Russia’s youth are turning to the Communists, not Putin

For those watching abroad, Russia’s presidential election last weekend was unexciting. Vladimir Putin, who has ruled the country for 18 years, won easily, just as he was predicted to.

“People say it’s only the older generation who support the communists—the nostalgic Soviet generation who are dying out. Actually it’s the opposite. The elderly are the main bulwark of support for Putin.”

By contrast, the younger people are the communist base, and the more active they are online, the likelier they seemed to back Grudinin; many online-only polls had him with a comfortable lead over Putin, often by as much as 45 percent to 25 percent.

Since losing the 2016 election, American liberals settled somewhere between “anger” and “bargaining” in their grieving process. But their inability to cope with the reality of living in a fascist regime and deal with the political consequences like civilized people has curdled their grief into a paranoid psychosis that runs deep throughout American politics. Arthur Miller’s Crucible is a fun literary source, but Richard Hofstadter’s “Paranoid Style in American Politics” is a good overview of this history of American paranoia. He wrote this in response to the Goldwater campaign, who was the 60s trump; incidentally Hillary Clinton began her political awakening as a proud Goldwater girl.

That paranoia was exacerbated by Americans coming to terms with the data-sucking monster they created in Silicon Valley. But again, feral animals that they are, Americans didn’t deal with the surveillance apparatus they created like responsible people. Instead it fed off the trauma of the 2016 election and became a witch hunt to find who in tech has been dancing with the Russians.

Tumblr was never a site in use by the media class that, having failed in its basic job role by missing the biggest story in 2016, Trump’s election, and hoping to recoup some of the lost political and social capital they lost to the tech’s democratization of media, the press joined the liberal witch hunt by going through sites they knew best, first. After hitting up Facebook and twitter though, they weren’t satisfied, so they’ve turned to the website they don’t even know how to use to threaten it with congressional indictments if they didn’t cooperate by purging users.

So tumblr, little eichmanns that they are, did what they insisted they couldn’t ever do against the real problem (Nazis): they started purging black bloggers who happened to fit the FBI’s profile of “black identity extremists.”
