This isn't necessarily literal. It can apply to characters who aren't children too. But there's something about characters who are either certain of the fact, or terrified of the possibility, that they are just fundamentally wrong and bad at their core

whumper purposely targeting whumpee when they are with their team so reaffirm the knowledge that they are never safe

the team being unable to help because they are across the battle field, or because whumpee has a weapon to their head and they can’t risk it

whumpee desperately turning and twisting, frantically screaming for their team mates

whumper mocking the team’s efforts into whumpee’s ear: “Did you really think they would be able to stop me?” “All this time you’ve been free because I let you be. They could never have stopped me.” “Say goodbye, Whumpee.”

the last thing whumpee sees before passing out is either their team fighting for them, or standing shell shocked as they cant do anythingwithout risking whumpee’s life

upon waking up in captivity, whumpee screams at whumper and demands to know if they hurt their team. whumper plays along and 1. says they are all dead, 2. says they have captured one and kept as leverage, or 3. just grins.

team returning to their base of operations, unable to form a word when whumpee’s partner approaches, their smile slowly dwindling as they repeatedly ask “Where is Whumpee?”

team ready to burn down everything and unable to sleep, remembering the fear in whumpee’s eyes and feeling responsible

Panic rising, tendons standing out on their neck as they try to subtly look around for their captor, or maybe some way of escape

Wondering if screaming will do any good. Too choked up to try.

Leaning forward angrily when their captor shows up

Trying to make eye contact, but unable to keep it up. It's embarrassing to be so helpless. It's infuriating. And there's nothing they can do about it.

its always about the hurt being witnessed it's about the pitying looks it's about the team seeing their friend's scars and noticing whenever physical contact makes them flinch away. just seeing all the pain and caring so much that they'd do anything to make it better. it's about all the subtle, gentle steps they take to ensure they're comfortable. no grabbing, no sudden movements, no loud noises. it's like they keep wordlessly repeating "I care about you" just through their actions.
