the problem is I love Trollhunters so deeply (I must've started watching it around the same age Jim was when the show started, this could've been one of the greats) and I would LOVE to recommend it to others but. God. That ending really sucked out most of the enjoyment I had.
I really loved the first season. I internalized some message about endurance and bravery from Unbecoming. I am so still not over what they've done to this show.
God. Unbecoming means so much to me. Just having a storyline where the main hero chooses to not become one is such a unique storyline. And it's good ass writing, I think. They brought back Unkar in a meaningful way that added some depth to his character! Even if it wasn't really him. Unkar MADE sense, of course he would be there. And it was just a small moment in like, the first or second episode of the series, Unkar's introduction in the beginning was arguably a simple throw away joke to confirm Jim's suspicion and unease to the audience, but then it became more than that, and correct me if I'm wrong bro dog but THAT'S good writing!! So what happened??
I feel like I go on this rant at least once a year but woah golly did James Lake Jr do a number on my hero's complex closeted trans ass. RIP Jimbo, you made every wrong decision before you left.
I gotta remember to take another look at each of these events to make sure they actually add up. Unbecoming, Toby, and the change made at the end there. Because Unbecoming Jim still isn't Troll Jim. Maybe he's changed in a way I'm just not seeing.
It took me a long time to warm up to Toby. I've always been such a snob about TV growing up, so I recognized the goofy side kick schtick they set up for him, and I hated him for that. But Toby, despite all his faults, actually is Trollhunter material. I think. He's shown to easily connect and empathize with the Trolls and other creatures. The obvious examples being Arrrgh and Chompsky. We also know that he's deeply loyal, always willing to stand up and fight for/alongside his friends and himself, and he's not that bad on the field either. We also know that Jim didn't like his life as a Troll. Unbecoming Jim wasn't Troll Jim, that feels important.
So it all WOULD add up, actually? But for some reason it just doesn't. It fell flat somewhere. It probably would've felt like a satisfying conclusion to the ending. Of course, I can't be sure of that until I rewatch everything again.
idk. sometimes it feels like they treated the movie finale as just another episode. time and place for mpreg, guys.
