My professor talked about how women aren’t used to asking for things in the work place, such as raises, because we’re conditioned to downplay our achievements and hold off on asserting our value. She discussed how, even now at this stage in her career (a published doctrate), she shakes when she askes to be considered for a raise and about the first time she was really successful at getting one. After class I asked her what she asked her boss and she winked at me, took me to her office, and asked me to take notes.

She said she practiced this technique like 5 times in her office before she requested a meeting with her boss. I’m gonna share it with you guys because I really loved it.

You start off by thanking your employer for their support (whatever that means in the context of your work environment). You then say that you would like to take some time to discuss next year’s salary. You say, allow me to refresh your memory regarding some of my accomplishments or contributions from the past year, and you present a written summary of all that you’ve done. You close by saying, I hope that next year’s salary reflects this list of contributions and you thank them for their time and see yourself out.

I just loved how she made it seem so much less daunting of a task. She said not to underestimate your achievements as women have a tendency underreporting what they’ve done.

The fact that she shared this with me really meant a lot as well as women really need to be there to empower each other and help guide each other towards success. So if you end up using this, let me know! I want to see how it works for you ^_^.

What’s super terrifying, that I learned in my kinetic imaging major, is that our military actually hires game designers to design video games promoting our military, and markets them to kids as young as ten or twelve. Our government made friggin reality TV shows out of taking high schoolers and teaching them about the “awesome shit” that they could do for the military. We watched one of the episodes in my Critical Media class, and it made me so physically ill that I actually had to leave the classroom and heave over the toilet while sobbing my eyes out.

This level of propaganda can and does lead to violence even amongst said children. Ask any Puerto Rican child that’s ever refused to say the “pledge of allegiance” (that’s the real name for what most kids are asked to recite every day before school starts) what happens to them exclusively via the other children who consider this blasphemy.

I took the ASVAB (an intelligence test that the military uses to see which branch you would do best in) as a joke in 10th grade to see who would score higher, myself or my boyfriend. He scored a 91, I scored a 93. The next thing I knew, I had recruiters calling my house and visiting my school. I was pulled out of class to talk to recruiters who came to my school specifically to see me. One recruiter from the Marines showed up at my house after school. When I told him that my mother wasn’t home and I wouldn’t allow him inside he tried to push open the door and said “That’s okay, she doesn’t have to be here for us to talk.” I had to tell him numerous times that I would not talk to anyone without my mother present. Then he sat in his car and waited for her to come home. Keep in mind that I am an overweight female and these recruiters were still trying to get me to sign. They were talking about special diets and training programs that would get me in shape in time for my 18th birthday so I could join. It was ridiculous. My mom said that she had never seen anything like it, and she had scored a 92 during college when she had taken it. (Then again, she had joined the Air Force almost immediately after taking the test, because that was her dream.) Shit is scary.

Oh god yes this brings back memories. I took the ASVAB on a lark to skip classes. I scored a 92 and my GOD the effort they put in to try and recruit me… This was pre 9/11 when I did it, but afterwards (post 9/11) they got WORSE. They told me whatever I wanted to do for a career they could help me but they were so PUSHY they freaked me out. I hid whenever I saw the recruiting staff on campus

I started getting a recruiter contacting me when I was 26 goddamn years old, while married to a PTSD’d out twice deployed vet.  Eventually I responded to an email with “I’m fat, asthmatic and married to a human y’all ruined so leave me the fuck alone” and he did.  At the same time he started sending my then husband letters about how they were going to call him back to service if he didn’t re-up in the National Guard (who also get deployed to the Middle East), which is actually a lie. nevertheless, my ex was terrified he’d get brought back in and burned all the letters so there’d be no record of him receiving them. 

Turns out that recruiter won a bunch of awards in the state for his recruitment statistics. Interesting ways he went about it, huh?

the marines kept calling my house and mailing things to me and my little sister (who is 12) trying to get us to sign up and my mom finally had to talk on the phone to the dude and tell him that i was a chronically ill trans kid and i would not nor would i ever be joining the us military and they finally quit calling

ive also been singled out and yelled at by multiple teachers in school for refusing to stand and say the pledge of allegiance over the years, told things like i was disrespectful and was a traitor to my country and whatnot. its especially bad and military-centric in the south (i currently live in NC). If you dont live in the us, look up the words to the pledge of allegiance. its vaguely reminiscent of Nazi propaganda, and they start children saying it every day from age 5. how many 5 year olds know what they are saying and agreeing to? none of them, thats how many.

I scored really high on the ASVAB tests to! They were REQUIRED in my school as a graduation standard! Without taking them, you weren’t allowed to get your diploma!

I ended up almost going into the Marine’s because I was in a really abusive home place, and the only reason I didn’t is because my birth defect showed up during a physical!

My highschool required me to take the ASVAB. It was really cool that I scored in the 98th percentile! But then I started getting daily letters and phone calls from recruitment officers.

The offers sounded enticing, so I went to the local Navy office and met with a Petty Officer to discuss options. They told me I would have to loose 75lbs before I came to boot camp, and when I told them I have a history of heart issues in my family he said “it’s probably nothing”.

He started telling me about how easy it was to get a job in the Navy and post-Navy, and he could guarantee me I would never be deployed, and how the job market for what I wanted to do was pitifully thin and I’d be starving if I didn’t enter the Navy.

Then I told him I was on an anti-depressant.

He told me to stop taking it, without my doctors knowledge, so I could be “clean” of the drug for six months before boot camp, and that my mental health issues were because of a lack of discipline and exercise.

Even now, as a severely ill queer person, I still get a monthly call from them.

I’m a Veteran I did 4 years active duty in the US Army. Until very VERY recently, recruiters actually had an official quota they were supposed to meet of potential recruits and a ratio of potential contacts to actual recruits signed up. In addition to that when the recruiting command really needs numbers recruiters get bonuses for filling herd to place slots. A lot of the commanders still enforce this unofficially. In the early 2000s it was BAD, I have known more than a few recruiters who told me stories of basically being forced to work 18 hour days in order to get their numbers in. Heck in 2014 I knew a current recruiter who she said she had the same workload as before they changed the rules to disallow that sort of thing and she had to work in her office with the lights off so they wouldn’t find out how many hours they were working.

Plus recruiters are allowed and encouraged to lie to potential recruits, anything to get you to sign that dotted line (well its an electronic thumbprint but you get the point.) This is why I tell everyone who is interested in joining to bring a veteran of that particular service to go with them to the recruiters office if they are interested in joining. The military literally saved my life, I would not be here today without it, but its not for everyone and the recruiters can and will lie to you.

I don’t even understand why someone would point out the racial differences of one of his children though. One of the (very few) things I really admire about mormon culture is they don’t see adoption as an alternative to traditional pregnancy for sterile couples they see it as something that anyone who has the resources and the desire for more kids should do. Mainly its in the desire to widen the gene pool (most mormons only marry other mormons) and to convert more people, and also lest I forget Mormons adhere to the Quiverfull ideology about having more kids. But Where I live (Southern Utah) nearly every familly who has the resources to adopt has at least one adopted child, which I think is great

1. Fist: Make a fist around the epi-pen, don’t place your thumb/fingers over either end

2. Flick the blue cap off

3. Fire. Press down into the outer thigh (the big muscle in there), hold for 10 seconds before removing (the orange cap will cover the needle). Bare skin is best but the epi-pen will go through clothing. Avoid pockets and seams. 

- Ring an ambulance even if everything seems to be fine!

Don’t be wimpy about it, either. I know friends who are like, “but idk if I could stab you with a needle!” Please stab me with the needle, don’t be hesitant about it.

In my case (I can’t speak for all allergies), an epi buys me 20 minutes of breathing to get to the hospital. It is not a magic bullet, it’s a few critical minutes to help get me where I need to go.

For those who don’t know, people with serious food allergies carry epinephrine which is an adrenaline shot just in case they have anaphylaxis, which is a life threatening allergic attack. This shot is life-saving and must be administered to someone who is having an anaphylactic attack as SOON AS POSSIBLE, because an extra waited minute could mean their life.

It doesn’t hurt much at all to use this needle. The first time I used mine, I didn’t even feel it. But be sure to stab it IN THE OUTER THIGH. Do not stick it anywhere else or you could seriously hurt or kill someone. Just right to the outside of the thigh and then call the ambulance - even if your friend starts doing better, they could have a biphasic reaction, meaning a reaction that comes back (or they may need a second dose, be on the look out). If your friend has an epipen, then they have an epipen trainer that doesn’t have a needle and you can try it out just to be sure you know how to use the real thing if you have to. I’d also advise holding it a few more seconds then 10, maybe go for 14 just to be sure all the medicine is administered and that you didn’t count too fast - that’s what I did.

i noticed this in college and i had a meltodwn over it last year. now i kind of just accept it and i’m the only one that doesn’t wear shoes in the dorm. i still find it really gross but none of my friends care about taking theirs off even tho one of them fucking got gum stuck on my bathroom floor. like it comes to the point where u talk about no shoes in the dorm enough that people stop listening and somehow that’s just so much worse. *shrugs*

I’m white and I don’t understand it, either. My mom and I get on my dad ALL THE FUCKING TIME about taking his shoes off at the door. If you’re a guest and you’re in sandals and our tile floors are too cold for you, please tell me, I have a large collection of warm fuzzy socks specifically for wearing on cold tile floor instead of shoes. I even have a pair of ankle socks that will comfortably fit a child as young as five and I keep them for specifically this purpose. Afraid you’ll fall? My mom has rubber-soled slippers.

I mean, I kind of understand it if you’re in a rental with carpet so old it’s got traffic patterns worn in, or if the homeowner says something like “hey, leave your shoes on, we have a scorpion infestation and the exterminator can’t get here til Thursday,” but those are like … outliers.

In our last house, we pulled up the 30 year old orange shag carpeting, and painted the concrete underneath. Since it was easy enough to mop, we didn’t bother with taking shoes off. Plus, bare concrete was hard on the feet.

In Husband’s parents’ house, the floors were, uh, unsafe to walk on barefoot. I really, REALLY don’t want to elaborate.

And while I usually run around barefoot, sometimes my heels are in so much pain that I have to wear my sandals for support and cushioning. We don’t do shoes off at the door because we generally come in via the garage, right into the kitchen, and there’s no good shoe-stowing place.

I guess I’ve adopted the view of my former microbiologist college roommate: my cats walk in their litterboxes, then across the floor. My shoes don’t really add that much more. /shrug

I try to respect other people’s house rules, when I notice them or they’re pointed out to me, but in my house, eh, whatever you’re most comfortable with.

I also am strictly no shoes on in the house white person but that’s because of feet health more than caring about how clean the carpet is. Feet that are confined in shoes all day have a much higher risk for fungus and other nasties that love warm dark and damp environments, by keeping my feet in the air I limit that. I also attempt to alternate out my shoes by day so they have a significant dry time in between wearings. Mostly this is from my time in the military though as taking proper care of ones feet is a huge deal. So yeah seriously people take off your shoes when you aren’t walking somewhere that you need them for safety/aesthetic reasons or at the very least wear sandals.
