this is huge… a three chair event
probably the worst thing that's ever happened to me was when this one time i was wearing my shirt that says "I HATE PAGANS" in giant block letters that i wear to the ren faire so that gay people don't try to involve me in their roleplays or whatever and i somehow thru a series of events that i will omit bc it's boring & i don't understand it encountered some kind of temporal rift and ended up in a roman forum in like the 390s or something. and immediately these guys in armor are pointing at my shirt & getting very excited bc obviously paganism had just been outlawed in rome, and i'm trying to be like "no no you don't understand" but they don't speak english & i don't speak latin so i'm just gesturing frantically at the shirt and then at myself and doing like a thumbs up motion which i later learned is not a good gesture to make in ancient rome. they're getting increasingly animated and i'm trying to pantomime like "different kind of pagans, future pagans, neopagans" by pointing at the ground (to indicate here/now pagans) and then making a big X with my arms and then pointing at the sky (to indicate future/different pagans) but this apparently makes them think i am doing a bit about how the old gods are pathetic, and they're really into this like slapping their thighs and stuff. anyway they take me to this official-looking building & there's this older guy there who seems important & has better robes than everyone else and through a series of elaborate hand gestures and latin & ingvaeonic cognates i manage to express to him that i am jewish, and in my time there are these different people called also pagans who “stelen” from my “tribe,” and then i see him start to nod and he says something to the guards & i'm like oh good we've achieved understanding and i'm feeling pretty good about this intercultural exchange we're having & then i got stoned. like with rocks.
Epstein files discourse has me more convinced than ever that we need to be talking a lot less about "pedophiles" and talking a lot more about child sexual abuse.
I talked about how conservative authoritarians define "pedophilia" as "youth autonomy," but even among less overtly authoritarian communities, the spectre of The Pedophile is, at best, a distraction from the reality of CSA.
"Pedophiles" are a distinct, discrete type of person. They're Not Like Us, but also, they Could Be Anywhere. They're hiding in plain sight among us, lurking and sabotaging. Anyone could secretly one of them. They're queer, they're Jewish, they're vaguely foreign. They conspire. They're a cabal. They have secret signals. They're rich and powerful and secretly control governments, but they're also poor and dirty and hide in alleyways. They're sexually deviant. They're everywhere and nowhere, and you should constantly be on guard against anyone who might be one.
Child sexual abuse, on the other hand, is abuse. It's an action, not a type of person. Anyone can commit it, because it's an abuse of power, and all adults and many other children have power over all children. Any adult has the ability to sexually abuse a child, because every adult has the ability to wield power over any child. Child sexual abuse is part of the continuum of child abuse, which in turn is part of the continuum of abuse, which can be committed by anyone who has the power to commit it.
The Epstein clients are the most prosaic phenomenon in the world. Rich, powerful people trafficked powerless people to force the powerless people to serve them. Rich, powerful people got away with breaking laws. Rich, powerful people uses people as objects -- in this case, as sex objects, but by the same structural mechanisms by which they use people to clean their houses, pick their crops, and assemble widgets in their factories.
It's not A Secret Cabal Of Pedophiles Conspiratorially Running The Government. It's just kyriarchy working as intended. Absolutely, keep up the pressure to release the Epstein files and prove what we already know, but if you're using "pedophiles" in a sentence where "illuminati" would make sense, put down the conspiracy juice and pick up the youthlib juice instead.
this is somewhat tangential but from what i've read on reddit, sleepovers are becoming an activity of a bygone era as parents more and more are not allowing their daughters to attend sleepovers for fear of sexual assault
what's interesting in all those conversations is that the parents are trying to protect their daughters by limiting the activities that they can do. What is not brought up in those conversations is anything about teaching their children the proper words for their body parts or making them feel empowered to call out situations where they feel uncomfortable. there's data to back this up, children who know the proper words for their body parts are less likely to be targeted and more likely to report mistreatment
if your protection of children is fully focused on attacking adults and doesn't include educating children, then you're more interested in attacking adults

been listening to Elton John's greatest hits this week and I keep thinking about 5000 Candles in the Wind from Parks & Rec, so I watched the music video and I always thought he was saying "miss you in the satisfaction" but he's actually saying "miss you in the saddest fashion" :/ lady mondegreen strikes again

You guys are never gonna believe what I found online:
A 3D-Printed, Comic Sans Mono Typeball for an IBM Selectric II Typewriter! Why does this font actually look so natural and fitting for a typewriter?? And it's only $8! This guy is doing the lord's work.
Holy shit. How come I never thought of 3d printing font-balls for my Selectric. That's the coolest fucking thing. There's unlimited possibilities with this.
The link in the OP is dead now, but the source is https://selectricrescue.org/. They also have Papyrus (1983).

“Maybe I like looking trans "oh your voice is too deep" Maybe I like having a deep voice. Maybe I'm not your femme fantasy. Maybe I'm my own fantasy. I love looking trans. I fucking hope that when I walk down the street, they say, "look at that transsexual!" And just maybe someone will see me and think, "hey, I can live that way, too."”
Am reading PHM after seeing and loving the film and I'm realizing that it is an academic's fantasy of getting kidnapped into your dream job with, oh no, all the resources and funding and exciting important space adventures! It's like fifty shades for asexual researchers

Got stuck for a few weeks playing the danclan sorting game and now I'm trying to get back to my beloved flahscards and finally set up a set that has one piece of legislation per US president
This is not easy, but it's also not easy for more reasons than I expected
Being president is an extremely difficult job, so I knew it would be hard to pick one thing per president. Also "legislation" is not really the right word for what I'm looking for because presidents sign laws more than write laws, "project" is maybe more accurate but it's hard to say that "the War of 1812 was Madison's most significant presidential project"
I expected most to have two or more things to choose from and the difficulty would be with picking. But it turns out Quincy Adams to Tyler were duds who did very little, except for Jackson who did too much and I'm giving him just the Indian Removal Act
Like Van Buren could be given credit for locking in the two party system, but that seems like too broad and widespread of a philosophical shift that I don't want to give any one person credit for it. Instead I'm giving him credit for the Independent Treasury
Tyler got Texas annexed on his last full day in office so more credit should probably go to Polk for actually getting Texas as part of the US, but Tyler has like nothing else except for locking in that the VP succeeds the president, but I'm giving that to Harrison for obvious reasons. Tyler is getting the Mexican-American War instead
Politics is hard! Learning about politics is also hard!
