Rise isn’t just another “high school teen drama”. It was real. It hasn’t even been ten episodes yet, and I’m crying because this show isn’t getting a season 2 (as of now). I am not done fighting for it, and here’s why:
LGBTQ+ Themes - Everyone keeps going on about how Simon and Jeremy are perfect and how Michael is an angel. This is true, but more importantly, it’s what these characters mean. Simon is struggling a ton with his sexuality, and I appreciate the knowledge that people’s sexualities can be terrifying to some. But Jeremy, as far as I can tell, is perfectly fine with his sexuality, and I like that take as well. I fell somewhere in the middle of those two characters, so it’s nice to be able to relate to both of them. Michael is literally the only trans character I’ve ever seen on tv. I’m sure there are more (I hope), but Michael is done so well, and is actually portrayed by a trans person, which is an added bonus. These characters are so important to so many people sho rarely see themselves on tv.
POC Leads - I may be white, but I am not blind to the whitewashing of Hollywood. It’s so refreshing to have leads that are not white for once. It’s so important to so many people that they are represented on tv, just like it is for lgbtq+ kids. Seeing yourself in mainstream media is a beautiful thing. It makes you feel less lonely and ostracized.
Literally Every Other Storyline - Alcoholism in teens where the teen is actively seeking help. Teen pregnancy. Divorce. Foster kids. All of these are just as important as the two themes mentioned above. NBC, you started a thing, and you aren’t willing to finish it. That’s a problem. (Not to mention, the show is literally about standing up for what you believe in and persevering through the hard times. Yet, you’ve given up)
None of the fans know why Rise was cancelled because it wasn’t views or lack of fanbase or else A.P. Bio wouldn’t have gotten renewed. So in all honesty, it looks really bad on you. You cancelled a diverse show. You won’t give a legitimate reason as to why. I’m just about to give up on you, NBC, despite you having another one of my favorite shows (that you haven’t renewed yet, either). Save Rise. I’m literally begging you.
