Face to Face with a Monster: One of The Daily Bugle’s own tells all about surviving the East Baltimore Snatcher
By Benjamin Ulrich
BALTIMORE, Maryland — 4:15 P.M. EDT — July 4, 2026 — After 20-year-old biochemistry student Gwendolyn “Gwen” Stacy was mistaken for a prostitute named Blondie and murdered by Jackson Weele, a scorned ex-customer who Blondie reported and got thrown into prison for sexual battery, working women began to disappear from Baltimore’s historic Block. This pattern of vanishings, eventually attributed to a suspected serial killer called the East Baltimore Snatcher, would go on for almost 2 decades. This year, the Snatcher was caught and revealed to be the now-former CTO of OSCORP, Miles Warren.
It was two years ago in the late hours of the Fourth of July that the BDP received that fateful call from one of many Guilford brownstones. Socialite Doris Allan of shakily informed the dispatcher that a naked young girl barely older than her own stepdaughter had banged on her door and explained that she had just ran away from the home of her kidnapper. When the girl described the house, Mrs. Allan recognized it as the home of her neighbor, Miles Warren, and immediately called the police.
“You never imagine it can happen to you,” Mrs. Allan told reporters after the news of Warren’s arrest, “That it’ll be one of your neighbors, somebody you see every single day. A lot of articles say that [serial killers] can be completely normal, but you never really understand until it’s someone you know.”
Medical reports described the young girl’s condition on the scene at the Allan home as “catastrophic.” Nowhere on her body was uninjured, and several of her bones had been broken. Estimates put the length of her captivity at around two weeks, yet the majority of the wounds were rendered superficial and most of her bones were some level of healed already. Scientifically speaking, that’s almost impossible.”
“It’s a … miracle that she was even alive,” 30-year-old paramedic Makaveli Church, one of several medical professionals who arrived to the Allan home, explained, “I had never seen that many injuries on one body before. I don’t go to church anymore, man, but that … made me believe in God. She shouldn’t have been able to walk.”
“Most bones have an average healing time of 6-8 weeks when it comes to total breakage,” explained 47-year-old orthopedic specialist Dr. Elias Wretham, “Generally speaking you see about 5 stages in bone healing, and where let’s say her tibia would be in late stage 2 and inflamed, it was deep into stage 4 and forming a hard callus. In the best hospitals in the world, that doesn’t happen. There is no reason why it would happen in the basement of a brownstone owned by a serial killer.”
That young girl was the Daily Bugle’s resident corporate investigative journalist, Chanel Gajowa. At only 16 years old, she narrowly escaped the grasp of one of Chicago’s most shadowy figures and lived to retell the tale two years later.
“He drove up in his car and asked me for directions,” Gajowa recalled, “And I couldn’t hear him, so I leaned into the window and he grabbed me. I was anorexic, couldn’t have been more than 90 pounds soaking wet, so he just pulled me inside and threw me into the backseat. I banged my head really hard on the window frame so I was woozy and I didn’t really know what was going on…”
Gajowa described a harrowing several minutes of being thrashed around by erratic turns and sudden slams on the brakes until Warren pulled into an alleyway and clambered into the backseat.
“I thought he was going to… you know,” Gajowa stated, averting her eyes, “But he didn’t, like, touch me or anything. Not like that. He just grabbed my hair and slammed my head into the center console, and I passed out.”
Over the past two years, though Gajowa initially forgot the bulk of what happened to her, memories have returned to her in fragments. She described the various ways in which Warren tortured her (which have been omitted for both her sake and the sake of our readers at home), and after about an hour and a half of describing the horror show that her life became for the duration of those two weeks, she finally got to the night of her escape.
“It was a Friday, and I know it was because he was talking about death a lot more than he already did,” Gajowa told me, her voice beginning to shake. “He kept talking about how the week is brand new after Sunday, and that he’d make me new too. Which I guess was a euphemism for, um… for killing me.
“He tied a rope around my head and put the knot in my mouth. Then I fell asleep, I think,” she continued, “Or… well, I had to have. Because I don’t remember anything except suddenly being, um… running across the street full-tilt. And thank God the first house I saw still had its lights on because otherwise I know I would have just kept running until I saw one that did. I knew— er, like, knew in my whole body that if I didn’t keep running I would die.
“And I banged on the door, and Mrs. Allan opened it. I said so much stuff… I can’t really remember everything I explained, but she basically dragged me inside and yelled for her husband. And he literally had, like— like, a gun. If…”
At this point, her eyes began to water.
“If he came looking for me,” she finally continued after breaking for 5 minutes or so, “Mr. Allan was going to shoot him. And— you know, I’m a Catholic, I don’t want anybody else to die. But I wanted him dead. I wanted him to walk through that door and die and never look at me again.
Warren has been sentenced to almost 300 years in prison— several life sentences— thanks in large part to Gajowa’s victim impact statement. When asked about her view of his imprisonment, she began to speak about Jesus and the Bible and did so for several minutes before finally answering me.
“In Ephesians, Paul says ‘forgive one another as God in Christ forgave you’, and you think you always will, and then something comes along that makes you think ‘maybe I’ll never be like God’.
“But I am,” Gajowa asserted to me, pressing her hands together on her knee, “I’m a godly woman. I forgive those who trespass against me. He wrote Ephesians, right, but before that… you know, Paul killed people. A lot of Christians, men, women, children. I don’t think it’s possible for a person to be unworthy of forgiveness no matter what they do. So, um… yeah, I forgive him. Should he ever get out of prison? No, that’s not fair to all those girls, and my God is forgiving but He’s fair, too. He’s the Righteous Judge. Miles… Mr. Warren got what was coming to him and he will for a long, long time.
“I hope,” she told me in earnest, “I really hope from the bottom of my heart that one day he walks into the chapel at North Branch and he falls on his knees and repents. God is everything good about people with none of the worldly things that make us so… so, uh, [messed] up.”
When asked about what she would tell a fellow survivor about how to cope with the enormity of something like surviving a murderer, Gajowa had this to say.
“Don’t let the bastards grind you down,” she said with a little laugh, “Um, and have… so-so-so much love and compassion and, uh… and patience for the person you had to become and the things they had to do. That’s part of you forever. And you can either make yourself miserable trying to deny that part of you for the rest of your life or learn to live with it and love it like you should love yourself.”
And everyone will say/That it all was finished years ago/But you will stay/And you won't ever let it go
