Good morning to everyone who is going to troll an oil company today đ
The goal of bullying Big Oil companies over their climate tweets isnât just to educate people about corporate hypocrisy. Itâs to unite activists around the goal of taking away their social license to operate.
Oil majors have admitted to investors that their business would be in deep trouble without broad public support. Theyâve also admitted the biggest threat to maintaining social license is public anger over climate change.
Oil companies could remedy this threat by winding down their fossil fuel operations, and investing heavily in renewable energy. But for the most part, theyâve chosen to combat public anger over climate change by investing in strategic communication. This consistent choice of empty climate words over meaningful climate action is why several Shell executives quit the company this weekâand itâs why Heglar says social media call-outs are increasingly powerful.
â from this excellent article about why greentrolling is fun but also actually very effective:Â Drag them. The climate case for calling out fossil fuel companies online
the smartest things the prison industrial complex ever did were
1) convincing American society that prisoners are all ârapists and murderersâ despite the fact that: a) most prisoners are drug offenders, b) even most violent offenders are just victims of class society and could very easily be turned into non-violent people, and c) our country seems to be run by people who are either rapists or murderers and no one seems to care.
2) using that bad reputation to not only make people apathetic to any kind of brutality or atrocity committed against prisoners who donât deserve any of it (see a and b) but using it as an excuse to increase the power the carceral state has over EVERYONE, all while smearing those who disagree as supporting rapists and murderers.
when talking about prison abolition, itâs important to note that most people, including most leftists, have internalized these ideas to a huge extent.
bruh. i think ign snapped

Margot Robbie reveals the journey âBirds of Preyâ took after she pitched it four and half years ago.
No guys, I need to stop and talk about something in this movie and how fucking revolutionary it was; something that I havenât seen in a movie before or since.
This is a movie about a kid who leaves her birth family.
Not a kid who find that they have a secret lineage or something that allows them to find their âtrue familyâ - this is a movie about a kid whose true birth family is made up of bad people. So she gets out. And that is played as the right thing to do. She isnât punished for it or made to feel bad about âabandoning her familyâ. There isnât an underlying âbut theyâre your family and you have to love themâ or âtheyâre your family and they love you even if they donât show it well or do hurtful thingsâ message of the kind that I see OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER in media. Matilda gets out and lives happily ever after because of it.
We need a million more movies like this to counter the metric shit ton of movies that directly counter this message.
#sometimes the family you start with isnât a good one #but you can find your own #family is not absolute #blood is not absolute
not to mention, Miss Honey is an abuse survivor herself (and in the book, sheâs only 23 years old)
they both got out. they both became each otherâs happy ending.
