Daryl’s background characterization has my entire heart. Going tense any time someone threatens a member of the group, especially Rick. Always grabbing his arrows when he can, but carving new ones when he can’t. Always walking at either the front or back of the group. Sticking close to Carl when no one else can. Watching all the entries and exits, even when the group feels they’re safe. Calling Judith “Little Asskicker” enough that other people use it as a nickname. Gripping Rick’s arm when Rick seems unsteady. It’s all so interesting

i think it’s very sweet that daryl has a much more clearly structured moral compass than rick does later in the series and is rick’s moral dousing rod in the moments when he’s most lost. they’re so cute.

i love daryl’s character progression and i really love that they didn’t erase daryl’s problems entirely. he’s still kinda an asshole and he still has tons of trauma and he’s still problematic but he knows very well right from wrong and his character arc is him learning the courage to show everyone else that.

daryl was always kind. he was born kind. that’s what made him mean- kind was not a safe thing to be in his childhood. so he learned cruelty as a defense mechanism. contrary to how it seems, his character arc wasn’t him learning kindness. it was him learning the courage to enact it.
