I haven't seen the film yet, but I've been carefully following news about Mark Fischbach's Iron Lung for the last couple of months.

It's REALLY gratifying to see that on opening day yesterday, Iron Lung surpassed its 3 million dollar budget, grossing a cool 3.5 mil. Sam Raimi's latest film, Send Help, also opened yesterday - and it made back only 2.2 million of its 40mil budget.

Ok, you say, but why is that so notable? A difference of 1.3 million bucks is nothing in Hollywood, right? But please, walk with me while I give some context:

For those who are unfamiliar, Sam Raimi Created the Evil Dead trilogy, directed the Toby McGuire Spider-Man films, and remains a noted figure in the long line of Marvel Universe writer-directors. Whether you like him or not, he's an Action-Horror Juggernaut that's established his place in film canon over the last 40 years. Distributors pick him up on name alone. Send Help is his 16th film, so to say he's a veteran of film distribution is no overstatement. Despite the ad blockers I run on my phone and tablet, I've personally seen so many ads for Send Help over the last six weeks that I'm tired of Rachel McAdams' face. Raimi can afford that kind of marketing saturation; he spent 40 million making this film. It opened yesterday in 3,475 theaters, which is on par with a typical "big budget" release spread.

On the other hand, Mark Fischbach is, well, Markiplier. Despite his long youtube career, in the larger film world he's an incredibly niche, small potatoes filmmaker. Anyone who's followed the plight of Qcode's podcast-to-miniseries adaptation, The Edge of Sleep, knows that Mark's incredibly focused and tenacious when it comes to polishing and distributing his work. He fought tooth and nail to get TEoS out of development hell, arguing with streaming services of all stripes, and eventually facing blatant sabotage by Amazon Prime, despite already being Emmy nominated for his previous webseries.

In the wake of all that static from the TV industry, Mark knew he had to get Iron Lung to an audience with no studio backing whatsoever. He and his wife Amy contacted 60 individual theaters, asking for distribution. There's been no ad space on websites, outside of the domains belonging to theaters showing the film. There have been no billboards, no promotional tours, no studio money. But that's where 38 million Markiplier fans have taken over.

Mark's viewers and longtime fans called and emailed their local theaters directly, en masse, because they wanted this movie. The three largest movie theater chains in America sat up and took notice, and international theater chains soon followed. Now, as I write this, Iron Lung is showing in 4161 theaters internationally. That's almost 700 more theaters than Send Help. It's made a 17% profit in 24 hours. For Send Help to make that kind of box office return on investment, it would have had to make 46.8 million yesterday alone - the same amount of money that Sinners made over its 3-day opening weekend.

I don't care if you like Markiplier's body of work or not. I've heard people call this film a "Vanity Project," or an "Ego Trip." I've seen several reviews for the film that are less than glowing. Frankly, I don't give a shit. The debut of this film, on this scale, is a massive achievement. It's an eldritch chamber-horror sci fi bottle film. The last time I encountered a film built like this (one set, carried by one actor, produced on a shoestring budget), it was the Willem Dafoe film Inside (2023). That film grossed less than a million dollars worldwide through its entire run.

Think about that. Markiplier outgrossed a fucking Willem Dafoe Movie. Three times over. In 24 hours.

Forbes, Variety, and so on are like "Huh. This Mark Of Pliers guy made a video game movie that's running with the big boys. Weird." Not one of them has thought to give Mark his flowers for the truly unprecedented nature of this debut. Tiny production. Overwhelming pushback. The beginnings of an unexpected triumph.

It's almost like the film industry built this unfairly maligned artist a coffin, threw it into the ocean of hollywood, waited for him to drown, and got their shit rocked.

It sounds sort of familiar, doesn't it...

Since Markiplier is the husband of an Atiny and has sung Ateez during one of his videos before, I'm just gonna drop this here and say:

This man made a whole-ass movie based on an indie horror game, brought in the original creator of the game to assist in script writing, brought in the original video game soundtrack composer to create the movie score, funded the project by himself, brought in his own crew he's worked with on all his previous large-scale filming projects, and built a goddamn render farm in his own bathroom because he edited the entire movie by himself and needed custom cooling after his AC blew up.

On top of that, he also halted production while the SAG-AFTRA strike was going on to show support, turned down a role in 'Five Nights at Freddy's' so he could keep working on this project, and broke the world record for most fake blood ever used on a movie set, beating out 'Evil Dead' which used 190,000 liters - and he even got so much of it into his eye that it got him sent to the hospital during the shooting of this first teaser:

And now, as someone who's been a fan of this guy for over a decade, I can tell you he really, really doesn't know how to half-ass shit, which is why I know this movie will be fucking incredible, and now that tickets are finally on sale with the release of the final trailer, I better be seeing them selling out like crazy so we can get international screenings, because I DIDN'T WAIT TWO WHOLE FUCKING YEARS FOR THIS, JUST SO I CAN'T WATCH IT IN A GODDAMN THEATER!

I also think choosing the line "I just wanna live... is that so wrong? Why doesn't anybody else want that?" is a really gut-wrenching way to end a horror movie trailer and says a lot about where this movie's focus will lie - fear, isolation, a desperate need for survival, and honestly, that's the direction I was really hoping this would go in.

What is open source AI?

It's a program that publicly shares its code for free online, so that anyone can use it for themselves. This means that anything this AI is trained on could eventually make its way into any business, social media site, etc. That uses this code. Or, if not, it'll have the ability to harvest content as well as this.

Even since the app doesn't allow AI openly on the videos themselves, the app is likely to use our original content to train its AI. You might have seen that some AI have experienced a positive feedback loop of declining quality, training itself on other AI slop until anything it produces is unintelligible.

This is likely an attempt to prevent that in video format

Then, any other company that wants to use the code can use this better trained AI to make it even harder to recognize AI across the board.

There are sounds of cheers and crying and the two people hug each other as they exchange the flags. The man at the doorway then waved kisses to the crowd within the pride parade.

The Tweet says: "NO YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HE WAS WAVING THE PORTUGUESE FLAG BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE A PRIDE FLAG AND THEY TRADED FLAGS AND HE'S SO EMOTIONAL TO GET HIS OWN PRIDE FLAG I'M EMOTIONALLY RUINED"

For context, apparently they were worried that maybe he's a nationalist because he was waving the Portuguese flag and some nationalists opposing the pride march were waving that flag. But upon interacting with him, it turns out he didn't have have a pride flag and he wanted to wave *a* flag in support of the pride march. So they had an exchange and now he has his own pride flag 😭🥹.

This elderly gentleman lives alone in Porto, when he saw the march coming up his street all he knew was he wanted to participate, so he ran home to get the only flag he had to wave as they passed by, when they did he was overcome with emotion and called over one of the activists, they hugged and exchanged flags, he felt so overwhelmed that he could only hold it and cry.

This isn't a story about a closeted elderly man, António lives and has been living alone for many years now and that little moment made him feel included in something for the first time in many years.

Says the article:

"The act was "of support”, guarantees the man, especially because “each one is as they are and we are all the same”. “The joy I felt at this moment. I cried,” he recalled, still emotional when looking at the photograph offered to him during this report.

However, even though it reached thousands of people, the moment screams a feeling of belonging, of joy and also a portrait of loneliness as a consequence of aging.

Behind that door, whose image spread across the country, António is the portrait of a condition that affects many others like him.  He lives alone, but the walls of his home are full of memories of a life shared and full of love. “Memories I preserve,” he stresses.

He's not gay, nor does he need to be to support and respect the cause.

“We all have the same color blood. We are all the same.”

Still with an emotional look glued to the photograph that immortalized his gesture at the march, António remembers: “I felt embraced by all of them”. After a sigh, he says: “See this photo? I want to take it to my coffin.”

You let out a long and whiny groan as you face planted into the soft couch, sighing at the relief of finally being able to sit down

Your legs ached as your arms were tired from lifting them up so much

You once again sighed into the couch as it muffled up the noise, it was quite int he penthouse

You then suddenly hear a little rumble as you felt something fuzzy nuzzling your hand that was laying at the edge of the couch

Lifting your head up as you turned to see Derpy looking at you, he looked sad

"Hey Derpy.." You pet him making him give out a gentle purr, the vibration coursing through you aching body

You smiled, your mood lightening up then turned into confusion as Derpy lifted himself up on the couch causing you to sit up and you watched him with confused eyes

He then planted himself behind you as his tail flicked against your ankle

He wanted to cuddle with you

You hum in thought, thinking that maybe just a quick nap wouldn't hurt.. would it?

You crawled as you planned yourself on Derpy's fur, nuzzling yourself like you were on cloud nine

Derpy curled protectively around you as you finally got a blink of sleep, maybe a little bit too long of sleep

The Saja boys finally made it the pent house as they all exhaled, stretching as they all kicked their shoes off

"Finally" Abby groaned as he stretched his arms out but was shushed by Romance

"Look over at the couch" Romance pointed out causing all of them to look over, seeing Derpy but as soon as they all walked a little bit more closer

"It's Name—nim, they're finally asleep" Baby called out

"Yeah but a couch... we should move them to the bed to get better sleep" Jinu suggested to which all of them agreed

"Buttt We'll have to take them from Derpy first" Baby pointed

Derpy was wide awake, staring at all of them like if they were to wake you up, he would growl at them for doing so

"Don't worry, he'll listen to me" Jinu cheesed as he walked over, Derpy's eyes following, laying his head on top of your as you nuzzled into the crook of Derpy's neck

You were buried under Derpy, snoring peacefully as you shuffled closer

"Derpy, we need to move them.. don't make this any harder than it has to be— ow!" Jinu moved his hand away just in time as Derpy tried to take a little bit out of him

"Okay genius what do we do now?" Abby said, crossing his arms

Jinu snarled "Derpy.. no biting, we need to take them to the bed so they can sleep better"

Then suddenly Derpy sank into the couch taking you with him making all the boys gasp in worry to where the demon tiger might've taken you

But luckily you were in the big bed in one of the rooms as they all sighed

Jinu glared at Derpy, they all huddled around you with Derpy laying onto of the pillow

Now all of you were resting while Derpy looked out
