURING OUT HOW TO MARCH WITH MINIMUM BREAKING OF PROPER FORM. A marching band tries to be as smooth as possible while moving, so as not to jar their instrument, mouth, neck, arms, torso, or anything else.These ladies and gentlemen are BOUNCING and still playing properly, what the FU-!

5. AND ANOTHER THING! Wind instruments and dancing BOTH make demands on your breathing, so the fact that they are dancing (making you breath faster for extra oxygen) AND playing wind instruments (making you effectively hold your breath) AT THE SAME TIME is HUGE. Their lungs must be MASSIVE.

All of that also; the song is Sing, sing, sing (with a swing). If you wanna listen to some of THE SPICIEST big band ever recorded. Its a big hard song and this band does it expertly.

I read one of these when I was a kid and LOVED it, but could never find another - it didn’t have very good saturation in small-town South Africa.

I should check where I can get some now, I’m going to be spending a lot of time on planes in the near future and feel the need to load up my eReader with a good series that isn’t romance.

Apparently they are all available for free online. And not in the usual ahoy-there 🏴‍☠️ way things are available for free online, because apparently the author has given her blessing? Or she gave it her blessing several years ago during an AMA.

I’ve had a bit of a google and can’t find any statements contradicting that AMA.

This is the link to the reddit post I found with the books compiled into different formats - I use epub and so far the epub versions look great, but there are also pdf and mobi versions.

I’d like to say I’m going to be strong and not devour them all before I leave for Iceland next week, but I’m 36 years old and know myself well enough to know that yeah, I’m probably gonna read them all before I even get on the plane.

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.

And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.
