Ok so I want to rant about Greek/Roman literature and contemporary interpretations so I’m going to. I’m reading this book on classical myths and it touches on changing perspectives regarding like relationships and it touches on Achilles but primarily focuses on Briseis leaving Patroklos as his dearest friend and footnote.
Like Homer literally writes that Achielles says to his mother
“seeing that my dear comrade Patroclus has fallen—he whom I valued more than all others, and loved as dearly as my own life? I have lost him”
LIKE THAT IS BEAUTIFUL.
And once again an academic source negates this and it’s not even an old book. It was first published in 2008 but still.
