Okay, I haven't posted in a bit, but I just watched Obsession and have some thoughts.
First of all, the movie has beautiful cinematography, and the acting by Inde Navarrette is fantastic. The scares are amazing and well-crafted. It also has some fun moments. A wonderful movie, and I highly recommend watching it.
Now for my other thoughts.
Spoilers ahead!
I hated how the women in this movie were treated. Both Nikki and Sarah are treated horribly and get horrible endings.
Firstly I truly cannot comprehend how a man can be so selfish and inconsiderate to wish for a woman to "love him more than anything in the world." Like wtf. Obviously that is kinda the point that it wasn't a smart decision but still it genuinely pissed me off. Then how he treats the situation after. Like he realizes that she is trapped as this obsessed person and yet he doesn't automatically try to fix it? How can someone be that self-centered and disgusting? Maybe I am just a good person but if i were to be in the same situation I would do everything in my power to fix it. Not that I would ever be so selfish as to get myself into a situation like that. Because I would never ever ever be so idiotic as to fuck with magic like that. Like I personally don't really believe in magic but even still I am not gonna fuck with something like that without do some research first and trying to completely understand it.
Back to the treatment of the women compared to the men in this movie. The women in this movie are literally given the shittiest outcomes. Sarah who like literally did nothing wrong the whole movie has her face smashed with a brick! With a brick so it isn't a quick or painless death! What does Ian, one of the characters who also dies by Nikki's hand get? He gets shot in the head. That is fairly painless and quick. Bear, the main guy, gets to die of a drug overdose(I think it was oxycodone). He "makes the sacrifice" and dies. But that isn't heroic in anyway. He leave Nikki to deal with the consequences and trauma of his selfish decision. Nikki this victim of the movie is left to deal with his horrible decision.
She is traumatized, has killed all her friends, and has ruined her reputation. She has the worst ending possible for her. I am so angry for her. I nearly cried for her because she did not deserve to suffer for the entire movie just to have to live and suffer consequences for a situation she had no control over.
Obviously this is a movie and so we don't have to actually worry about the legal repercussions but I have a degree in criminal justice so it came to mind for me. She is likely going to go to prison for the rest of her life. It is all Bear's fault and yet she is going to have to go to jail or at least be institutionalized because they could probably plead insanity.
I enjoyed this movie but it filled me with rage and sadness for this girl. She was a victim and in the end she is left with the trauma and the consequences
