That statement will be the most pleasant thing I say to you in this letter, so you might want to mentally accept that now before we continue. You finished fuming? Okay. Then listen up.Ā
You donāt know me, and I donāt know you, not really, but we have something in common. We were both on Pennsylvania Avenue on January 20th, 2017. You were standing in your cozy observation box, and I was marching down the street with my university marching band. I was the right hand corner marcher in the first line of flutes, do you see me?Ā I managed to catch a glimpse of you out of the corner of my eye as we went by, and I remember our drum line instructor telling us afterwards that you smiled at him and gave a thumbs up.
Iāve been thinking about that day a lot in the last month or so, but especially this past week.Ā And not just that my favorite thing to tell people about the experience when I got home was that you really are that orange in person. No, Iāve been thinking about what an absolute shitshow that day was.Ā
Iām sure you remember that the parade had to be delayed several hours due to protests in the streets of D.C. I certainly remember standing in our starting position for hours on a cold January afternoon, not able to run across the lawn to use the bathroom because they could call us to startĀ at any time. I remember for the first 45 minutes we stayed in formation at ready position, sure that it was just a short delay and that weād start very soon. I remember that after an hour, the military reserve band in front of us finally let their memebers break position, and our directors decided we could do the same. I remember that by the time we finally started marching, the sun was setting behind the capitol building and we had to put our equipment away in the dark (I was the uniform manager, and it wasnāt like weād never done this before, just that it wasnāt expected of an afternoon parade thatās barely over a mile long).Ā
Iāve been thinking about how that day was such a perfect snapshot of the four years that were to come under your utterly incompetent rule. I knew even that day that your time in office would be a shitshow, but like everyone else, I never could have predicted the true extent of the horror that was to come.Ā
There was some controversy before our university band actually made the trip to D.C. You see, it was a Christian university, and while Iām sureĀ that you as the president are aware that application and acceptance into the inaugural parade takes place before the winner of the election is actually determined, there was a large percentage of students at our school that did not want to be represented in the parade. Because there was concern that you did not exemplify Christian values, and in fact were directly in opposition to Godly morals (imagine that, despite what you think, a lot of Christians recognize you for the reprehensible excuse for a man that you are). There was a petition to have us pull out of the parade, and while administration elected to remain, there were several students in the band who refused to attend.Ā
I, while of course agreeing with everyone who said that your behavior was in direct opposition to our universityās beliefs and biblical standards, decided to attend anyway. Why? Well, as our head director put it, we were not going to march in that parade to support you.Ā We were going to march in that parade to support our democracy,Ā and to celebrate and observe the peaceful transition of power.Ā
Iāll say that again, because Iām sure you had trouble comprehending the meaning of it.Ā

And while that day was certainly not the most peaceful Iāve ever experienced, Obama still acted like an actual president of a democratic nation and stepped away, allowing you to swear your oath (do you remember that? you swore an oath. gotta say, you havenāt exactly done a great job keeping it). And now, four years later, here you are, your last chance to show even a modicum of respect for the office you hold, but instead you are neck deep in the most childish and inneffective attempt at a coup ever conceived by man.
You can act like a goddamn adult and concede the election, or you can fight it tooth and nail until the electoral college votes in December, but either way, you are leaving the office. You were voted out, and come January 20th, 2021, you will have to leave. If you want to let this get to the point where youāll be dragged kicking and screaming from the oval office, then I suppose thatās your perrogative. I just hope that you know that when you do, youāll be going down in history as the first president to refuse the peaceful transition of power.Ā
I hope you know that Iāll tell my grandchildren someday that I watched you enter the office to the protests of the crowd, and watched you be forced to leave it to cheers and people dancing in the streets.Ā
