I just wanted to gush because today is the five year (!) anniversary of when my partner and I got together!!!! They are the light of my life and we have been each other's first person as we learn more about ourselves and our dreams and it just feels so crazy to think the little closeted autistic elementary schooler that was so sure I'd never have anyone to really know me has had five years of the greatest person I'd ever met proving me wrong!!! I just love him so much and can't wait to see where our lives go from here ❤️

audism is the fact that in the US cops are only legally obligated to provide an interpreter after a Deaf person is detained. this results in many Deaf people being murdered by the state for not understanding instructions at things as simple as traffic stops.

many cops make no effort to use alternative communication with Deaf people even after we have identified ourselves as Deaf.

audism is also the fact that our signing is considered threatening and something that warrants murder. audism is the fact that our signing is labeled as gang signs and is used to justify murdering us. (and, for the record, actual gang signs also don't justify murder)

audism is the way Deaf people are accused of lying to "get out of things" when we identify ourselves as Deaf.... which is then used to deny us accommodations like interpreters or written communication.

audism is the fact that multiple Deaf people (mostly unhoused) have been murdered in my city alone in the last 5 years under the premises of "refusing to follow instructions" and "threatening hand gestures" and "gang signs." audism is the fact that Deaf people (and especially multiply marginalized Deaf people such as Black Deaf people) disproportionately experience police brutality even when it isn't lethal.

I don't watch many shows so I thought this was about regular doctors at first and was willing to agree with the post. You just never know in healthcare

obsession was great. the themes are especially great when viewed thru a feminist lens. i think you could even go so far as to view it as a metaphor for reactive abuse (the way bear makes a wish for nikki to love him more than anything in the world / be obsessed with him, then lets everyone believe she’s just gone crazy put of nowhere, all while still not wanting to end his relationship with her. of course it’s not one to one but the subtle themes are there.)

i also enjoyed how the film showed what everyday violations of consent can look like…media often shows the most obvious, often-dramatized occurrences of it, but this depicted a more common way of it showing up.

bear did indeed take advantage of nikki while she was in a mentally unstable state. he was well aware her consent was compromised. all the while he is very insecure about it, knows what he is doing, becomes aware even that nikki is aware and it is hurting her, continues doing it. i love that this film names this. it even critiques “not like the other girls” anti-feminism through sarah, who sees it as nikki taking advantage of bear…then she ironically tries to take advantage of bear’s vulnerable state herself by coming onto him.

also on a smaller note nikki’s batshit incestuous gorey hansel and gretel story had great prose i enjoyed it. my partner pointed out that before the wish, nikki saw bear as a little brother figure. meaning the hansel and gretel thing very well could have come from real feelings of disgust, like it nearly feels like an incestuous relationship to her.

and the ENDING. a lesser film would have insisted that, in these circumstances where the wish can only be broken if one of them dies, the male lead must survive between the two. but there was no self sacrifice from nikki out of “love”, there was no moment of lucidity or jealousy or rage where she kills herself, bear is forced by the narrative to take full responsibility for what he has done to nikki. what’s more— he reaches for a gun, almost uses it, ultimately decides on overdosing on pills. my partner and i personally think this was intentional commentary on masculinity, by having bear consider, then reject, the way men typically choose suicide in favor of the way women typically choose it. just a fun detail and maybe we’re both batshit.

good movie. all of that said though i’m sure a lot of people will boil it down to “haha women are soooo crazy…”

i love that Obsession didn't do the "oh if you'd just asked her out she would've said yes" thing.

like that kind of "you didn't need magic, you could've gotten what you want the honest way" dramatic irony can be effective and i see why a lot of writers use it for "be careful what you wish for" plots like these, but i love that Obsession is like, "no. she doesn't like you like that. there is no version of this where you end up dating her, and you need to get over it."

and nikki clearly did value bear's friendship and care about him; if he'd been honest with her about his feelings, she probably would've tried to let him down easy and remain friends - but of course, it's unlikely that he would've been willing to remain friends. bear's both too cowardly to admit the truth to nikki (which would've prompted her to reject him outright and at least given him closure), and too obsessed with her to just quietly accept that it wasn't gonna happen (which would've let him maybe start to get over his crush and move on). he's both convinced they belong together and unwilling to be direct in doing something about it, and he doesn't get even the barest comfort of knowing the real nikki loved him all along. she didn't. she liked him, but she didn't love him. and he swapped her out for a version of her that "loves" him... but doesn't like him. and he still wanted to try and make that work, even knowing the real nikki was trapped and miserable inside the shell of her body, being used by the thing he willed into existence. the tragedy doesn't happen because what he wants is within reach and he doesn't realize it - the tragedy happens because what he wants is impossible, and he refuses to see that until it's too late.

That moment where Nikki tells Bear that she's writing a love story that isn't a romance, and he doesn't get it. Can't recognize the difference between the two things, and the way it dooms them all. ugh. UGH. NOBODY TOUCH ME

if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made

Lmao I just went to the TV Tropes page for Obsession and I love this bit of trivia

“Hey man, your main character isn’t sympathetic enough, could you fix that?”

“Okay sure, I’ll make him MORE unsympathetic since you idiots missed the point”

nikki breaks my heart so bad because in the brief moments we see her before the wish kicks in, she's so cool and funny, clearly kindhearted, very driven about her future (telling bear about how she was going to quit her job to focus on her writing), and also very sure of herself as a person. ive seen people describe this movie as "mean-spirited" and I think thats so apt because it was a 2 hour long tragedy of the torture of this innocent girl, taking away everything she's ever had, including her own sense of self, putting her through unimaginable horrors, and leaving her with nothing except the three dead bodies of her friends, with the one who she trusted most being the one who did this to her. nothing for her to look for hope in, because she has nothing before her except a lifetime in prison or in an institution. it would be one thing if the movie ended on a note like weapons, where everything was over and there would hopefully be recovery somewhere down the line, but here, not only was the evil not committed by a random stranger but her closest friend, but she doesn't get any chance at recovery either. so goddamn tragic. on that note, if anyone can come up with some sort of fix-it for nikki please link it to me because I will be crying about this girl forever.

gonna go watch obsession in theaters. very excited to have meta thoughts after experiencing it on the big screen. for now i just wanna say that bear killing his cat through the negligence of his poor choices (re: leaving opioids lying around) is a BRILLIANT metaphor and piece of foreshadowing for like. literally Everything that's going to happen in his relationship with nikki.

Not only that, but in screenwriting there is a well known trope called "save the cat," wherein within the first act, you have your protagonist save a cat in order to establish their character and get the audience to like them (this can be any heroic or kind act on the characters part — though sometimes they literally save a cat).

One of the first things this film does is have Bear kill his cat.

i loved obsession’s emphasis on accountability and the fact that at every opportunity bear chooses to take none. he constantly chooses to absolve himself of blame, of consequences. he rejects ian’s implication that he’s taking advantage of nikki, he continually ignores nikki’s breaks where it’s clear she wants nothing to do with him— asking to be put out of her misery—and instead of feeling guilt or shame he’s offended. by the time he does start to feel guilty he passes that off too, blaming the people who sold the wish, and even his own misunderstanding, hiding behind his lack of ill-intention— nothing that he can be considered directly responsible for.

bear wants complete worship, a pet-like devotion, but not the responsibility that comes with it. he neglects his grandmothers cat resulting in its death, he wants nikki to be entirely dependent on him but can’t handle being that level of dependable for her. even in his method of breaking the wish, he can’t go through with it using the gun, and has to do it via pills-something more passive, because at his core bear is nothing more than a coward

Bear is one of the most selfish men in cinema. He has little reaction to Nikki stabbing herself, he destroys Nikki's life instead of just asking her out, his selfishness results in the death of his two best friends, and kills himself and let's Nikki deal with the consequences of HIS ACTIONS instead of giving Nikki she wants.

So from what I understand this is basically the Iron Lung, Project Hail Mary, Obsession, and Backrooms movies

I genuinely appreciate how obsession doesn't try to frame bear as morally grey but just fully leans into how deplorable he is. a lesser movie would have tried to give him redeeming moments along the way but no, at every single crossroads bear makes the wrong choice. when the customer service rep asks him if he wants to cancel his wish, he says no, and asks to alter it. when nikki, the real one, begs him to kill her, he asks her "if it would be so bad to love him", and right at the end, backs out of killing himself and tries to throw the pills up. he is the villain, not another victim, not a confused, cowardly boy, the villain.

We watched different movies.

Bear is a coward at every turn, yes, but he was kind at heart. He admired Nikki for her generosity. Sarah’s success lit him up for her sake. He was lonely and depressed and struggled with the soft, tender vulnerability at the beginning because every time he showed it he was told it wasn’t manly by Ian AND Nikki.

He wanted love, but he never actually took advantage of Nikki when he thought she was herself.

Throwing the pills up was desperation for life. That’s not cowardly, and I was relieved. I felt sick when I thought we were about to watch him die using the pills that killed his cat, finally giving in to that quiet beast that is suicidality.

The most cowardly move, in my opinion, is not killing Nikki and leaving her to deal with the fallout. But we don’t know what his plan was either. Maybe he was going to kill her like she asked.

So her screaming and freaking out after she first kissed him and looked extremely confused isn't a red flag? The number of times she "snapped out of it" and the real Nikki made it clear that she didn't want this?

That time she was asleep and asked him to kill her, and he just makes it all about him ("Is loving me so bad?")

Nah. He 100% raped her, sexually assaulted her, everything. He knew she wasn't herself and he still continued to abuse her.

He was gonna kill himself because he couldn't bear (heh) to live a life without a woman that he only got through force, who didn't even want to be with him.

He didn't kill Nikki or try to help her at all because he was too attached to easy pussy that he never should've got in the first place because he's too much of a coward to get a girlfriend normally.

Also there’s a scene where we see Bear and Nikki have sex but it’s obvious from Nikki’s face that she’s disassociating (this was right before the scene where Bear wakes up and finds her in the corner watching him while he sleeps).

And I don’t know if this next example counts since it’s from the script but here’s another example of him totally not taking advantage of her

I’m guessing this scene became both the scene where Nikki briefly gains control back during the kiss and screams “WHAT THE FUCK?!” and the scene I just mentioned where they “have sex” before he wakes up and sees her watching him sleep. The only difference is that in the script he’s not even fazed by the real Nikki’s confusion and horror…

And yeah, him initially wanting to alter the wish instead of cancelling it and him straight up refusing to put her out of her misery proves that he didn’t give a fuck about her wellbeing, he just wanted her as a sex doll without the “craziness”.

I think the disconnect here is because we can see Bear as:

- sympathetic, especially in the beginning because he's sad and vulnerable and yearning and also his cat just died

- not an inherently cruel person, in the classic "one dimensional villain" way. He isn't EVIL. At the start of the movie, he is presented as weak willed and cowardly, but not a BAD person. These are flaws but they're understandable flaws and if he made different choices, they wouldn't need to condemn him. His friends Ian and Sarah are mirrors to his moral failings and they reinforce his flaws. None of them are open about their true feelings and they ALL screw Nikki over. (Not quite as badly)

- what the movie does extremely well is present Bear, who starts the movie being more or less sympathetic (more sympathetic to some, less to others—but the worst you can realistically say about him at the START is that he's weak willed and kind of a dick, he isnt EVIL) as descending to the full on completely reprehensible levels of unsympathetic evil via a series of choices he makes

-first is technically agreeing to go out in the first place, even though he did not want to because his cat had just died (but because Nikki represents all his hopes and dreams of salvation, he decides he NEEDS to do this now), then being unable to be honest about his feelings when she directly asks (because he knows the answer and it isnt the one he wants), then making his wish (and it just had to be LOVES ME MORE THAN ANYONE, huh??)

- But he has plausible deniablity for the wish, because he didn't really expect it to come true. Because that's insane, it's just a silly toy. He was being bitter, and a dick, and made a spiteful wish because he knew she did not love him. He didn't expect it would do anything.

- Then, when clearly something is up, he starts to panic and wonder what the fuck is happening if somehow he did this... but he doesnt really believe it. Because again, magic isnt real. Clearly, Nikki is going through something because of her dad, and she was on molly... right? And that's totally fine suddenly because she does seem to like him back, wow!!

- now Not Nikki does a pretty good job of passing as Nikki here, and explaining away her initial weirdness, so Bear still has some plausible deniablity, but he's also clearly overlooking some major red flags because he desperately wants to believe Nikki suddenly returns his feelings. And it's convincing enough, and not yet weird enough, that he can.

- Ian dropping the bomb about her dad not having cancer, and Nikki having told Sarah she sees Bear as a brother like the day everything happened is the major turning point in my eyes. You can see it on Bear's face when he gets back to the table. He knows, he knows something is really wrong. And when Nikki freaks the hell out and makes a scene, and he calmly tells her "it doesn't bother me at all" or whatever? Thats the moment he really makes his choice, with full knowledge of what he's doing. Some part of him is clearly still clinging to the idea that this is Nikki and she loves him, but he KNOWS something is wrong and it's something he did to her and he straight up says he doesn't care. The next scene is them having sex and the way she's staring off in the distance blankly is so chilling... the point is pretty clear.

- it's not as if some switch has flicked and he's become some suddenly evil monster, but through these series of choices we begin to gain a better understanding of who Bear is and the value that he's really placed on Nikki. Which is that for all these years he's "loved" her, it clearly wasnt about her at all. Because he doesnt have her now and it doesnt bother him at all, so long as he can pretend.

- everything else that happens is just him trying to maintain that illusion and making worse and worse choices as Not Nikki struggles with the fact that she knows that he knows something is wrong now. And the more he sees the real her and turns away the harder it is to pretend

Bear is very much the villain of the movie, and as much as he's a victim, he's a victim of himself. He did all of this, he wished for it because he couldn't accept the truth and move on. But because he's presented in a very realistic way, I think many people are inclined to continue to view him more sympathetically than he deserves.

But in real life, "villains" very rarely act the way the do in movies. You rarely get some cold, mustache twirling monster who smiles while he rants about his plan to feed orphans to a machine that will turn them into toxic chemicals that will poison the environment but make him lots of money.

But there are a LOT of awful dudes just like Bear. Who are awkward and shy and kind of pathetic and sometimes act like theyre your friend but in truth they only value certain parts of you, certain ideas that you represent and way you make them feel. And they dont see themselves as bad and they dont think they did anything wrong, because if you didnt like them why'd you even bother being nice to them in the first place??

Btw. If you're a teacher and you catch one of your students (kids, tweens, teens) using AI for the first time, please be gentle with them.

Last week i was looking into one of my teen's homework when I noticed she was writing words she "wasn't supposed to know" in english (like "furthermore", for example. They only know very intermediary english) I got a bit mad for a second. I wear an "anti-AI" button all the time, i even told them before why i was anti-AI, yet she didn't listen to me and thought she could get away with it... But i decided to keep it cool because i didn't know why she would do this, since she never did.

Okay, one week after, this Wednesday, it was time for their class again and, when she arrived, i told her to come to my desk and asked her: "what is furthermore?" She went pale when she noticed the paper in my hands. I asked again: "darling, what is furthermore?" Then, she shuttered: "I don't know, teacher. I'm sorry, I had to ask Gemini because I had no time..." then I sat her down, she was clearly upset (she is just 13) and I asked her what happened. "I didn't have any time left because of my exams and there were too many units to go through. So I asked my mom to help me and she told me to use ChatGPT but I asked google instead." Okay. So I looked into her eyes and told her it was okay, that she didn't need to be upset, but she would have to re-do that paper and bring it back to me by the next week. I told her she didn't need google or gpt to do her work, because she got a very high score at her english exam (both at school and at the course). She got right back on her feet and we started class as normal.

The only reason why I'm telling you this is because I hate AI. I hate it SO much. But, as a teacher now, I hate ANYTHING that takes the learning process away from kids. I hate the GLOSSARY in my kids' books as well for the same reason bc they don't want to figure the words out with me, they want to check the answer as fast as they can to get rid of that boring thing and I don't blame them for wanting to get rid of the boring task! But I blame ADULTS for allowing the kids to go the fast way, when they need the slow process to learn something! Her MOM told her to use ChatGPT to ace her homework. You know, the person PAYING the course bills so her daughter can learn english at an early age doesn't care about her learning process. But I do. I care. And you should care too. It's not my student's fault, it's about the learned helplessness, it's about wanting to be the fastest, it's about the knowledge scrapping, the way nobody cares anymore. And the kids are being affected by parents who don't care anymore. They're byproducts of this. So please, when teaching them why AI is bad, be gentle. It's not their fault the world around them is teaching them how to be dumb in a smart, sneaky way.

The Burger still gets made, even if you go Vegan. If you don’t buy it, it just winds up in the trash. If you want to do something meaningful about waste, you need legislation: It must become a crime to waste food in those ways.

If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.

The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.

It’s not enough to just not participate in society

If you want the world to Change, you must leverage the mechanisms of political power.

You need Government.
